Bulldog Drummond shows the way.. Wadebridge o Porthleven 4.

Recommended Posts

After two dire dismal December Xmas performances, Dobwalls away losing 3-1 and Wendron away drawing 2-2, Porthleven finally shook off their Xmas hangover and finished 2018 in winning ways with a 4-0 away victory at Wadebridge.

Credit must go to both Dobwalls and Wendron for their results against the Top of the league fishermen, but the pre-match discussion in the Wadebridge clubhouse bar was still why/how did Porthleven perform so poorly in those two fixtures and fall so far below the standards which they have set this season. Was it team selection? Was it the formation used?, Was it players having a collective day(s) off ? We can all watch, discuss and make our own minds up to the possible reasons but whatever ones personal thoughts or opinions the performance at Wadebridge was 100% better and credit must go to Porthleven's managers for getting their team selection, motivational skills and their in-game management right in order to get their team refocused and ready to provide a much improved performance.

Both teams set up playinging similar formations with three at the back but it was Porthleven that made the more solid and confident start, scoring after seven minutes through Matt Drummond. Porthleven continued to look in control for around twenty minutes with their two holding midfielders, Heydon Dark and Jordan Adlard getting through a decent amount of work. However Wadebridge started to have greater energy, if not experience, in the midfield and began to get some joy running through the middle which resulted in Porthleven's managers spotting the danger and switching to a 4-3-3 (?) formation by moving Tom Annear from left centre back to bolster and plug the midfield gaps and dropping the wing backs deeper to full backs. Heydon Dark, back in the side after being left out at Wendron put in a tremendous water-carriers 90 minutes and whilst unspectacular he time and again blocked many of the Bridgers forward moves.

The basic foundation of any attacking team is how you defend....and today Porthleven defended well and as a unit working together whether as a three or later as a four. Chris Wormington, restored to the Fishermans defence and starting line-up after being on the bench at both Dobwalls and Wendron, had a typically solid reliable game, as did Josh Sims who also did not start against Wendron. There's a picture growing here somewhere.. The person next to me in the grandstand made what I thought was a very relevant and correct statement which I feel is worth repeating because I feel it's true, in that he thought Tom Annear was a very good 6 1/2 out of 10 midfielder but an excellent 8 1/2 out of 10 centre back !  Football as we all know is and will always be all about different opinions, but for me Porthleven's defence did look far stronger and more confident at Wadebridge than it had in the previous games and Wormington, Sims and Annear, were its bedrock or foundation. There's a lot of young legs and experience there, mostly early twenties, including the wing backs and later the full backs, who all tried to play what for the most part this season has been the Porthleven way, out from the back and through the thirds, retaining position through midfield to advance higher up the pitch with the ball before looking for the killer balls across and into the box.. Rarely any hump it and lump it over the midfielders heads here.

Another big plus for Porthleven was the return to scoring form of striker Matt Drummond. Barking orders Drummonds bulldog spirit was infectious,  and when he felt the team needed to give more he was not slow to verbally let his team mates know it. Two goals and a superb display of how to drag defenders away from the middle of the box to create space, before getting back in there to take advantage of any space or opportunities made for himself. One run for the defender, the other for me...excellent. Equally as important was, and is, his ability to hold the ball up and buy time to bring his team mates up the pitch and into the game. Again excellent..Drummonds game was made to look even better by some quality crosses first from Rob Carey for the first goal and secondly by Dan McGee for his second, both six yard box finishes, one side foot volley the other a header.

With the score 1-0 at half time It took unti the 61st minute for the second goal to arrive. A driven dead ball line cross by the hard working Rob Carey was turned into his own goal by unlucky centre back Ben Williams. Had the defender not tried to intercept the ball the predatory Drummond was behind him and ready to tap in....

With  perhaps fifteen minutes to go Porthleven's Jordan Adlard was replaced by George Molcher and Molchers energy and forward thinking changed the dynamics of the game again. At 2-0 down Wadebridge were stubborn, still creating openings and never quite out of the game, but a beautiful one two with Tornado Bello high up alongside the far touch line of the Gonvena Hill end, saw Molcher receive the instant 1-2 return pass. His early give and go movement followed by a drive infield across to the corner of the penalty area saw him fire home a superbly driven low shot which gave  Wadebridge keeper Rob Rosvear no chance. Porthleven finally had earned and been rewarded with the breathing space their play had deserved. 3-0.

Drummond pulled off his marker to head Ports fourth a few minutes later. The final score, 4-0, did not flatter Porthleven who had plenty of chances,  but equally  Wadebridge were never out of a game whose scoreline perhaps suggests a more one sided match.

Man of the match for Wadebridge would probably be between a much slimmer, fitter looking than the last time I saw him, Ben Williams and Ben O'Connor in midfield both having positive influences on the players around them.  For Porthleven's Man of the match I would go with Matt Drummond for his solid team effort plus two goals, but he was run close by Heydon Dark who put in a terrific shift and today looked after the ball well, covering his defence and supporting the attack, as well as hitting the bar with an out of the box shot and going close with a diving header from ten yards out in the closing stages.

The  young referee, Scott McKenzie had no  "flowers in his hair " but plenty of players in his ear !!!!   He is a very young referee and did seem to struggle a little from time to time. There were a rash of yellow cards for what appeared very minor fouls, but he's the referee so get on with it. Everyone has to learn somewhere and I feel that for a young referee he done ok, and with more games under his belt he will be ok. Good luck to him in the new year.

Finally and a bit corny but congratulations to Wadebridge Town FC on producing a superb match day programme! So many programmes tell you little or nothing but the Bridgers had a good factual content and was an interesting read. The compilers notes served to remind everyone and indicate just how good a season Porthleven are having this year. In the past ten seasons the highest position Porthleven have ever finished is SIXTH !! (3 times) Well done Mr Carey and Mr Richards on putting together a good group of players and well done the players on a very good and, for the most part, very enjoyable first half of the season. Now for the 2019 half.

Next Saturday Porthleven are away at Vogue Park where they will play St Day in the Senior Cup.

Happy new year one and all.

If the plans are still the same as I was shown when there a few seasons ago, then it will be very impressive if it gets the go ahead.

just hope these plans actually go ahead... heard all this down at Falmouth about this brand new pitch and nothing materialised. Got the 4G - which is a tidy little outfit, but not the new ground for Falmouth?

Drummond has been a good Striker over the decades, had a very brief stint at Bodmin a few seasons ago but never really worked out for him. Porthleven are a traditional old club with a cracking pitch, & by the signings they have made they are certainly going for the West Division title at All Costs .
