I echo Prynner comment I checked the pitch at 10 o’clock and was wet but playable but as the pitch was half way through being rolled a really heavy downpour resulted in a good inch of water laying across the pitch with no where to go in an already sodden ground. Tried our best to get it on

Unfortunately rolling a pitch only serves to compact it and it's the compaction that causes the water retention.
If you ever see the professional groundsmen cutting the pitch in the background of a T.V. shot, they are using walk behind mowers, as they won't even use ride ons because of compaction.
The head groundsman at Argyle some years ago won awards for the grounds condition, and Harpers Park was named after him.
His mantra was that rollers did more damage than good.

Horses  for courses I guess as you can't compare a premiership pitch(which are mostly sand based) to a pitch in a park which is shared with the cricket & open to the general public to use.If we didn't use a roller all be it a fairly small one the pitch would be rough as guts so we roll it then go over it with a spiker to open the ground back up to aid drainage so you can only do what you can do !!

Maybe a point is being missed here, there was no comparison with premier league grounds intended, just passing on the advice of a professional groundsman who won recognition for his work from his peers.
Professional advice from someone with his ability, paid or unpaid, is usually worth listening to.

Apologies to St Teath for the late cancellation as I understand some of there players were on route & nearly at St Stephen, pitch was fine mid/late morning but a real heavy spell of rain around 12-30 wrecked all hope of getting the game on 😡

If opposition were nearly at the ground should you not have waited for the match official to decide, quite possible the game could have been oplayed!
