PARKWAY V STREET - MATCH REPORT

Recommended Posts

FT: Street 0 Plymouth Parkway 3 (Carter pen 1, 6, Bentley 45+2)

Parkway travelled to Street in a rearranged fixture looking to get their campaign back on track after 2 successive defeats having failed to score in either. The journey got off to a bad start with the coach breaking down at Ivybridge with a replacement required. This delayed the arrival at the ground until 7.20 with the kick off being put back 15 minutes to 8 o’clock. Parkway made one change from their narrow defeat to Merthyr Town in the FA Cup on Saturday with Fletcher Williams coming into midfield to replace Ryan Lane. Despite the disruption to normal pre match preparations,

Parkway got off to a flying start going 2-0 up in the first 6 minutes. Straight from their kick off Street shot from the half way line in an attempt to catch keeper Kyle Moore off his guard. Moore cleared the ball deep into the host’s penalty area causing defensive confusion resulting in a handball and a penalty given on approximately 36 seconds! Top scorer Adam Carter confidently stroked the spot kick home sending Liam Norris the wrong way. With Street still recovering from the early setback. Parkway doubled their lead on 6 minutes. An excellent flowing move starting from the back and along the left with Jordan Copp, Tiegan Rosenquest and Mikey Williams all prominent saw a telling cross poorly defended with Carter reacting smartly to the loose ball and ramming home from close range.

Street gradually got their game going forcing Parkway on the defensive with Harry Gardner looking dangerous along the left making strong runs and having shots blocked on 8 and 10 minutes. Street continued to compete strongly and press in midfield denying Parkway any forward momentum and created further half chances with Kameron Andrews seeing his shot well saved on 17 minutes and the impressive Gardener having an effort blocked by Rob Farkins on 20. Street continued to break quickly with the speedy Leighton Thomas making a strong run on the right and seeing his shot fly just over on 23 minutes. Parkway continued to struggle to get their passing game going with Street closing down quickly in midfield restricting Parkway to any quality possession. Billy Palfrey saw his shot from distance go wide on 28 minutes in a sporadic Parkway attack. Street continued in the ascendancy with Parkway conceding free kicks in dangerous areas and only poor finishing and solid Parkway defending, with Nick Milton outstanding, denied the hosts a goal their approach play probably deserved. Parkway did create a break on 38 minutes with a break on the left from Rosenquest setting up Krac whose shot from distance was well saved low down by Norris. Andrews continued to provide a threat for Street seeing his run and shot from 20 yards well saved by Moore on 40 minutes.

Parkway had created little since their early goals, being restricted to a couple of long range efforts with Street battling hard and looking the more likely to score. Parkway received their first sin bin of the season on 41 minutes with Rob Farkins being despatched to the sidelines after alleged remarks made to the referee. Against the run of play Parkway got a third goal in first half stoppage time. Mikey Williams was brought down after a strong run down the right and the resultant free kick was headed back across the goal to the unmarked Aaron Bentley who nodded home from close range. A good start and end to the half from Parkway with Street having plenty of possession in between forcing Parkway to defend strongly but with Moore remaining relatively untested.

Street started the second half at a high tempo with Gardner, Andrews and Thomas all looking threatening and seeing their shots blocked. Dan Linham replaced Sam Smith for the hosts on 48 minutes with Thomas shooting into the side netting on 50 minutes. Another strong run from Thomas was halted by Milton, who received a yellow card, on 53 minutes as Street continued to force the pace. Moore then pulled off a superb save at his near post on 56 minutes as Parkway continued to come under pressure. Surprisingly Thomas was replaced by Olly Hibberd on the hour. Parkway broke forward on 62 minutes with an incisive move between Copp and Mikey Williams which ended with a cross being well defended and Norris remaining untested. On 64 minutes Parkway conceded possession in midfield with Andrews linking well with Gardner who shot wide. With play now being compressed into a well contested midfield, Krac was replaced by Antonia Costa on 65 minutes as Street continued to look the better side. Palfrey was booked for a foul on 74 minutes with Will Tinsley replacing Milton on 75 minutes as Parkway reshuffled their back four. With play now going through a scrappy phase Hibberd, who had looked lively since coming on, was booked for an unnecessary challenge. Street continued on the attack with Parkway rarely getting forward and looking to play on the break.

Curtis Damerell replaced Carter up front on 78 minutes as Parkway looked to introduce fresh legs and stretch the Street defence. Damerell forced a couple of late corners which came to nothing with the final chance of the game falling to the impressive Gardner whose powerful strike was well saved by Moore. Damerell became the final player to be yellow carded as Parkway held out to complete a workmanlike, dogged, grafting if uninspiring victory being pushed all the way by a hardworking, resolute Street side who, had their finishing matched their approach play, may well have taken something from the game. However credit to Parkway who converted their few chances and defended strongly throughout in keeping another clean sheet.

The win sees Parkway climb to 2nd place on goal difference from Bitton and ahead of Bradford Town and Brislington in 3rd and 4th  also on goal difference with all 4 on 12 points at this early stage of the season. An eventful journey for the players and the hardy band of supporters which started by departing from Plymouth at 4 pm and ended by arriving back around 1.30 am after diversions and a delay due to a road traffic accident on the return run. In another recently rearranged fixture, Parkway now play 6th placed Odd Down (Bath) at Bolitho Park this Saturday in what is expected to be another tough encounter.
