Foxhole 4 (Reed-Bennett 27, 46, Griffin 44, Reed 49) Veryan 1(Rowe 65)

A fairly even start with Rowe and Barnacle particularly impressing. A position swap between Reed-Bennett and Griffin proved decisive, Foxhole soon going ahead with a brave header before three goals in quick succession either side of half-time sealed the points. Veryan deserved their consolation but the Foxes were never in danger of throwing it away and should have rattled in a few more. Good luck to Veryan, and many thanks to Bob Steggles, Ian Osborne and the various visiting linesmen.

Foxhole (4-3-3): Matt Bullen; Ryan Wilkins, Nathan Papaioannou, Lee Whetter, Huw Morgan; Paul Reed, Lee Reed-Bennett, Levi Kerrigan, Rory Barnacle; Martin Gilbert, Richard Griffin. Subs: Jowan Dingle, Bradley Allen.

I was there watching and thought Gorran put up a good fight against a side 2 division above. I would also question the 4th goal that went to Kibell. For me it was a huge deflection so would put it down as an own goal

Well done again to the mighty Foxes, who had to work hard against a resilient visiting outfit which was always in the game and for whom their keeper excelled in racing off his line to thwart countless one-on-ones. However, the result was just, as Matt in the home goal was rarely extended, and the sight of such a strong bench offered much reassurance. Many thanks to Jo Harris, Ian Osborne and Gary Sleep.

St Mawgan 2 (Jayne 9, Morrison 44) Foxhole 3 (Griffin 31, 118, Bould pen 53) aet (Junior Cup)

Facing the slope and the gale Foxhole started well but went behind against the run of play when Craig Allen set up Jayne for an easy finish. A switch to a five-man midfield soon brought its rewards when Griffin expertly volleyed home Bradley Allen's fine cross but the hosts regained the lead when Morrison headed in a deep free-kick following a spell of pressure when Lake was twice tested from distance.

The Foxes levelled soon after the restart when a defender inexplicably handled Griffin's cross for Bould to make no mistake from the spot. However, despite enjoying almost total possession, the visitors failed to test Jordan Cole for the remainder of normal time and the first half of extra-time. St Mawgan looked to be favourites to progress with the elements in their favour, and  Lake again proved a very able deputy for the unavailable Bullen before, at the death, Griffin managed to out-fox the excellent Prentice to bag the winner.

Well played lads and hard luck St Mawgan. Many thanks to the officials Paul Buscombe, Ian Osborne and Andy Ball.

rose tinted glasses by any chance Darin?? I do however think you are spot on with your thanks to Paul Buscombe. 2 massive decisions that 9 times out of 10, St Mawgan get awarded  free kicks and 2 Foxhole goals don't happen

Was a fairly even contest in terms of territory, with both teams having the upper hand with the elements in their favour ,but St Mawgan were much more of a threat and the foxhole keeper was by far the buisiest..

Take it and run though, good luck in the semi's and hopefully you keep the cup in the east.

St Mawgan 3 (Maull 14, Allen 17, Olsen 60) Foxhole 1 (Reed-Bennett 35)

It had been an emotionally draining week. On Monday my uncle died of the big C. He was walking past Curry's when the sign fell on him. Then, on Wednesday, I invited the pop group Abba around for tea. And if I had to do the same again, I would my friend. For Nando's. St Mawgan's pitch is in close proximity to the ocean so to clear my head I pondered the merits of exploring the area prior to the game, but as I'd heard part of Mawgan Porth beach had been set aside for naturists I had to plan carefully the bits I wanted to see.

Today's a Brand New Day and I'd intended to set off early but I was delayed by a knock on the door. A man with Singing Detective complexion and who seemed to be wearing somebody else's teeth said he was collecting for a new swimming pool for the village. I told him it was Precious Time and gave him a bucket of water just to get rid of him. Consequently it was not until exactly 12.59pm when I left home, which is normally when I arrange to meet my girlfriend as I love one-to-one time.

As the sun was out I passed many people Choppin' Wood and Cleaning Windows but my journey to the match was soon to take a surreal turn. My dear old mum always told me "Don't Look Back" but I glanced in my rear-view mirror and saw van Morrison of all people in the vehicle behind! What, I wondered, was the legendary Irish singer doing outside St Columb on a Cornish winter's day? In my nervous excitement I slowed to a crawl and he beeped his horn impatiently so I pulled over to The Bright Side of the Road to let him pass. It was then that I realised my mistake - it wasn't van Morrison at all, but a Morrison's van. At least it gave me a chance to reminisce about the great man's vast discography.

Cursing my stupidity in only bringing one glove (the forecast said it'd be cold but, on the other hand, it'd be sunny) I needed to warm up so I found a cafe by the beach and got talking to a chap in the doorway who appeared to have purchased all the clothes he'd ever need in about 1968. This Dweller on the Threshhold explained that, after having had toothache all week, he'd just been to the dentist to have it out.
"Does it still hurt?" I asked.
"I don't know", he replied. "The dentist kept the tooth."
Soon the man was staring at me intently. "If it wasn't for the beard," he said, "you'd be a dead ringer for my wife".
"I haven't got a beard", I protested.
"No, but my wife has", he said.

