It was my understanding that Referee assessors don't announce their presence at games, instead they contact the home secretary the morning of the game to confirm it is still on, and that the referee they are due to assess is the man in charge

west1, who told you that, any conversation between the referee and an assessor is between them and I for one cannot believe that comment regarding club assistants, of course they are allowed to flag for offside if that is what the referee wants them to do. Now if you travel up north club assistants were only asked to give ball in & out of play no offsides ( not sure if it is still done ).

If you watch some of the guys that are asked to run the line, it's a bleddy joke. They haven't got a clue what they're doing. Refs need assistants to call offsides, there is no way they can be expected to be well positioned for every decision. However, watching some of the performances of club linemen, I wouldn't be surprised if some refs just ignore them. And then there are those that cheat.......all adds up to a hiding to nothing.

it also depends if the lino is qualified if not that has been the case in the past as most junior games the lino is the sub and is usually peed off that he is not starting and does not give it his full attention

However, Alan has been known to interpret his role as a referee assessor somewhat differently and idiosyncratically; and even the CCFA have tried on several occasions to make him draw his horns in.

I think he's one of the great characters of the game, personally ! Ah, that bracing Marazion air !

I won't be mentioning the late Emperor Napoleon in this post at all.

As the assistant referee for this game I can advise that the instructions from the referee were "ball in and out of play, offsides wait until the ball is with the player who is offside and then flag, if you see something on my blindside then flag and I will either stop play and ask what it was or will play the advantage". Alan Wallace said it was an FA Law that no assistant below combination level can give an offside decision. So I take it all the referees that do Trelawny League games are going against an FA law.

I can assure you that he did state that. When I was stood by the dugout where he was assessing from he told me I am not allowed to flag for an offside in Trelawny League Football. The lowest level a club assistant can do this is combination league. And he stated it was an FA law. Whether that is Cornwall FA I am not sure but it is what he said

The guy does sound a bit... interesting..

So if the linesman doesn't flag.. and the referee is on the other side of the pitch.. how does he know it's offside?!

Football, tiz a funny ole game innum! i was also there, and i did notice the marazion lino and the ref in deep discussion, perhaps refs are being tought that now, the ref was certainly acting the part and did everything prim and proper even if he did get a few things wrong with decisions..

We are all but human after all

what is the point in being an assistant if you cannot give any decisions.

in the combo you have to provide a qualified person and then are told you cannot give anything other than in and out of play or offside. what is the problem if you are qualified.

or is it just the minority of clubs who cannot be bothered to get some one qualified

and please don't bring up about cheating as the majority of assistants that I have had dealings with do their best which is all we can ask of anyone at our level of football

Postman Pat, I will try and clear up a few points, firstly assistants do not make any decisions, they are all the referee`s, Assistants should carryout the duties allocated to them by the referee before the start of the match. There is no FA law which states that club assistants should not be given the job of informing the referee of a player in an offside position. I have always asked my club assistants to give me offside`s but I always retain the right to play on if I decide it`s not interfering with play.. This is so strange that I can only think something has been misheard or a comment taken out of context.

I hope this helps.

I think PP will know the LOAF as he's a qualified ref, although not active at present.
