Second half was a non event. Scorers were Pieter Batenburg and Shaun Middleton [who had another excellent game]. How they missed Batenburg at Hayle last week when so many chances went begging. Well done to referee Stig for playing advantage in the build up to Middleton's goal. The first ever game that Stig has officiated with Newquay involved that the Peppermints have won! Having reffed 6 or 7 previous matches which all ended in defeat, including last saturdays awful loss at Hayle, Stig finally broke his Newquay Duck. A dour match in which the visitors only threatened twice and that was due to defensive mix ups. The Peppermints huffed and puffed and got the result they deserved for the amount of possession they had. A far better performance than last week but still a long way to go before we can reclaim our 'big' club handle. The Newquay Loyal can look forward to the return of Adam Bromley in the next couple of weeks and Andy White early in the new year. Andy Dingle is looking to sign a couple of players to freshen things up in time for the Senior Cup trip to Foxhole on Sat 1st Dec. John Hodge pulled on a very tight home shirt for the last 10mins or so today and showed the younger lads how to fall on their arses when challenged. To be fair, he did send some very clever balls into the box - whereas one poor Foxhole lad is probably wishing he had worn a box as his balls are now somewhere near his lungs after taking a full force shot, not nice to see grown men wince in the main stand ! Darin Morse Posted November 12, 2007 Report Share Posted November 12, 2007 Newquay 2 Foxhole 0 Saturday 10 th November 2007 In a dour struggle between two mediocre teams, Foxhole were unlucky not to at least share the spoils, but the lack of quality is becoming more evident by the week as they slipped to their sixth consecutive league defeat. Facing a stiff wind, Foxhole comfortably repelled the few unconvincing attacks Newquay could muster until conceding two poor goals just before the break. On 39, Harvey rose unchallenged to meet Hunter's inswinging corner, Ryan Holland could only push the ball away and Batenberg rammed home the loose ball. Then, in stoppage time, the disappointing Rushton brushed aside several powder-puff challenges before stumbling over the ball, only for the supporting Middleton to calmly slot into the corner. Such a lead was flattering, as Foxhole had created much the better chances: Friendship burst through only to be denied by a flying Billy Holland, Panter drove narrowly wide and Nicholls' clever feet was not, alas, matched by his finish. Despite a similar decent second half showing, the Foxes were unable to peg back the deficit. Nicholls remained the biggest, if not only, threat and was unfortunate on three occasions, but our offensive play suffered from the reluctance of the midfield quintet to break forward. Although Middleton saw an effort saved, Newquay offered very little, but Foxhole's hard-luck stories are destined to continue until the desperately needed reinforcements finally arrive. The Mount Wise surface is much improved, although still very hard due to the lack of rain in Sun drenched Newquay. Peppermints fans will hope that the win will boost confidence going into Saturday's visit to Devon, although with the minibus not being available, most are staying at Mount Wise for the Combo match. Foxhole and Newquay have managed to beat top Premier sides at home this season, so both sets of fans know their teams are capable of good results, just a little more often would be nice. The Cornwall Senior Cup 2nd Round match on the bowling green surface Foxhole have, should see The Peppermints play the attractive football produced earlier this season and a more convincing win. This match is being played on Sat 1st Dec as Newquay have 5 players in the County Youth side on Sat 24th Nov (just as well it isn't a league match). Fairy cake and a cuppa anyone ?