The Avalon Sunset we'd been treated to earlier soon disappeared but thankfully there was no repeat of last week's Full Force Gale or even a Cold Wind in August. However, the appearance of dark clouds were an ominous sign even before Maull opened the scoring on 14, and the lead was doubled three minutes later when Allen plundered a goal from nothing to leave the Foxhole defence asking just Who Was That Masked Man? The Versatile Morrison, no relation to the esteemed Belfast Cowboy, expertly marshalled an impressive home rearguard in which Prentice again excelled so when Reed-Bennett reduced the arrears on 35 ramming home from close range after Dingle's fine cross had been headed onto the post by Bould it was a Beautiful Vision that induced A Sense of Wonder amongst the travelling faithful.

Unfortunately the visitors' hopes were dashed on the hour when Olsen smashed in the third from close range following a corner and, with the mist descending to reduce visibility to just a few yards, there was little to suggest a comeback. Frustratingly the Foxes did not seem to be on the same Wavelength and there was evidently No Plan B or an ability to Keep It Simple. Whetter, absent from the defence since the very early stages of last week, has been Too Long in Exile. Without him there was No Guru, No Method, No Teacher and the team appears to be currently in A Period of Transition. St Mawgan thoroughly deserved the victory and only goal difference prevented them from going Back On Top.

Such was the disappointment on Days Like This I just felt I Wanna Go Home. I intended to Hardnose the Highway but got stuck behind a tractor so I became the Queen of the Slipstream for several miles as we passed the Rolling Hills and Redwood Trees of Indian Queens until, with the traffic lights Bein' Green, I was eventually able to overtake him. Still It's All in the Game and, next week (Veryan away) I Will Be There and we will Start All Over Again. Meantime, When That Evening Sun Goes Down I'm off Down the Road for a Wild Night and some Warm Love in Foxhole.

Foxhole (4-5-1): Matt Bullen; Nathan Papaioannou, Chris Brown, Huw Morgan, Ryan Wilkins; Bradley Allen, Martin Gilbert, Lee Reed-Bennett, Nathan Allen, Levi Kerrigan; Benno Bould. Subs: Jowan Dingle, Rory Barnacle, Shane Kibell.

The expected chasm in class between the teams failed to materialise and Foxhole will feel unfortunate not to share the spoils after more than matching the Kernow team, and creating much the better chances in the first half. Somehow finding themselves three down early in the second half, Lee Whetter's side almost completed a famous comeback. Many thanks to those who were honorary Foxes for the night. Good luck to Kernow. Many thanks to the officials Jo Harris, Graham Allen and Dean Kitley.

Veryan 2 (Johns 29, Bullen 54) Foxhole 4 (Reed-Bennett 9, Bould 37, 39, Griffin 47)

It had been an eventful week. My cousin, feeling at a really low ebb as he was months behind on his mortgage payments, had threatened to drive off a cliff. Luckily some nearby members of the public had a whip round to pay off all his debts. Mind you, they were the passengers on his bus. Then, on Thursday, I suffered an asthma attack. I was mugged by two men who had asthma. I really should have heard them hiding.

It has become a ritual for me when driving to away games to listen to our local BBC radio station and to marvel at the sheer professionalism of its slick presenters. So, as I eagerly tuned to Radio Cornwall, I imagined passing the time along the lanes of the Roseland peninsula by singing along to some classic tunes - you can guess my dismay, therefore, when the playlist for this particular Saturday appeared to be drawn entirely from a CD compilation entitled "Songs You Hoped You'd Never Hear Again."

Arriving at the Sports Ground in good time, I decided to have a look around. I soon chanced upon an elderly couple whose dress sense suggested the village possessed the world's last surviving branch of John Collier, but they were pleasant enough, happily engaging me in nostalgic conversation. I asked the man if he had lived in Veryan all his life.

"Not yet", he replied, before embarking on a rant about the cost of Werther's Originals.

Strolling through the village, it was evident that the place had a quaint Olde Worlde charm. It appeared to have the world's largest range of Morris Minors per capita and I passed a garage sale where a small group of men were eagerly searching through a pile of Betamax video tapes resting on a trestle table until, on hearing an aeroplane, they all stopped and pointed to the sky.

Foxhole opened the scoring thanks to a magnificent 25-yard screamer from Reed-Bennett but, after the impressive Cheshire had been brought down just outside the box by Bullen, Johns equalised with a firmly struck free-kick. At that stage it was anybody's game until a switch to 4-3-3 led to the Foxes taking charge thanks to a couple of fine finishes from Bould. Griffin scored a fourth immediately on the restart with a clever lob over the advancing Holland but, despite creating numerous opportunities, the visitors were unable to add to their tally. A defensive mishap allowed Sam Bullen to notch a second for the home team but, with Kerrigan and Nathan Allen superb, the points were safely secured.

