Vospers Oak Villa 4 Foxhole 2

Saturday 6th October 2007

Although clearly the better side for virtually the whole game, Foxhole dramatically pressed the self-destruct button with some more calamity defending to gift-wrap the points to their mediocre hosts. The match, however, will be remembered mostly for a shocking display by the referee who denied the Foxes two strong penalty shouts for handball, repeatedly awarded free-kicks for innocuous challenges and then issued a straight red to Hill when a booking would have sufficed.

Rowe headed an early chance wide while impressive debutant Friendship saw a drive saved as Foxhole started brightly, although Vospers sometimes threatened on the break, with Jefferis trying his luck from distance and King nodding Hoblin's cross just past the upright. However, Hill deservedly opened the scoring on 22 with a quickly taken free-kick, and he should have doubled the lead soon after being released by Holland, while Rowe's close range header was smothered.

Unfortunately on 33, Warne, inexplicably employed at left back, was caught upfield, allowing Hoblin acres to size up a centre which King sidefooted home for the equaliser. Dillon, believing Hoblin to have been offside, was cautioned for arguing his case but it was soon forgotten as Hill immediately burst forward to spectacularly find the top corner of Johnson's net. Vospers could barely string two passes together by now but nevertheless drew level when Dillon failed to shepherd out a hopeful punt forward, and Murdoch gleefully beat Holland at the near post.

The Foxes remained in the ascendancy early in the second half, as Hill's effort was marginally ruled out for offside and Johnson was again equal to another Rowe header. But defensive frailty was again soon exposed as the otherwise anonymous King was afforded the freedom of the box to make it 3-2 just before the hour; alas, the ineffective response was the illogical substitution of both Friendship and Nicholls, and a loss of discipline - not helped, it must be said, by the ineptitude of the official.

Adam Holland and Hill voiced what everybody else in the ground were thinking and were booked for their trouble, before Hill was controversially dismissed for his clash with Scott. Warne, too, had his name taken for simulation before the referee typically missed the same player being manhandled off the ball, allowing Jones to run free and complete the scoring at the death.
