TONIGHT 7pm - MOUSEHOLE vs HELSTON

Recommended Posts

Mousehole face their fourth higher-division opponents in their pre-season schedule when Helston Athletic make the short trip to Trungle Parc tomorrow (Tuesday 7thAugust) for a 7pm kick off.  Entry prices are £2, with concessions at £1 and accompanied under-16s free.  The club will be experimenting with a new ‘electronic’ match programme to replace the printed version for the coming season, with the key information points and the actual team sheets displayed as a slide-show on a screen in the clubhouse.

The Seagulls have so far lost 2-1 at Newquay, beaten Callington Town at home 4-1 and lost 2-0 at home to St Austell.

The Blues’ pre-season has been centred around the annual Dave Gardner Memorial Trophy, in which they beat Porthleven 4-2 and Penzance 1-0 ,but lost 4-1 to overall winners Falmouth Town.

Helston have been managed for the last year by one of the best known and most respected football personalities in Cornwall, Steve Massey, who led them to a creditable highest-ever 9th position in the top flight last season.  As recently as 2011, Helston were competing in the Cornwall Combination League, before gaining promotion to the South West Peninsula League West Division, and after two successive runners-up seasons they were promoted to the Premier Division as champions in 2014/15.

After Mousehole’s dominant display against Callington Town they came up against much tougher opposition on Friday evening, with St Austell making the most of their few chances in an evenly contested game to record a 2-0 win through goals by prolific scorer Liam Eddy on 43 minutes and a Martin Watts 30-yard free kick on 73.  The Seagulls, fielding a blend of established players, young local talent, new signings and triallists, will take heart from their performance against one of the Premier Division’s likely front-runners next season, hitting the post on 29 minutes and creating a series of close-range chances as they took control of the ball and looked the better side for periods of the match.

Mousehole’s West Division campaign starts on Saturday 18th August with the visit of Plymstock United (kick off 3pm) - and the club will be offering free admission to all-comers for this first match of the new season.  After that, the admission price for all first-team games will be set at £4 (£2 concessions), which takes account of ever-rising overheads, but is the first increase since 2007.