Foxhole (4-4-2): Matt Bullen; Nathan Papaioannou, Chris Brown, Huw Morgan, Ryan Wilkins; Bradley Allen, Lee Reed-Bennett, Levi Kerrigan, Nathan Allen; Richard Griffin, Benno Bould. Subs: Martin Gilbert, Jowan Dingle, Lee Whetter.

Foxhole 9 (Griffin 20, 41, 79, Kenny 31, Reed-Bennett 42, 51, 59, 76, Carhart 90) St Newlyn East 0

I got a new job this week. I'm now travelling around to all the local parks collecting any jumpers left behind. It's much  trickier than it sounds as they keep moving the goalposts. I need computer access for the work so you can imagine my dismay when I discovered earlier today that my PC wasn't working properly. The chap manning the helpline was really helpful though.
"Have you tried disabling cookies?" he asked me.
"Well I once bit the legs off a gingerbread man", I replied. Then he said I'd need a new password eight characters long,  so I picked Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.

Just as I put the phone down, I happened to glance out of the kitchen window and was stunned to see a strange man walk furtively towards the top of my garden carrying a massive screwdriver. Incredulous, I watched him unscrew the gate at the end of the path, tuck it under his arm and then walk back down again. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, but I didn't like to say anything in case he took offence. All this put me in a panic that I may miss the kick off. I could have done without the stress to be honest as it's exactly ten years since the death of my father. Actually I wasn't particularly close to him when he died, which is just as well because he trod on a landmine.

I needn't have worried as I arrived in time to see a fantastic display from the super Foxes. Griffin opened the scoring with a fine header to convert Bradley Allen's centre before the impressive Kenny, in for the unavailable Bould, doubled the lead with a stunning strike from 25 yards. Griffin made it 3-0 cleverly slotting past the onrushing keeper before, within seconds, Reed-Bennett converted the first of his four successive goals from an acute angle.

The Foxhole skipper's strong running was a constant threat to an over-worked Newlyn rearguard and, after being fouled outside the box, Reed-Bennett floated home a brilliant free-kick. Just before the hour he completed a magnificent hat-trick by latching on to Gilbert's astute assist, and then he outjumped taller defenders to nod home from close-range following superb work from the effervescent Griffin.  A switch to 4-3-3 to accommodate the attacking Foxhole substitutes left sufficient unoccupied space in midfield for Newlyn to create a couple of chances which were competently dealt with by the hitherto under-employed Bullen, but it also ensured that the home team would continue their rampage and they looked capable of scoring every time they ventured into the visitors' half. Griffin's excellent anticipation saw him arrive first to blast in the rebound for his hat-trick after Brown's right-footed thunderbolt had struck a post, before Carhart marked his debut with a header from the seemingly unstoppable Reed-Bennett's inswinging corner.

Sorry for the shortened report this week but I'm off to see the Pretenders in concert down Foxhole club. Really hope it's not a tribute act.

Many thanks to stand-in referee Ian Osborne, and to Aydan Rundle and the Newlyn lino.

Foxhole 9 (Bould 2, 34, 44, Reed-Bennett 13, 27, Gilbert 23, 46, Barnacle 87, Aiden Dingle 90) Boscastle 1 (Shaw 78)

It's been another upsetting week. My cousin drowned after falling into a huge vat of whisky. The coroner said he'd have died a lot sooner if he hadn't kept climbing out to go to the toilet. I haven't been well all week either and I've practically lived on the toilet. With no sign of an end to my discomfort, I eventually made an appointment with my doctor on Thursday, and soon got chatting to a bloke in the waiting room who had a carrot stuck up his nose and a banana in his left ear. Apparently he hadn't been eating properly.

My doctor diagnosed me with a particularly virulent strain of diarrhoea, "one of the worst I've ever seen", he said, which made me feel rather proud. He prescribed some bright orange tablets, saying I had to take one every day for the rest of my life, which worries me as there were only eight in the packet. He told me not to worry if I started walking like a crab, as this was only a side effect, before he really scared me by asking if I was an organ donor. I said I'd once given an old piano to the Salvation Army; shortly afterwards I had to rush out to make urgent use of the surgery's washroom facilities.

It wasn't going to prevent me braving the gale, though, and it was worth the effort as, despite playing into the elements, Foxhole were six up by half time against depleted opponents. Bould opened the scoring from close range after 75 seconds following good work from Barnacle and Gilbert, before Barnacle again displayed his undoubted creative ability to release Reed-Bennett to fire past line-bound stand-in keeper Shaw. Gilbert made it 3-0 turning home Bould's mis-hit shot at the far post before Reed-Bennett struck a beauty from twenty-five yards. There was still time for Bould to complete his hat-trick prior to the break, first by rounding Shaw to tap in and then by converting another Gilbert assist.

