Sunday October 7th 2007: FA Women's Cup 3rd Qualifying Round - Cullompton Rangers 3-3(aet) Penzance

(Penzance won 4-2 on penalties)

Penzance pulled off an excellent win at Cullompton Rangers in the FA Women's Cup 3rd Qualifying Round, going through 4-2 on penalties. The Magpies forced extra-time, despite being reduced to ten players with an injury to Clare Boyd, shortly after their substitute was used.

Early chances were missed, with Katie Barker firing over with just the keeper to beat, as the first-half ended goalless. Cullompton took the lead with a smart glancing header but there was a dramatic conclusion hotting up.

In the 86th minute, Becky Hall flicked on an Emma Hurworth long-throw and Rose Knuckey volleyed home the equaliser. But in the 89th minute, Lindsey Williams spilled a long ball and the home centre-forward was gifted an open goal. However, four minutes into stoppage time, Penzance won a corner and threw everyone forward, Julie Lawrence volleying into the top corner from 30 yards.

The hosts regained the lead in the first period of extra-time but with five minutes left, Knuckey fired the ball into the box and Barker hammered a volley home, to take the tie to penalties. Dawn Bateman netted the first spot-kick, Williams was unlucky not to save Cullompton's first. Barker was denied by the bar but Amber Grose coolly found the corner, Hall also converted before Williams made a vital save and Dani Small then buried the winning penalty.

Coach, Christian Lett, said: "I'm really impressed that we could go an hour with only ten players against a strong side like Cullompton. We competed and worked hard for everything, we just wouldn't lie down and we got what we deserved. Emma Hurworth had an asthma attack at the end, absolutely exhausted. Julie Lawrence never stopped running and Amy Hemingway also put in a great performance."

Penzance have been drawn away to Frome Towm in the 1st Round Proper on October 28th, meanwhile they have their first home league match this Sunday, when they host University of Bristol.

Penzance: Williams, - Hemingway, Hurworth, Bateman, Small, - Barker, Lawrence, Boyd, Grose, - Knuckey, Webb (Hall).
