Percy Stephens Cup

Mousehole 1-0 Holman Sports Club

Interesting afternoon to say the least! We've never quite got to grips with the whole rolling sub thing and chose a great day to introduce our version of it which involves not taking players off but just adding them and still not break any rules....how can we do that you may ask? Well on our planet starting with just 7 players is a new way of trying to win games!!!!

It's always a bit of a mad time of year with about 3 million evening games that stupid sport which involves standing around most of the day aiming balls at bits of wood and of course here in Camborne we have the annual crafty way of flattening the roads round camborne and creating lots of smoke day courtesy of Mr Trevithick!....needless to say I turn up at Blaythorne to travel and we have only 7 definite players....I may have uttered a naughty word at this point. Luckily Tasky and Foghorn are on their phones.....Caddys not got a smartphone his is one of those nokias from the late 90's which along with cockroaches would be the only thing to survive Armageddon!!!! Luckily we 'apparently' have 4 players that may make the final whistle enroute dreckley

2 minutes before kick off still only 7! Great! But luckily Scott Jones made an appearance.....we had made the cunning plan not to tell Scott about the shortage so his face was very entertaining as he entered the changing rooms and realised that he was doing a bit more running about then he first envisaged.....Scott had sadly turned up slightly too late for changing in time for kick off so we took to the field with the 7.....and a formation of 4-2........yep that was it and quickly renamed it the Rourkes Drift Alamo formation, Mousehole were still waiting for our missing 4 players to turn up when the ref blew for kick off.

Lets just say we didn't do a lot of attacking at the start! Scott eventually turned up 5 min later luckily without a backpack or else with his Ming the merciless beard at the moment he would have looked like the baddie out of Flash Gordon or an AlQaeda suicide bomber! 15min later and amazingly still 0-0 and Sam turned up so we were up to 9!!!!! Jase was upset as we had tied a Bungey cord round our goalpost to stop him venturing too far forward but it seemed to be working and then old man Dave cooper turned up to take us to 10 and the average age up to about 45!

Halftime 0-0

I had ended up starting at right back then left back up front , midfield and was just about ready to get the nod for goalkeeper as I was injured and knackered when the home side went and spoilt our party by scoring! ....bugger!....then a bit of controversy as Jase had a header that looked to have gone over the line off a post as the keeper reached back to scoop it out and with the Mousehole Lino clearly of Russian descent named Vladimir keeping his flag firmly down no goal....Jase was slightly annoyed and made his feelings known he would have probably kicked a tree in frustration if their was one nearby but as anyone knows who read the West Briton lately it would probably have ended up falling on his head!

With 80min played we finally got up to full strength as rudders junior turned up with his much needed 17 year old legs!!! Sadly the best chance to level the scores fell to me and with the choice of either another 30min of extra time or a nice hot shower I took the responsible grown up decision to balloon my header over the bar and spare Wayne, Dave, Scott and myself any further agony...honest :)

So Mousehole go through but a valiant effort by us let down by a few club members who might need to get their priorities straight on a Saturday afternoon!! A whole week of no evening games to come and then fully rested and St Agnes away next saturday

Gwinear Res. 1 -vs- 5 Newlyn NA Res. (HT 0-4)

Yes, bit of a surprising result. We (Newlyn) did not see that coming (especially as we were struggling for a team less than an hour before kick-off with 4 no-shows), and I think it's fair to say that neither did Gwinear. Crap conditions, bobbly pitch with long grass, but 22 blokes ready for action. Fair to say it was a tasty affair from time-to-time. I honestly thought the ref failed to assert any authority when needed on occasion, and allowed a few challenges to take place at times when he really should have blown up. Of course, I am a wimp and it's a man's game, and I am sure my moaning was far worse than any challenge. :( We are pleased with the 3 points that take us off the bottom of the table.

Chacewater 1-1 Marazion Blues

A very close fought contest on a very boggy pitch between 1st and 3rd placed teams. Marazion should've it really after dominating probably the best part of 80 min of this game. Marazion were down to 10 men after just 5 mins after Kyle Pearce was sent of for slapping a Chacewater player after feeling he was kicked in the back of the leg. Despite having 10 men Marazion went about attacking and after a few good saves from the Chacewater keeper they took the lead through Chris Bullock who tucked the ball away nicely from a smart ball in from the left. The rain then began to hammer down.

Half time 0-1

Start of the second half Marazion carried on in much the same way and had a goal from Tanelle Carey disallowed for offside when in fact it was two other Marazion players off. Babacar Diop then put a header over the bar. Chacewater equalised about 20 mins from the end after our linesman had to come on after Chris Bullock got injured leaving g people refusing to run the line. Chacewater scored after the ball appears to be well out of play they crossed in a scored from close range. Chacewater defiantly dominated the last 10 mins or so.

Great hospitality afterwards from Chacewater and looking forward to another close fought game in the cup semi on Thursday

St Buryan Res 1 (0) Storm 1 (1)

Faced with a tough trip down West today against a team that beat us 4-1 just last weekend was made even less appealing with the weather. As we arrived amid yet another downpour (I say DOWNpour but it was probably more of a sidepour as the wind drove the rain nearer to horizontal than vertical) the pitch appeared to have survived the brutal wet onslaught and other than a slightly long playing surface and the early spring breakout of weeds, appeared in good condition.

