Falmouth Town First Team 1983-84 (Combination Season)

Recommended Posts

Who was the regular goalkeeper during this season 1983-84 ?

Looking at one programme v Bridgwater Town (0-1) in the F A Cup it showed Dave Casley

(The only time a Combination club has appeared in the F A Cup)

The only other programme away v Penryn (Last game of the season) shows Kevin Toy

I have collated all the keepers (1950-2013) but that Combination season is from the "Dark Ages" and not recorded.

The team that played in the F A Cup match was-

Dave Casley-Phil Kellow-Barry Whitehead-Steve Van-Evelingen-Graham Heard-Geoff Moyle-Nigel Molin-Norman Ashe-Mike Peckover-Neil Phillips-Robbie Stephens

Manager-Dave Wadd

Perhaps someone from the above team may help.

I remember Kevin Miller playing for Falmouth away to St.Blazey 1985-86 (When John Dent was unavaiable).

Wish I had the programme

In goal for Blazey was Nigel Martyn (Who went on to play for England)

It was probably the first and only time these two Goalkeeping legends played against each other on Cornish soil. (Unless they met at Youth level)

They did later cross paths (Professionally) in the F A Cup which the Daily Mirror had a full page write up.

Hi Mike

I joined the club in 1985 and prior to me I think the keeper was Alan Johns, not sure though if he was there that season

Hi Guys, yes I was at Falmouth for a while following Dave Wadd from Penzance (Al Johns)

Yes Alan you played in season 1984-85 (the season after the Combo') (14 Appearances)-

Others that season Peter Collins (17)-Martyn Kimmins (13) Kevin Toy (1)

Pete Collns or Alan Johns mike,i remember beating them with two injury time goals in cup semi final at port :)end of that season a young Kevin Toy was in goal and had a blinder if my memory serves me right

Just found that game Perry, 28-01-84 CCL Cup Porthleven 3 Falmouth Town 2 (Phillips & Burleigh)

So that would be another appearance for Kevin Toy

I have added to the notes "2 late goals by Bullock"

Hi Mike, a few "old legends" mentioned on this thread mate!! Don't think Nige or Kev would have played against each other at youth level, there's 3 years between them, 47 and 44 although Kev did play up a year or two on occasions where he was just as strong then! Was talking to Kev a few weeks ago and he said I was the only player to have scored 5 goals past him in one game in all his career at any level so chuffed with that!! Always knew Kev was special but Nige is a great story really, didn't put on a pair of gloves until he was 17, got in our county youth team a year later and the rest is history!! 40 caps at all levels for England I think it is!? Great to see blokes from down here do well, all the best Mike x

Thanks for that Mark, so it looks like the only time they met in Cornwall was that evening game at Blaise Park.

Like I said i wish I had the programme

Although I didn't see it I know Kevin was in goal for Falmouth and I had word with Ronnie Barr a few years back to say he remembers heading the only goal past Nigel Martyn.

Kevin left soon after for Newquay and Nigel moved just as quick to Bristol Rovers following a PSF at St.Blazey

The next time they met was in a F A Cup tie and made headlines in the National press-I could work out the game but it would involve two of these clubs Crystal Palace,Watford-Birmingham City-Leeds United.

Hi Mike, just to let you know that Denty joined Falmouth Town before he thinks he did, if you take a look at the combo team that won the league that year Denty will be in it, as I stood in for him against Penryn but when the photo was taken at the end of the game I gave my shirt to John as he should have played that game and had played a few prior to this. Unfortunately we lost 1-nil to a Ray Rice header. Kevin Miller never played in that Combo side I think he may have even played outfield for the Fal/Hel team. I am sure at some stage that a goalkeeper called ****** Truscott was at Town. Are you sure that Martin Kimmins played Combo at Town as I thought he came and played SWL from Perranwell, Steve Vanevelingin played quite a few games around that time. Regards Kevin Toy

According to Dave Wadd programme notes for 1985-86 he signed John Dent and Paul Truscott as keepers both vying for the No.1 jersey

Did you join from St.Austell-John?

John eventually got the nod making his Debut At Holsworthy 17-08-85 (3-0 Phillips 3)

-Paul Truscott made 5 appearances and then moved on to Penryn

Martyn Kimmins played in 1984-85 season -after the Combination season(1983-84) Kevin.

Hya Mike, Robbie is right it was Andy Richards who mostly played that combo season. Dave Wadd had retired to Spain but came back and became manager about 6 games into that season. He signed Denty the following season from St Blazey. I seem to remember Steve Van putting on the gloves a couple of times that season as well.Hope this helps and see you soon.

They pulled out of the Western League & thought they could go straight back to the SWL, but I think the SWL said you can't do that. Because we were already entered in the FA Cup, we were able to fulfil that fixture. We were unlucky, and lost a close game 1-0 at home to Southern League Bridgwater Town.

I understand the SWL committee wanted Falmouth back but it was the member clubs who rejected by vote their application.

just like the "Old pals act" of the Football League era, rejecting the likes of Yeovil & Wigan, season on season.

It worked out for Falmouth as they created one of the great Town teams in their history by building in the Combination League.

This left them in good stead on their return to the South Western League 84/85.

I remember playing against you for Mullion in the 1st round of the league cup which i think we won 2-0. For some reason the game had to be replayed which was a draw and Fal went on to win the next game. If it was for an unregestered player im sure the game would not have been replayed but given to the other team?

Think you only put 4 past me in one game rappo, 2 in each top corner ;-) so that puts me one up on kev lol although I think he is on his own as the only keeper not to of lost a first team game at falmouth, we both shared that one till I covered chappy at parkway under Alan a couple of years back :)