Within 40 seconds of the restart Gilbert had doubled his tally, capitalising on more generous defending. However Foxhole rather let Boscastle off the hook with some sloppiness which may be decisive if repeated in the upcoming crucial games, and allowed Shaw, by now in his favoured midfield role, to notch a consolation following a fumble by Lake. Jolted into action, the Foxes managed to find the net twice more at the death, Barnacle running through to slot past the advancing replacement keeper and then Aiden Dingle bundling in from three yards after older brother Jowan had pulled back a deep corner from the excellent Papaioannou.

At last feeling able to keep some food down, I decided to try a new chip shop in St Austell for tea. My fragile mood after such an unsettling week was further aggravated, though, by the purchase of arguably the world's smallest ever portion of cod and chips.
"Do your fish get any bigger?" I asked the greasy youth clumsily wrapping my meal in a copy of the Daily Star.
"No", he lisped through yellowing teeth. "They're all dead".

Well played the super Foxes and best of luck to Boscastle for the remainder of the season. Many thanks to Bob Steggles, Gary Sleep and Ian Osborne.

Foxhole 3 (Reed-Bennett 11, Bould 13, Griffin 80 ) North Petherwin 1 (Elvidge 23)

Fortunately the diarrhoea I had developed last week had eased, only to be replaced by a need to noisily break wind with alarming alacrity and foul smells so on Wednesday I nipped into town for some medicine. On arrival my attention was drawn to a large group of pensioners gingerly getting out of a minibus. As they gathered on the pavement, I heard two of them loudly argue about whether they were mistakenly wearing each other's teeth, before the whole group shoved roughly past, causing me to drop my phone. Normally I wouldn't have thought twice about pushing one of them into the path of speeding traffic in retribution, but today I didn't make a fuss, merely smiling wryly to myself, as I knew they would all be dead soon anyway.

I quickly realised I had become an unwitting gatecrasher to a retirement home's excursion to the chemist's but I felt I had no choice other than to follow them in. This proved to be a huge mistake as, by now, most of them were already queuing at the only till operating to collect their prescriptions. With the line hardly moving, I tried a tactical retreat, only to discover I was hemmed in by the rest of the pensioners and, having been encircled in the tiny shop by toothless senior citizens in a rapid pincer movement, I had no choice but to hold my defensive position. It was like the Battle of Rorke's Drift in there, I can tell you.

After a while, and no nearer the counter, a fierce looking German Shepherd edged forward and stood next to me. Assuming it was a guide dog for the short sighted chap directly behind me (and whose asthmatic breath I could feel on the back of my neck), I politely asked him if his dog bit. In wheezy tones, he assured me that it didn't, so I patted the Alsatian on the head. In a flash, it had three of my fingers in its jaws, only releasing its grip when I stood on its tail as I hopped about in agony. This seemed to aggravate it further, and it crashed into a nearby shelf sending boxes of vitamin tablets crashing to the floor. I turned and glared at the man behind, deliberately dripping blood onto his newly polished brogues.
"I thought you said your dog didn't bite!" I exclaimed.
"That's not my dog", he said, sucking on a Werther's Original.

The pain in my hand subsided barely quicker than the queue, so I had gained little ground ten minutes later when I felt the first warning signs of a massive build up of gas inside me. While passing the wind would undoubtedly have aided my bid for freedom, I first sought revenge on the Alsatian, still eyeing me with contempt by my feet. I released a little gas, startling the elderly couple in front of me who had been discussing the price of Steradent. A voice from way behind me (somewhere near the talcum powder I think) cried out "Rover! Rover!" which made the dog bark excitedly. Pleased at my ingenuity at transferring the blame for the vile odour onto the dog, I passed more wind. Again the anguished cry: "Rover! Rover!" That'll teach you, you ugly mutt, I thought, before loudly breaking wind a third time. "Rover! Rover!" shrieked the voice. "Come here now before that man poos on you".

With Foxhole two up inside a quarter of an hour, first from Reed-Bennett's fine header from Kenny's cross and then a cool finish from Bould after he'd stolen the ball from a hesitant defender, it appeared as this would be another routine victory, particularly as numerous other early chances were created and squandered. However North Petherwin soon detected the Foxes were not quite at their best and hit back with some determined challenges and quick breaks. After deservedly reducing the arrears midway through the half, the visitors were unlucky to see a potential headed equaliser ruled out, and also lacked a killer finish on two other occasions.

It was still anybody's game until ten minutes from time when Griffin's brilliant low drive from Reed-Bennett's flick settled the nerves. Until then Foxhole were unable to further break down a resilient and combative north Cornwall outfit who continued to threaten after winning far too many of the midfield skirmishes, albeit without ever forcing Bullen to save the day.

Good luck to our visitors for the remainder of the season. Many thanks to Adrian Philp and the Petherwin linos.

