Now this is a Football team. Forget today's 'pre-madonnas' these guys were great players. The standard then to what it is now is laughable. Chris Slateford, Phil Ryder, these guys would of played in the current league set up with their eyes closed, such graceful footballer's.

Absolutely, there is no comparison in the skills, today it is all kick and rush and hope! Anyone remember the brilliant Pollards playing for Newquay, today’s players would never live with them! CornishMaid
I agree with 100%Cornish. The picture of the 1982 Newquay team in the Newquay Voice this week evoked many happy memories, but also some sadness when remembering that seven people in the photo are no longer with us. It was not only a good team, but a team who were great friends on and off the pitch, and a feeling of great fellowship prevailed throughout the club. Newquay South-Western League Champions. Leading South-Western League Goal Scorers: First: Chris Slateford 32 Goals Third: Phil Ryder 26 Goals The Team: South-Western League Team 1982, (people in photograph) Back Row: Richard Norrish (Chairman) Tony Kendall (First Aid, later Chairman, and then President) Ray Nichols Phil Ryder David Philp Tony Webb Larry Grigg Michael Tummon Peter Pearson Trevor Mewton (Manager) Front Row: Paul Beason Chris Thomas Chris Morris Dave Streat Colin Chegwyn Chris Slateford Brian Philp Mascot: Dave Wilton

We Two
Tiny Rowe, the Wherry twins, Owen Warrick, Morley Ball, Jackie Miners ( hair net and all ) Johnny Boyce, George Fisher, are a few that all played for St Austell over the years, as we believe did the Pollards for a short time. Those of a certain age will also remember Roy Nail from Newquay, Basil Steer from Tavistock, Noah Lobb and George Rundle from St Blazey, really competitive and talented players who could dish out the tackles and accept retribution without complaint. The man in the middle that deserves a mention when recalling the leather case balls and the men of that era, is Leslie Pearce, one of the best cornish referees to not have tested his skill at a higher level. Les always kept control of the game, and now spends his time in his butchers shop in St Austell and churning out Pearces Pasties.

Morley Ball (father of David) and the Pollard twins all played for both Newquay and St Austell. Basil Steer also played for Truro and was a very good golf player as well. Owen Warrick was one of the best 'up and coming' keepers of the 1950s, being the same age as Rex Manhire of Falmouth and David Thomas of Penzance (later of Falmouth). Les Pearce I believe retired from refereeing in 1993/94. Bill Pearce is probably the best known Cornish referee from the era (1955-1973). Another referee who had his own style was Reverend Ken Trunks.
Rayvon
Went to Penwethers school with Dave Streat Phil Ryder and Chrissy Thomas, what a trio all very talented footballers and all good enough to have turned professional. Unfortunately Phil is no longer with us Chris is in a care home, Streater is still with us but is not cutting hair any longer. Has to be one of the greatest Cornish league teams ever imo.
