Boxing Day Football

Premier:

Mawnan 4-2 Constantine.

A typical Boxing Day derby game. The pitch was looking in good condition despite the recent bad weather and a decent sized crowd of 50-60 people turned out to watch one of the few games still on.

Mawnan started the strongest for the first half an hour, creating chances and knocking the ball around well. The Constantine keeper kept them at bay with one great save at close range. However, Mawnan were not to be denied and soon scored 2 goals in close succession.

After half an hour either the Constantine players finally digested their Christmas dinner, or the Mawnan players hangovers kicked in. Either way for the last 15 minutes of the half, Constantine took a grip of the game and started putting the Mawnan defence under pressure. his pressure told when they pulled a goal back with 5 minutes to go in the half.

Half Time 2-1

The second half started as the first half ended, with Constantine putting pressure on Mawnan, forging a couple of early chances. Constantine were soon level when a 30 yard screamer ended up in the top corner. At this stage Constantine looked the most likely to go on and win the game, but Mawnan awoke from their second half slumber and worked their back into the game, once more taking the lead with a well worked goal.

The entertainment wasnt finished yet - soon after Constantine were awarded a penalty for what looked like a cleanly won tackle. Fortunately for Mawnan, the ball was struck over the bar. Then Mawnan had a shout for a penalty for handball on the line, which wasnt given.

Mawnan finally sealed the game with 5 to go when a cross was tucked away by the onrushing striker.

All in all a good 3 points for Mawnan. Game played in good spirit by both sides. Glad to see Constantine back on the up after a difficult preseason also.