Foxhole 1 (Griffin 66) Illogan 0 (Junior Cup semi final)
Wednesday 27th March 2019

I've missed our regular outings to Penryn so I was delighted it was selected as the venue for the semi-final. For purposes of research, I had borrowed a library book on the history of the town, and reached for it as soon as I parked outside the clubhouse. Evidently the ground, Kernick Road, had been named after a renowned ex-centre forward, one Archibald Road, who apparently was still turning out for the town's second team in his seventies. This intrigued me, until I re-checked the book and discovered he was actually still playing in THE seventies. Next door is the picturesque cricket ground of St Gluvias, to whom I searched the book's index for a reference, without success. Given the surfeit of empty crisp packets blowing around, I wondered if perhaps St Gluvias was the patron saint of litter.

With time to kill before kick off, I headed into town on foot in brilliant sunshine. However, all around me were grey and dreary dwellings and, as I approached the town centre, I pondered how Penryn appeared to be in the shadow of its more illustrious neighbour, a sort of Khloe to Falmouth's Kim Kardashian. I thought how Penryn would be an ideal destination should I ever want to lead an anonymous existence, as I half expected to bump into Jimmy Hoffa around the next corner, and when a biplane flew overhead I pondered whether it was being piloted by Amelia Earhart.

Lost in thought, I failed to spot two smartly dressed men approach me, carrying some leaflets. One was grinning inanely, while the other's short legs were so out of proportion to the rest of his body to suggest he may soon be the subject of a documentary on Channel Five. The smiley one enquired whether I preferred white or brown bread. Unsure if it was a trick question, I hesitated before mumbling I only ate white. This provoked the oddly-shaped chap into a fierce tirade, proclaiming eternal damnation on all who ate white bread, while the Lord would surely bless those who ate brown bread. Startled, I asked him who they were.
"We are the Hovis Witnesses", they said.

Griffin's 66th minute volley earned a deserved victory, the Foxhole legend racing onto Whetter's firm header to smash the ball past an exposed Carter from ten yards. In a match of few clear-cut chances, the Foxes were always the more dangerous but found their opponents a tough nut to crack. Rather like North Petherwin at the weekend, Illogan were quick to settle into a strong defensive formation whenever they lost the ball, denying the sort of space Griffin and Bould typically like to run into, and possessed in Matt Callaway and Simon Ellis a pair of particularly imposing figures. That said, Carter impressed with some fine saves while Bullen was a virtual spectator, his clean sheet never really in doubt as any threat was comfortably dealt with by the excellent Whetter-Morgan axis. Arguably the key man, however, was Nathan Allen, who enjoyed perhaps his finest ever performance in a white shirt: resolute, defiant, combative, yet deft of touch with an uncanny ability to always be where the action was.

Foxhole (4-3-3): Matt Bullen; Nathan Papaioannou, Chris Brown, Lee Whetter, Huw Morgan; Lee Reed-Bennett, Rory Barnicle, Nathan Allen; Richard Griffin, Benno Bould, Callum Kenny. Subs: Bradley Allen, Martin Gilbert, Aidan Dingle. Unused: Ryan Wilkins, Jowan Dingle.

Foxhole 3 (Gilbert 22, Bradley Allen 40, Bould 90) Torpoint 1 (White 18)
Saturday 30th March 2019

Feelings of euphoria follwing the Junior Cup success were somewhat tempered by the sad loss of yet another family member this week. My cousin, who had convictions for receiving stolen goods, ironically died after falling off the back of a lorry. However, the continuing brilliant sunshine blazing down on Goverseth rec lightened my mood a little. In preparation for the match I searched in the wardrobe for my shades, but instead happened upon an unopened present from the Christmas before last, which I eagerly unwrapped. May I declare here and now, dear reader, that my conscience is clear - mum should have said she was giving me a puppy.

Popping down the road before kick off to buy a paper I was amazed to spot a youth in shorts and an athlete's vest carrying a long fibreglass rod. As he reached me I asked him, "Are you a pole vaulter?"
"No", he replied, "I'm German. How did you know my name was Volter?" Just then a low-flying hot air balloon flew over me and a voice screamed down, "Do you know where I am?"
"You can't fool me," I hollered back. "You're up there in that basket."

Foxhole retained top spot after a thrilling victory but the outcome, in doubt until the final seconds, should have been settled much earlier with greater composure in front of goal during the second half. Bould and the elder Allen were particularly profligate, but it's difficult to criticise them as they both worked hard against, and regularly had the beating of, tough defenders, and each did find the net with cool finishes. Kenny looked much happier and more dangerous in a central striking role (covering for Griffin, fit only for a late cameo appearance) until he was forced off, which at least allowed for a welcome return to the first team of the excellent Andrews. Wilkins, in for Morgan, was similarly impressive; the whole back four, in fact, were again outstanding, affording Bullen another comfortable afternoon.

