Dave Deacon
Tavistock official news release: It is with regret that we announce the resignation of Tim May, Reserve Team Manager for the Club's East Cornwall Premier side. Tim, and his head coach Mark Vernon (Sammo), have left their roles with immediate effect. Both Tim and Mark have enjoyed several stints managing at the Club and have always shown great passion and commitment to developing their squads, often in times of turmoil when lesser men would have ducked the challenge. This is particularly true of their latest tenure, with both joining during the past two seasons when outgoing managers and players had left the squads weakened and in need of rebuilding. Tavistock Chairman, Chris Fenner says "the Club has recently been presented with an opportunity to introduce some additional management and a new crop of younger players into the fold, to strengthen the Reserve Team squad with footballers who, we believe, can break through into the First Team and beyond over the next couple of seasons. This opportunity was discussed with Tim, but we accept that the proposal did not align with his ambitions, for reasons he has discussed and which are quite understandable and fully respected by all at the Club who wish both Tim and Mark all the best for the future." Of his departure, Tim says "I am very saddened to make this decision after some very enjoyable years in the 2nds, I respect the decision the club has taken and wish them all the best for the future. Thank you to all the hard working players, coaches, joint managers, linesman, sponsors and supporters who have shown me loyalty during my time". Fenner continues "whilst the direction we have taken in bringing in new management and a number of talented 18 year olds we are hoping to integrate with the Reserves has certainly raised eyebrows, it has not been done without consultation with both the outgoing reserve team manager and the elder youth sides in the Community Club, who themselves we hope can take a path through the two local feeder teams into First team football once they are ready." "Although a number of our current members may be disappointed and alarmed by this decision, which I accept has been something of a bombshell, we wish to assure all current players that they are most welcome to challenge for places during the pre-season trials, just as they have in any other season, something that is echoed by the new management team whose intention is to blend the youthful vigour and high technique of lads they have developed since primary school with the nous and matchcraft of more experienced heads, many of whom already play for the Club and I hope would consider doing so next season." "In short, this is not a 'takeover' and all players, particularly local lads who want to, will get a fair crack of the whip to become part of the squad and to challenge themselves to develop into our First Team players of the future." "Finally, I would to like to take this opportunity to welcome Ged King, Jeff Spear and their young charges to Tavistock AFC and I know that Ged and Jeff will be reaching out in due course to our current Reserve team players to encourage them to attend pre-season and be part of the ongoing development of Tavistock Football Club." "Should anyone wish to discuss this with me, they are most welcome to do so."
