Mawnan 4-4 St Day (HT 1-1)

A fairly low key first half saw Mawnan take the lead (Adam Keenan), before St Day equalised to make it level at half time.

The second half saw 6 goals and Mawnan come back from 4-2 down with goals from Huw Gibbon, Shaun Rickard and Ashley Johnson.

I could give many excuses as to the result in this one, the lousy evening games that regularly sees one side turning up just before kickoff whilst the other team are fully prepared, the lack of availability of players in key positions, the incredibly frustrating late withdrawal/non-appearance of some players, that teams of larger clubs are, and well within their rights to do so, able to call on 2 players to assist them, the players that have to play carrying injuries due to the overload of games at this time, some players playing like they have a huge chip on their shoulder, the list goes on. But I won't use any of those reasons/excuses. At the end of the day we were beaten by a better side.

Playing against the wind in the first half, we didn't really get ourselves in the game. Penryn played with energy and pace that looked threatening. They took the lead when a long punt forward wasn't quite judged by keeper Allen and allowed the striker to nip in. His shot was smartly saved by the ball fell to another Penryn player to lash home from all of 5 yards.

The second goal came from a central free kick that was well struck. The ball cleared the wall and curled towards the bottom left corner. Allen did well to get down to it but the ball bounced just in front of him. I'm not sure whether he got hands to it or it hit a bobble but the ball did bounce unusually highly before crossing the goal line.

The half-time whistle gave us a chance to reorganise and regroup and we were better after the break but struggled to build any periods of heavy pressure. The balance of play was much more even. Kellow and Mitchell went close with efforts and the Penryn keeper saved well when Kellow was 1-on-1. The third came when a corner wasn't cleared and after the ball pinged around the 6 yard box it fell to the man inside the edge of the box who fired home.

There were chances at both ends as the game wound down but it stayed 3-0. Well played Penryn and good luck for the rest of the season.