However, there was nothing they could do to prevent a fantastic effort from right-back White as Torpoint, aided by a breeze apparently absent from much of the rest of the county, started on the front foot. Gilbert, though, soon equalised, latching on to Kenny's assist to fire past Westall at the near post, before Allen slotted home, again from a tight angle and again from Kenny's pass. The Foxes created numerous golden chances after the break, constantly piercing the visitors' high line, but were unable to grab a killer third until Bould ran clear to find the top corner with a delicate chip.

Foxhole (4-4-2): Matt Bullen; Nathan Papaioannou, Chris Brown, Lee Whetter, Ryan Wilkins; Bradley Allen, Martin Gilbert, Lee Reed-Bennett, Nathan Allen; Callum Kenny, Benno Bould. Subs: Richard Griffin, Josh Andrews, Rory Barnacle.

Saturday 6th April 2019
Godolphin 1 (Colquhoun 82) Foxhole 3 (Bould 30, 38 Brown 59)

Godolphin looked capable of denting the Foxes' title aspirations early on with some decent possession but their toothlessness in attack meant they were unable to capitalise on the slope. Reed-Bennett's early injury gave Brown the opportunity to push forward and the visitors were almost instantly ahead when the home keeper failed to deal with Gilbert's up and under, allowing the alert Bould to finish cleverly. The G's propensity to play out from the back always looked like an accident waiting to happen and sure enough Brown soon swooped on a stumble to unselfishly square for Bould to double the lead. The second half was far more one-sided, but their hitherto clinical finishing deserted Foxhole, who squandered numerous chances. On another occasion Colquhoun's brilliant lob with eight minutes left may have precipitated some nerves amidst a late onslaught, but fortunately not today.

Foxhole (4-3-3): Aydan Rundle; Bradley Allen, Chris Brown, Lee Whetter, Ryan Wilkins; Nathan Allen, Levi Kerrigan, Rory Barnacle; Lee Reed-Bennett, Benno Bould, Martin Gilbert. Subs: Nathan Papaioannou, Huw Morgan.

Saturday 13th April

Foxhole 3 (Griffin 34, 86 Bould 64) St Mawgan 1 (Allen 40)

It's advantage Foxhole after this deserved victory at blowy Goverseth but we still need seven points from three tough away games to make absolutely sure of the title. Griffin again proved the difference, the irrepressible Foxes legend cleverly outwitting and outmuscling Prentice to open the scoring with a sublime chip over Cole before settling the encounter late on with his right foot at the second attempt. Griffin's first sparked St Mawgan into their only dominant spell as Price forced Lake into action before the same player struck the bar with a header, before Allen swivelled to equalise from close range following an inswinging corner.

The visitors were forced onto the back foot throughout the second half and it was no surprise when Bould restored the home lead when his fiercely struck daisy cutter free-kick found the net. With Whetter and Morgan able to subdue the dangerous Allen, St Mawgan rarely looked capable of scoring but it was nevertheless a relief when Griffin thumped home the third. Lostwithiel 2 (Phillips 62, Facey 74) Foxhole 5 (Bould 1, 8, 59, Griffin 34, 55)
Saturday 20th April 2019

The morning had not gone well. First, I discovered I had been the victim of a scam. I had recently taken out a subscription to a new magazine called "Your Dog" and was really excited about receiving my first issue. However, when it arrived through the post today I found it was full of photos of random pooches but there was absolutely nothing about my darling Fido. Then my girlfriend told me that the car wouldn't start as there was water in the carburettor.
"How do you know that's the problem?" I asked her. "I didn't realise you knew about such things?"
"Because I've just crashed into the river", she said.
I couldn't be mad at her. As soon as I met her, I knew she was a keeper. She was wearing massive gloves.

At least I could still get to the match by train; however, the journey east was painfully slow, although it didn't take quite as long as I feared after hearing an announcement over the loadspeaker. It said that due to signal work at Par there would be delays till June. I think it was just scaremongering, though, as we got through it in about ten minutes. Apparently this route was originally meant to be part of the HS2 high speed upgrade until the government realised nobody would ever want to get to Lostwithiel in a hurry.

Eventually I heard the tannoy announce that when we arrived it would be 1153. On glancing out of the window as we approached Lostwithiel station and being taken aback at the quaintness of the surroundings I thought that had been a bit harsh. It was more like 1968. The town appeared so reminiscent of the set of the classic film The Land that Time Forgot I thought I may later spot Doug McClure tussling with a man-eating dinosaur near a U-boat moored off the banks of the river Fowey. I really shouldn't have been surprised - only last week the Radio Times revealed the BBC are to film the new series of Life on Mars in Lostwithiel, as they reckon they'll save a fortune on location costs.

Fumbling for my platform ticket, I was suddenly unsure of the details of my return journey, so I rushed back to the station and asked the porter for the times of the trains to St Austell.
"Why don't you look online?", he said.
"That's a bit dangerous, isn't it?", I replied incredulously. Then I noticed that somebody had left a piano outside the lost property office. I had a little tinkle on it, which saved me twenty pence.

