West Cornwall 4-3 Torbay Schools

West Cornwall pulled off a major shock to beat one of the favourites to win the English Schools Football Association cup and are now rewarded with a home draw against Swansea Schools in the next round. Coaches Jake Ash and Charlie Davis expressed their pride in the boys best performance in their third season together as a squad. They got off to the best possible start in the 14th minute when inspirational captain Josh Richards played in Jack Rapsey and as the striker was about to shoot he was scythed down for a penalty kick. Rapsey brushed himself off to send the keeper the wrong way from the spot and four minutes later it got even better when midfield live wire Tyler Tonkin was fouled 25 yards from goal and centre back Joel Allen smashed the free kick into the bottom corner. He almost repeated the feat minutes later but the keeper tipped that effort around the post before Rapsey shaved the crossbar with a powerful dipping volley but then the visitors showed their ability boasting several football league academy players they scored twice in three minutes with two superb long range strikes to level. The battling young cornishmen regained the lead just before half time when man of the match Richards drilled low cross was sliced into the roof of the net by a Torbay defender. The hosts had to withstand some expected heavy pressure in the second half against the strong wind and rain but home keeper Ross Atkinson showed a safe pair of hands before being eventually beaten with a powerful strike. West Cornwall were matching their opponents in all areas of the pitch and Thomas Philcox ended a fine one touch passing move by sending speedy winger Henry Rowe in behind the full back and he produced an inch perfect cross for substitute Rewan Curnow to head down into the net at the near post. The final ten minutes were spent defending with Matt Pierera and Allen making some fine interceptions to secure a tense and famous win for the talented Duchy youngsters.

Was at the match and it was a fantastic performance from the Cornish lads, the best game of football I've seen at any level this season. I've been watching most of these boys play since they were 9 or 10 and its a real pleasure to see them perform to this high level against excellent opponents. The lads obviously idolise Jake and would run through a brick wall for him and Charlie, the coaching and encouragement to play good passing possession football that they give the team is phenomenal and they have built up a great team spirit which stood them in good stead in this game in the second half when all the boys ran their socks off in testing conditions. There are some real talented young footballers in this county as last seasons u13 team proved by becoming national champions! Congrats to everyone involved in the West Cornwall set up for this result, it was a pleasure to watch. :-)

As the referee for the game I can only agree with Rappo. Anticipation of a win didn't seem high, but their confidence just grew and grew in not ideal playing conditions and I thought the no.8 was outstanding, a true captains performance. Good to catch up Rappo and watch that sharp tongue of yours LOL
