Michael Rabone
Saltash 5 - 0 St. Merryn Any hopes of a cup upset were dashed in a key moment of controversy late in the first half as division five leaders St. Merryn made the long journey to table-topping premier league side Saltash. The quality gap, characterised by the fifty-seven places that separated the Duchy League opponents prior to kick off, was not quite as apparent during the opening stages of the first half as the visitors took the game to their high-flying and unbeaten opponents, although there was a nervy moment during the first minute as a swirling cross dropped favourably only for St. Merryn to benefit from an air-shot a matter of inches from the goal line. Having had the benefit of playing on a quality surface the previous week, the visitors struggled to play any sort of football in the long grass and heavy conditions and it became apparent the hosts were using the elements to their advantage, with all of their effective attacking play emanating from the top side of the slope. The division five side should have edged ahead when fine work on the right from Anton Murt resulted in a curling cross that was met by leading scorer Luke Worrall, who watched on in agony as his goal-bound effort struck the legs of the isolated Saltash goalkeeper. Saltash were beginning to look frustrated at their inability to break their opponents down, with some bizarre behaviour epitomised by the Saltash captain who degraded to the level of making noises as his marker sought to clear the ball. The Saltash goalkeeper also created a couple of nervy moments for the home side as his repeated anxiety to collect crosses resulted in last minute indecision to lead with his feet whilst under no immediate pressure. Worrall and strike partner Richard Hughes were causing a degree of discomfort for the Saltash defence yet the visitors failure to convert the half-chances that were presented ultimately proved costly as the home side edged ahead. A key moment of quality gave the hosts the advantage, somewhat against the run of play as a neat turn in the box resulted in a low shot that took a slight deflection to nestle into the bottom corner, much to the relief of the hosts. Despite the setback, St. Merryn's optimism remained unwavering as the visitors continued to counter attack with their back four well supported by some excellent handling by goalkeeper Ben Humber to ensure that they were doing just enough to keep the margin tight. Yet it was a major talking point that changed the dynamics of the game as Saltash scored a second goal late in the first half amidst some bizarre circumstances. A deep cross appeared to be sailing out of play at the far post until it was neatly recovered with a fine touch and a smart turn. When a powerful shot was unleashed from a seemingly impossible angle, the ball dropped into the goal having appeared to enter via the exposed gap in the net between the seldom seen square goalpost and the stanchion . After a brief moment of indecision, not helped by the clear gap in the net, the match official consulted the assistant and having been unable to ascertain how the ball had entered the net, the goal was given to the clear relief of a Saltash team that had appeared uncomfortable by the narrow margin. With the offending piece of goal net repaired during the break, St. Merryn made the worst possible start to the second half which effectively ended any hopes of a cup upset. A fine turn on the corner of the box allowed space in the St. Merryn area and when defender Michael Rabone sought to withdraw from a challenge, the referee made the decision to point to the spot following a drastic looking tumble in the box. Humber was inches away from repelling the resulting spot-kick, opting to go the right way but unfortunately not quite being able to turn the ball around the post at full-stretch. The game degraded as a clumsy challenge from behind on Worrall near the half way line prompted an altercation, which was further fuelled by the bizarre and inarticulate ramblings of the offending Saltash player. The inevitable followed as the hosts ultimately reinforced their supremacy as St. Merryn aimed to reduce the deficit, which should have been the case moments after conceding when Mike Shearer's cross took two deflections, the second touch eluding striker Luke Worrall by a matter of inches. St. Merryn toiled and found themselves regularly under pressure, with a combination of some profligate finishing, fine goalkeeping from Humber and a number of last-ditch challenges keeping the margin down as the visitors struggled to contend with the combination of quality opposition and the strong wind. Saltash added a fourth when a relatively tame low shot managed to sneak into the bottom corner and the home side scored a firth and final goal late on when a marginal offside call worked out favourably for the premier league leaders. Josh Dark was denied a late consolation when the Saltash goalkeeper managed to recover to tip his goal-bound strike around the post and despite the eventual margin of victory for the home side, St. Merryn manager Keith Simmons reinforced his pride in the collective effort of his side as they seek to make amends in their next division five encounter with local rivals St. Mawgan. St.Merryn were never in the game saltash had pretty much all the possession and St.Merryn posed little threat the only thing your team were good at was fouling and being abusive, absolute nonsense of a match report. Shifty
Camborne Park 3-3 Mawnan Mawnan win 3-2 on penalties. Tough game against a high flying Division 4 side who showed the confidence from their unbeaten start to the season. Mawnan started brightly taking an early lead up the slope, then hitting the bar. However, Camborne worked there way into the game and equalised after about 15 minutes. Camborne know how to play their pitch and put us under pressure, though we hit the bar again in the first half. In the second half again Mawnan started brightly but couldnt break down a resolute Camborne defence. Camborne then broke and scored a fine goal to really put Mawnan up against, but they again upped their game and a free kick across the box caused confusion, and Mawnan equalised. The rest of normal time passed with little incident. The same must be said for the majority of extra time, though Camborne hit the post from 5 yards out. The real excitement was saved for the last couple of minutes. Camborne scored a well worked goal on 118 minutes, which looked to seal the upset, but Mawnan were not to be denied and on 121 minutes a shot from the edge of the area found the bottom of the net to take the game to penalties. Mawnan scored there first 3,with Camborne missing 2 of their first 4. Mawnan could have finished it but the next kick missed. The next Camborne stepped up to keep his team in the cup but a great save from the keeper meant Mawnans name is in the next round of the cup. A great performance from Camborne Park, who in all honesty can feel disappointed they didnt make it through, but cup runs are made of battling performances. Good luck to Camorne Park for the rest of the season. Good food afterwards also

Congratulations to Stithians! ... Game would have been a class watch for the Neutral as has been mentioned. Scoreline fluctuated and ended 3-3 after 90 minutes. Stithians then scored early in extra time before we left it late to Equalize. Cruel way to go out on Penalties however on the face of it you can't really expect to concede four and progress in normal circumstances. Cloughie
Get in You've got it all wrong, I'm not the manager of St Merryn, Keith Simmons is the manager. He makes the decisions on who and who doesn't play for the club. As for today, St Merryn gave it a go and maybe with a bit of luck, It could have been a closer score, but never really a cup upset. I think St Merryn can be proud of there efforts, and now concentrate on their league fixtures.
