Foxhole 2 Porthleven 1

Saturday 26th April 2014

Foxhole clinched their second successive victory under caretaker boss Lee Hazeldine with another fantastic performance against youthful opponents to avenge a four goal defeat at Gala Parc last August. Playing into a fierce wind and driving rain, the Foxes nevertheless started well and went ahead inside five minutes through Duff's long range effort that dipped late under the bar. However the visitors equalised four minutes later with an even better strike from the outstanding Tom An near and they then enjoyed much the better of the first half. Passing the ball smoothly, Porthleven twice went close to scoring, first when a low drive from the excellent left back Kyle Fraser was palmed around the post by the reassuring figure of Joe Crane on 17 minutes, and then following a good move down the left eight minutes later, Jed McCardie fired narrowly over from outside the box. Despite the pressure the home rearguard stood firm, Wilkins again impressing at right back and debutant Russell an imposing presence alongside Stone as the Foxes reached the break on level terms which they would undoubtedly have taken at the start, having almost snatched an advantage late on but Dennis An near dived to his left to deny Bould.

The visitors came out strongly in the second half so Stone's 54th minute header from Rundle's out swinging corner came against the run of play. However the destiny of the points became even more uncertain on the hour when Rundle saw red following an altercation with Sam Kay, who was cautioned, the heated moment contrasting with the calmer overhead conditions. Foxhole had to therefore withstand another period of intense pressure as the Fishermen eyed an equaliser but the togetherness so evident on Good Friday was again demonstrated to see off the challenge. In fact the Foxes ought to have made the game safe but substitute Bullen was twice unable to open his Peninsula account when well placed, having found space created for him by the ebullient Farbrother.