I had long planned to tie in the game with a visit to Restormel castle but unfortunately it was closed for dinner when I got there. I opted to wait for it to re-open and got talking to an odd looking couple ahead of me in the queue. He was bald and in his eighties; she was about 25, heavily pregnant and wearing a diamond necklace which dazzled in the April sunshine against his smooth head. He explained in asthmatic tones how they were half way through a punishing monument-visiting honeymoon. Clearly something of an expert in the genre, he told me while showering me with remnants of his breakfast that the castle was Lostwithiel's oldest erection, although his wife's gold-sequinned maternity dress suggested he himself may hold that particular distinction. Unsettled by her constant nibbling on his ear, I was relieved when a guide in Fred Scuttle cap and glasses at last opened the gates.

Eager for knowledge, I toyed with the idea of buying the official tour brochure but baulked at the £5.99 price, instead seeking out the Benny Hill lookalike. After peering at his name badge, I reckoned a chatty approach would best serve my quest for free information, but our conversation was destined to take a surreal turn.
"So, David", I began. "How old is the castle?"
The guide observed me for a moment. "It's Norman, actually", he said.
I blushed. "I'm so sorry. So how old is the castle, Norman?"
The guide shuffled his feet. "No", he said. "The castle is Norman."
I was very confused. "Why did you decide to call the castle Norman?", I asked. Before he could answer, my attention was drawn to the newly-weds, as she was trying to persuade her ailing husband to climb the 150 steps to the battlements. Fearing this could be his last act before an extended period wired up to a life-support machine, I decided to head back toward the town centre.

Once there, I couldn't help but notice the crisp packets and assorted debris blowing around in the breeze. It brought to mind an article in the Cornish Guardian reporting how someone had recently been fined for fly-tipping in the town. Given the amount of litter I now encountered, frankly I'm amazed anybody noticed. Angry and disgusted I marched straight to the town hall to complain, and was relieved to find it open on a Saturday dinnertime.
"What are you going to do about all this litter?" I demanded, only to be abruptly told, "Nothing".
"Why not?", I asked impatiently.
"Because this is a yoga class."
Given I still had time to spare before kick off I decided to join in. However, the instructor was a touch tipsy, which put me in an awkward position.

The game itself was somewhat less eventful but Foxhole duly completed a routine victory in the sunshine, having the game won by half-time largely thanks to some pretty ruthless finishing. Bould latched on to Papaioannou's long ball to expertly fire first-time past Davies inside 70 seconds, before the striker smashed home his second minutes later from close range after the home defence failed to adequately clear a cross from the left. Lostwithiel offered little threat going forward but successfully repelled the countless visiting attacks until Bould's brilliant cross was emphatically despatched by Griffin.

The early stages of the second half continued in similar vein as the home team defended in numbers to keep the score down. However, they were unable to prevent Griffin doubling his tally, coolly converting Whetter's firm headed pass, before Bould, who had seemingly mislaid his shooting boots when squandering golden chances since the break, finally completed his hat-trick from da Silva's centre. Unfortunately the Foxes then rather took their eye off the ball with some sloppy defending and presented Lostwithiel with a couple of Easter gifts which Cook and Facey eagerly devoured.

Foxhole 1 (Bould 26) Veryan 0   KMD cup semi at Sticker

A brilliant goal from Bould settled this tight encounter, the frontman cleverly turning Penhaligon before firing past Holland from 18 yards. The keeper had denied him in the first minute, diving to his right to beat away a penalty awarded for Trebilcock's foul on Griffin, who then immediately lobbed too high when well placed. Foxhole's opener had been coming, but it was followed by a period of Veryan pressure and they were unfortunate not to equalise when Cheshire's header crashed against the bar.

The second half was similarly nip and tuck but the Foxes successfully held on to their slender lead with relatively few scares. In any event, Bullen was, like his counterpart Holland, in superlative form. With defences on top, few clear cut chances were created, Griffin coming the closest when he shot against the far post. I have chosen to make no comment on the excellent Griffin's late dismissal.

Thanks to the officials Paul Cackett, Steve Tootle and Tony Ford. Congratulations to the super Foxes and well played Veryan for an outstanding performance.

Foxhole (4-3-3): Matt Bullen; Nathan Papaioannou, Chris Brown, Lee Whetter, Ryan Wilkins; Nathan Allen, Levi Kerrigan, Rory Barnacle; Richard Griffin, Martin Gilbert, Benno Bould. Subs: Huw Morgan, Bradley Allen, Jowan Dingle, Aidan Dingle, Jowan Dingle.

