For anyone who doesn't know, the referee was stretchered off in a neck brace. He was replaced by an assistant and presumably the fourth official took over on the line.

Who took over the position of the fourth official? According to "Matchday Moments" Youtube video, it was a female official kitted out in 'fourth official garb'. Was she qualified? More to the point, is there someone on hand in the 'referee team' to take over in this situation, or do the club have to provide someone in this instance?

The club will normally put a shout out. A lot of the time though one of the 4 officials brings a guest who normally are qualified and they can come and help too.

In many respects sport , particularly doesn't seem to have many memorable incidents like the Jimmy Hill situation anymore . Some from the recent (ish  )past  that older fans will always talk about are  the night the groundsman had to come on the pitch to mark out the penalty spot because the sand and mud were so bad it couldn't be seen . ( Derby v Man City I think )  . Or the dog that ran on the pitch and chased the ball , a player tripped over the dog and sadly I think the injury finished his career .The night the great Eusebiou  shook the Man Utd goalkeepers hand after he'd made a great save from one of his shots . This was in a European championship game . For younger readers " who was Eusebiou ? )  answer , compared to many of todays players , money couldn't buy him !!! . There were many other bizarre incidents in the televised game in the past . I suppose the nearest we'll see to unusual incidents in the modern game is Pogba scoring !!!!!!!

Also with most clubs having a sub keeper on the bench it takes away the excitement of having a Bobby Moore, Peter Beardsley or more recently John Terry, Rio Ferdinand or John O'Shea donning the gloves and the possibility of a big or shock scoreline.
