WELLS CITY V PARKWAY -MATCH REPORT

Recommended Posts

FT: Wells City 0 Plymouth Parkway 4

                                                                        (Carter pen 10, 61, J Annear 36, Williams 68)

Parkway travelled to 1st Division Wells City in the twice postponed 2nd round of the Les Phillips League Cup. Personnel, positional and formation changes were made from Saturday's narrow victory over Clevedon Town with Mike Smith, Jordan Annear, Sam Hillson and Tiegan Rosenquest in the starting line up. With Christian Pople, Billy Palfrey and Les Afful unavailable, Rob Farkins and Mikey Williams were on the bench alongside Stewart Yetton and Tom Annear. Wells got off to the sharper start with a couple of early attacks which came to nothing however it was Parkway who took the lead on 10 minutes with their first meaningful attack. A long ball into the penalty area found Adam Carter who cleverly held the ball up and linked well with Jordan Annear who was clearly tripped on the edge of the 6 yard box. Carter casually slotted him his second spot kick in successive games.

The game lacked any real quality with both sides guilty of conceding possession too easily as play became scrappy with few chances being created. Parkway were forced to make an early change on 18 minutes with debutant Tom Annear replacing the injured Jordan Trott at left back. With their player manager Nathan Truckle leading from midfield and dictating their play, Wells were competing well and on 20 minutes a mistake in the Parkway defence resulted in a cross from the right flying across the face of the goal with nobody able to apply the final touch. Smith then had Parkway's next chance on 25 minutes after being put in the clear and rounding keeper Fraser Mcdiarmid 10 yards out, a heavy touch allowed the keeper time to recover and block his effort. From the corner Aaron Bentley headed just over before Wells then broke away with Lewis Williams seeing his shot well saved by Kyle Moore.

Play continued to be fragmented with clear chances few and far between and defences generally in control and Tom Annear making a steady, solid debut from the bench. On the half hour neat Parkway approach play ended with Smith having a shot blocked before the next attack saw Krac shoot harmlessly wide on 35 minutes. With Parkway now looking the more dangerous, Jordan Annear linked well with Rosenquest only for his shot to be well saved. Annear was not to be denied however and increased the Parkway lead on 36 minutes. More good, strong hold up play by Carter in the 18 yard area saw him unselfishly pass to Annear who stabbed home from close range. Wells continued to compete strongly and looked dangerous on the counter attack with Williams again seeing an effort saved by Moore. As the half ended a fluent Parkway attack involving Carter and Krac saw the latter's shot on target saved by the feet of Mcdiarmid. An end to end, generally scrappy half with only a few glimpses of quality play with Parkway creating the better chances and defending strongly when necessary.

Wells had the first chance of the second half on 55 minutes when Dempster King turned sharply in the 18 yard box bringing a smart save from Moore. Parkway then had the chance to go further ahead on 57 minutes with Carter releasing Jordan Annear who shot narrowly wide with only the keeper to beat. The game was now opening up as Parkway applied the pressure with Carter heading just over from a free kick. Rosenquest became the first player to be booked on 58 minutes before the Parkway pressure eventually told on 61 minutes with Carter scoring a stunning goal. Receiving the ball wide on the left, a delicate first touch and clever turn to create some space saw him unleash a powerful angled drive from around 25 yards into the far, top corner. Ryan Lane who was having a very effective game in central midfield then went on a surging run from deep in his own half and picked out Jordan Annear who shot just wide. Just after the hour Mikey Williams replaced Krac with Harry Ratcliffe replacing Truckle for the hosts. Wells continued to mount the occasional attack and on 65 minutes the lively Lewis Williams cut in from the right only to fire into the side netting.

Parkway increased their lead further on 68 minutes with Mikey Williams first real involvement in the game. A mix up in the Wells defence saw the ball break to Williams on the right who showed the composure that others had not as he calmly sidestepped the keeper and nonchalantly stroked home into the unguarded net. On 70 minutes the hard working Carter who had had another impressive game was replaced by Stewart Yetton with Wells bringing on Liam Davies for King. Wells kept pushing forward and another effort required a smart save, once again with his feet, by Moore. Parkway continued to create chances with Smith, Lane both going close and Yetton linking well with Rosenquest whose cross fell to Smith who shot narrowly wide on 79 minutes. Lane then received a yellow card for an innocuous looking challenge in midfield before making another break forward with his shot being well blocked.

The games final substitution saw Harvey Burge replace Mark Randall on 80 minutes for Wells as Parkway seemed to relax and look to manage the game to it's conclusion. Wells continued to put crosses into the danger area but all were being confidently taken by Moore whose handling in the air all game had been faultless. Going into stoppage time a rash, and in the context of the game, unnecessary challenge by Bentley on Burge on the touch line right in front of the dugouts sparked a furious reaction from the home management. There then ensued an unedifying melee involving a number of staff and players from both sides. Once the dust had settled both managers were sent off and Bentley received a yellow card. The game then meandered to it's end with Parkway worthy winners showing that little bit more experience and know how than their hosts who had also played their part but lacked the vital cutting edge.

Parkway will now host another Division 1 side, highflyers Keynsham Town, in the quarter final at Bolitho Park on Wednesday 6th March. Parkway now have a 10 day break to recharge and recuperate before Cribbs are the visitors on Saturday 26 January. Your correspondent will also be taking a mid season break and will be off to sunnier climes to witness some leather on willow and will therefore miss the Cribbs, Roman Glass St George and Wellington matches. Normal service should be resumed for the Cadbury Heath game on Wednesday 6th February, drones, rum and jet lag permitting!!

Many thanks again Graham ...enjoy Barbados

I wonder if there will be complaints about there not being any match reports for those games......

Quite probably. If Graham was any sort of supporter he would have someone give him the commentary down the phone, and then type the report up from his hotel room. 😁

"Plenty of dribbling, and then a mazy run." (that was Bald One after one of the lesser quality pasties on offer).