Despite the loss of a few players to work commitments, we managed to scrape 14 bodies able to play for the game. One of these days (I remained convinced that this will happen despite their best efforts) the players will heed my pre-match talk that encourages them to stop hoofing the ball long and attempt to play football along the floor. Suffice to say, this didn't happen during the first half. The rain relented and the we started the game with the wind at our backs.

In fairness, both sides struggled with the wind in the first half, with Buryan's kick struggling to get any distance before the wind took hold of the ball and Storm players taking turns in trying to find their range as the firm ptch and strong wind meant many early balls were overhit. The men in blue dealt efficiently with most of our attacks whilst occasionally threatened to trouble our keeper. Storm took the lead when a Matt Doble corner was whipped in and Will Annear made me eat my words. As he ran to get himself into the box before the corner was taken "Oh great, Will's gone to lend his considerable height to this one", I remarked. Although the inswinger from the left was probably on target, Will made sure by not only leaping like a salmon, but over-jumping the ball and shouldering it in from at least a yard out.

We were unable to find any other way through until the ref blew for half time. With a familiar ring to the half-time talk, we took to the field knowing that it was going to be a tough half and that we had to play football against the wind, as lumping it long and chasing was as effective as every other time we have tried it. To a man, they battled admirably and within the first 15 of the half had created 4 chances , more than Buryan had managed in the whole first half. The plan was simple, defend like hell and hit them on the counter, it was working well.

However when the Buryan keeper collected the ball from one of these attacks, his long punt upfield was met with a superb cushioned header from the big lad up top, who squared the ball for a fairly simple close range finish. At this point the flood gates could have opened, but instead we dug in further and restricted efforts on goal to headers from corners and some long range efforts. Our best chance probably fell to David Mitchell in the area but a superb piece of defending from number 7 (Rebeiro, I believe, who was outstanding for the whole match) didn't allow him to get his shot away. As the minutes of the half ticked away there was a thought that we may have actually been able to snatch the winner, and Annear and Doble managed to se efforts off target when an accurate strike may have altered the scoreline.

St Buryan were a good side and a good bunch of lads and, as usual, well reffed by Porky. Best of luck to St Buryan for the rest of the season.

St.Ives Mariners 2 v Helston 3rds 3

Possibly the most challenging Saturday morning yet as a manager yet...due to weddings work commitments and dueto an injury list as long as a david moyes losing streak at one point this morning we had 9 players. The thought of having to play myself after 6 years of not playing was not one I relished. And with no goal keepers available for all 3:teams at Helston today made the prospect of todays game even less appealing. So after looking at the list of our registered players and a few phone calls later we had manage to raise a squad of 13 including yours truly. ..so really a squad of 12! With the rain pouring down and going 1 down within in 10 minutes this looked like a long wet miserable afternoon. But with the rain stopping the boys dug in and played some good football at times and ended up 3-2 winners. Special mention to Craig kimpton for donning the gloves and putting in a great performance. Three points was all that mattered. Well played to Mariners. .good bunch who played some decent football in an entertaining match

Threemilestone Reserves 2 Frogpool 3

Scorers - Ten Legs x 2, Alex Gray

Frogpool lined up missing a few key men as Neil Nakata Carter was at home looking after his new born baby son ( congrats from all of us ) and Jason Hotly was un available due to work.

This game was played at Frogpools pitch as Malpas was not available. The rain had hammered down and there was a lot of standing water on the surface despite the best efforts from Nick Mallaber.

Threemilestone started at a fast tempo pressing well and creating a few chances. Frogpool went in front when Danny Munday did well over on the left flank and put in a low cross for ten legs to slide in and guide it past Dan Bennetts in the TMS goal. Lee booker did well not to touch it at the far post as he would of been off side. Alex Bawden hit a shot after a great run from Ribery, on to the post.

This gave the away side a bit of a lift and they then had a few chances and shots on goal. Threemilestone made it one all when Matt Luff had the ball out wide cut inside and hit a curling shot into the side of goal.

At this point the momentum was back with TMS. They scored a second when Nick Lasseter tried a Messi drag back but made a mess of it instead for Matt Luff to nick the ball and put in a cross for the TMS forward to side foot the ball past IanJay.

Frogpool kept going and Alex Bawden had the ball wide on the wing, and with a great bit of trickery beat his man and then pulled it back for Alex Gray to hit a low side footed shot which took a little nick of a TMS defender and went into the goal. Game on 2-2

James Ribery Reburn was picking the ball up in the wet conditions and running at the TMS defenders with two or three men on him mostly.

TMS could of had a penalty when Liam Patterson was played in and Rowan slid in to make the tackle. Patterson appealed for the pen but it was turned down by the ref. There was contact with the player.

Then after a corner Ten legs hit a low half volley which hit the post and went in to make it three two to Frogpool.

Will Harvey hit a long range half volley that Ian Jay just managed to tip over which could of made it 3-3. We hung on to claim a win against one of our fiercest rivals. This was a really good game to play in , end to end, some great tackles and play in very harsh conditions. Some good banter on the pitch looking toward to the next game which will be err, at our pitch again.

A great win and MOM was Alex Gray who had a solid game at the back.