Foxhole reserves 1 (James 46) Nanpean 2 (May og 8, J Willmott 61) Shoe Boy cup semi at St Dennis

Jordi Willmott's fine goal proved decisive in this entertaining encounter, the striker brilliantly controlling substitute Geach's deep cross before turning Andrews and slotting into the corner. Otherwise there was little to choose between the sides, with the Foxes ultimately unable to mount a significant late rally. They fell behind early on when May fumbled the ball into his own net but, after having the better of the first half, James equalised within 40 seconds of the restart, muscling through to beat Hunkin at the near post. Both Lean and James should have earned penalties when fouled in the box, but each elected to stay on their feet in honest attempts to score themselves. Manning's belated appearance as a flying winger offered some hope but Nanpean held on relatively comfortably.

Well played both teams and thanks to the officials.

Foxhole (4-4-2): Stewart May; Dan Allen, Matt Lean, Steve Kellow, Josh Andrews; Callan Rundle, Caleb Hawken, Jeremy Pascoe, Jake Couch; Richard James, Jamie Robinson. Subs: Jacob Mitchell, Jay Manning.

Foxhole 0 Mousehole 2 (Marsden 49, Fitchett 57) Junior Cup final at Hayle

Foxhole should have been out of sight by the break but were left to rue their inability to convert numerous opportunities. It wasn't top scorer Griffin's day, alas, as he twice elected to pass into an area unoccupied by team-mates when clean through, before crashing a thunderbolt against the bar, while Angove did well to turn Gilbert's close range effort over the bar. Mousehole must have known it was going to be their day when the appropriately named Hands' blatant hand-ball in the box was not spotted.

With the breeze at their backs after the restart, the west Cornwall side soon went ahead with a long range drive from Marsden, who hadn't had a kick until then. The Foxes responded immediately when Griffin's deep centre was headed back by Bould for substitute Reed-Bennett to force home, only for the goal to be mysteriously ruled out. Foxhole's week of bizarre decisions going against them continued when Fitchett somehow got away with controlling a high ball with his arm, which allowed him the space to turn Whetter and fire past Bullen, while Aidan Dingle's excellent full-blooded challenge on Howes was inexplicably deemed worthy of a booking. Mousehole were able to see out time in relative comfort, and credit to them for grinding out a victory having been comprehensibly outplayed for much of the game.

Foxhole (4-4-2): Matt Bullen; Nathan Papaioannou, Chris Brown, Lee Whetter, Huw Morgan; Bradley Allen, Nathan Allen, Levi Kerrigan, Martin Gilbert; Richard Griffin, Benno Bould. Subs: Lee Reed-Bennett, Jowan Dingle, Aidan Dingle, Rory Barnacle, Ryan Wilkins.

Mousehole (4-4-2): Dom Angove; Matt Howes, Tom Hands, Ben Ward, James Tonkin; Jamie Simons, Joe Davies, Jason Simmonds, Callum George; Michael Fitchett, Caleb Marsden. Subs: Jacob Trudgeon, Alex Nixon, Ben Fewkes, Tom McGarry, Tom Hooper.

Thanks to the officials and Hayle FC.

St Dennis 1 (McGall 19) Foxhole 7 (Bould 5, 32 pen, 40, 50 pen, Bradley Allen 18, Lowe og 61, Brown 68)

Only a mathematical miracle can prevent Foxhole from claiming the Duchy Premier division title after an emphatic victory which was never in doubt after Bould's early header from Wilkins' deep centre. Bradley Allen doubled the lead with a close-range finish, although home lone striker McGall soon took advantage of a mishap involving Morgan and Bullen. The Foxes regained the initiative and, following Wills' challenge on Aidan Dingle, their two-goal advantage was restored from the spot courtesy of Bould, who then completed his hat-trick before the break with a smart finish from Brown's outswinging corner.

The second half followed a similar pattern of incessant visiting pressure as the champions-elect settled for three further goals. Brown was again upended in the box, this time by Trudgeon; Bould duly despatched the penalty before being withdrawn to allow a welcome lengthy run out for Jowan Dingle who soon whipped in an inviting cross which Lowe could only slide past George for an unfortunate own goal. There was still a quarter of the match left when Brown made it 7-1 after clever approach work from Barnacle and Whetter, but, despite continuing to create chances, the St Dennis defence held firm despite constantly changing their personnel.

Foxhole (4-3-3): Matt Bullen; Ryan Wilkins, Nathan Papaioannou, Lee Whetter, Huw Morgan; Nathan Allen, Rory Barnacle, Aidan Dingle; Bradley Allen, Benno Bould, Chris Brown. Subs: Jowan Dingle, Martin Gilbert, Levi Kerrigan.

St Dennis ( 5-4-1): Zac George; Jordan Wills, Dave Grose, Rob Astin, Perry Harvey, Brad Lowe; Ash Taylor, Jack Carron, Sam Trudgeon, Kieran Ralph; Nathan McGall. Subs: John Pickering, Chris Cloke, Tristan Orchard.

Well done the super Foxes. Well played St Dennis. Many thanks to the officials Josh Morford, Steven Rowe and Ian Osborne.
