SWPL Goalkeepers

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

First post, so please be kind.

I'm a student at Hartbury College studying Football Studies and Coaching.

My family are from Cornwall and I am home for the summer. Currently writing a thesis on non-league goalkeepers and focusing on those in the West Country. Longer term I am looking to turn this into a book.

Im hoping to get to a number of pre season friendlies and the early league matches before returning to College.

My thesis aims to cover a number of areas but want to also focus on some stats and some opinions.

Stats wise I am interested in:

oldest and youngest goalkeepers registered for SWPL for 2017/18

Tallest keeper

Shortest keeper

Most appearances

Most clean sheets

Any ex-pros keepers that played in SWPL

Any keepers gone from SWPL to pro football

Opinion wise I would be keen to get opinions on best ever SWPL keeper and current. Would then like to interview them for my thesis - so if anyone has contacts I would be grateful.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks all.

Pete

Pistol - there will be many on here who will be able to give you definitive stats, as several have spent many years collating facts and figures on player details.

I would suggest that you look at spending some time with a few of those as a starter (Dave Deacon / Cornishteddyboy / etc etc) - they would separate the 'wheat from the chaff' for you. I would suggest several of the ex pro players like Rappo (striker) or Kev Miller (keeper) would be of use to you - Rappo is a regular contributor on the site (pm him) and has facts and figures on all of his 2003 goals so must have seen some keepers!!

As for youngest keeper for next season, I would hazard a guess that Luke Gwilliam at Camelford (probably 17 by now) is youngest in SWPL Prem and Dan Stedman (16 yo) who I think is still at wendron in SWPL West - may have moved? Liskeard also, I believe have a young keeper?

Also look to speak to Mousehole AFC (via Twitter of Facebook) - they have just launched a new initiative involving pro keeping coaching so will have loads of contact details.

Good luck.

One easy one would be Nigel Martin going on to play in goal for England!

Hi Pistol

There's a few ex pros and some that went on to become pros in the ex format of the league - but I'll leave that to the more qualified statos.

As for current tall keepers, I'll throw our own Ben Mitchell into the hat. Rumour has it that he is the only human that can be seen from space.

Of course he can - fluorescent pink (!)

Nigel Martin never played south western league!!!!!????. U sure

Nigel Martyn played South Western League football for Bugle mid eighties.

I know for fact that in a SWL Cup S/F He was in goal for Bugle and their opponents Falmouth Town had to play youth team Kevin Miller deputising for regular custodian John Dent.

This is recognised as the first time these two Cornish giants met competitively on Cornish soil.

Nigel Martyn had left St. Blazey for Bristol Rovers before Kevin turned out for Newquay.

More recently Kyle Moore (sure i have seen somewhere he was ex Torquay?) then you have cory harvey and Ollie Chenoweth i know they were on the books at argyle but not sure how far they got.  Shortest has to be Ryan Rickard at Saltash.  Most clubs will be Jason Peters. Biggest mouth will be Barrie Wyatt.  Worst will be Josh Gilbert if you ask 100% cornish!

He was good and I think had chance of trials for Liverpool?

Yes he did, he had a few days up at their training ground. This came of a Liverpool scout watching him play for Cornwall Youth against Liverpool Youth in the FA County Youth Cup Semi Final at Kirby Sports Stadium. ( Feb.1995.). Nothing came of the trial and Gary continued to play locally. I can't think of a better 'keeper over the years than Gary.

Nigel Martyn never played for Cornwall Youth.

Did you overlook Nigel or thought you had better?

I think claiming injury whilst at Liverpool , being sent home to rest and playing out field for Polkerris the next weekend  didn't impress Liverpool much either ?

'did'nt impress Liverpool at the time'  that's a bit harsh.

His ability obviously impressed  . It was coming home injured then a few days later playing for Polkerris that didn't impress

Gary 'Teflon ' Turner was a fantastic keeper, without doubt in my mind he should have played in the football league.

Fantastic keeper, when you talk about great keepers Teflon is up there. Teflon, Big Kev, Nigel Martyn, John Dent, Philpy, all head & shoulders above other keepers that have come through the last 30 years

Seen lots of good goalies NeWQUAY use to have a goalie called Paul Collet he was really good Liskeard had Tony Richardson .Phil Hewlett Saltash think the goalies where a lot better in the 70s and 80S No one has come anywhere near as close as Big Kevin Miller and dont think they will he was just class and made goalkeeping look so easy .Tom Annear is good in goal when hes called upon by Falmouth but is a better player nearly forgot his dad Dennis was a real good goalie especially for Newquay when they had a hell of a team

John Dent was on the books at Plymouth Argyle in the early 1970s.

Steve Nute was on the books at Exeter City and played for them in the Western League.

Dave Walter and Matthew Bates at Holsworthy went onto bigger things. The latter was well over 6'3"

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for all your help guys. Some really interesting stuff here. Thank you and will really help me.

Watched my first pre season games yesterday involving SWPL teams. Saw St Blazey v Millbridge. Then Argyle v Saltash.

Two good keepers in the first game. St Blazey had a very young lad - looked very confident though. Millbridge keeper made a few good saves.

Saltash keeper didn't have much to do. Not very vocal and quite short. Not sure if he was their regular.

Looking to get to a few more games this week.

Thanks again for your help everyone.

Yeah certainly played against hundreds of keepers over the years Bob!!! Some great and some not so great! I liked them better!! Good luck with your project Pete ? Hi Dave, Nigel did actually play for the county youth team but he was believe it or not second choice to a lad called Trevor Prophet who Silly Billy mentioned on here who was very good at the time as well. Remember them having a couple of halves each in a couple of the friendlies we played against the East Cornwall X1 and Combo X1 before the serious south west counties games started. Used to only have 3 subs so didn't see Nige much after that except for a few games for Bugle then he was gone!!! The rest is history as they say!! I often wonder if Trev is down the pub telling the story of how he kept Nige out the County Youth side all those years ago!! About 18 months later Nige was playing for Bristol Rovers 1st team and Trev was playing for a team called Heavy Transport or something in the Duchy League!!! Funny old game eh!! ?⚽️?