AJ715
West Cornwall 5-3 Newbridge Athletic James Tregay 2 Matt Montgomery (Pen) A very windy day today down in Camborne and it played some part in the game for sure, but all in all it was a great advert for Trelawny football with both teams playing well. Newbridge knew this game wasn't going to be easy and it didnt help turning up with a bare 11 but we gave it our all. Newbridge started well and went in front with a chip from James Tregay at a tight angle, with the keeper making a bit of a meal of it and with the strong wind it ended up in the back of the net. West Cornwall then started to play some good football, an effort destined for the top corner was well saved by myself, I think everyone was suprised that i managed to tip it on to the bar with an excellent save. Unfortunatly it came back to a West Cornwall player to tuck it into the bottom corner. The game was then fairly even for a good 15 minutes with both teams having chances but nothing coming from them. Newbridge then went back infront when a ball through to James Tregay he beat two defenders and put it in past the on rushing West Cornwall keeper. West Cornwall once again equalised when a call to get out ended up with one of the Newbridge player's not pushing out and leaving 3 West Cornwall players on side. The shot was once again excellently saved with quick reactions but the rebound was tucked in with any of the 3 players who could of put in. Half time 2-2. The second half was a much different game with West Cornwall the better side for most of second half but Newbridge defended well to keep West Cornwall out as much as possible. West Cornwall then took the lead for the first time in the game when a shot was deflected off a Newbridge defender to wrong foot the keeper and settle in the bottom corner of the net 3-2. West Cornwall continued the pressure and with some sloppy defending and poor challenges resulting in a freekick on the edge of the box. The wind assisted well struck freekick hit the bottom far corner to make it 4-2. Then the goal of the game came from about 35 yards, a superb strike which looked like it could be going over dipped just in time, cracked the underside of the top left hand side of the bar and hit the back of the net 5-2. Newbridge never gave up and themselves won what looked liked a freekick just out side the box from a crunching challenge was given as a penalty. Matt Montgomery sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 5-3. Newbridge picked their game up for the last 15 minutes but was unable to get back into the game. A few more shots that never really threatened the Newbridge goal many of them going well wide. The whistle went and West Cornwall did enough to put themselves into the next round final score 5-3. Joint Man of the Match: Aaron Jones, made some excellent saves to keep the scoreline down despite conceeding the 5 goals and Kyle Jones, had an excellent game with not alot going past him all game and made some superb tackles Good luck to West Cornwall in the next round, was a great game but the better team won on the day, thanks for the hospitality back at the pub. Mawgan. Man of the match - Craig Allen one of the worst match reports ever!! St.Merryn were never in the game saltash had pretty much all the possession and St.Merryn posed little threat the only thing your team were good at was fouling and being abusive, absolute nonsense of a match report. Count yourself lucky if the ref hasn't put anything in his match report appalling behaviour by the visitors bunch of grown ups acting like babies! Farley
Saltash pitch is probably the worst in duchy prem. Grass in rarely cut but unfortunately they have to make do with what they have. Obviously Saltash were far too strong for St Merryn. You can't lose 5-0 and try to say it was a close game.

Michael Rabone
Thank you for providing your view of the second goal. Of course there will be subjective elements as I can only write what I see or hear (and remember!) from the pitch. I'm sure there will be errors but I'd prefer to give it a shot and contribute something constructive to the forum. Why not give it a go? Read between the lines and you will see regular reference to the quality of what we were up against yesterday and how the game evolved into a one-sided affair. I can't recall the referee getting too excited about the things referred to in an earlier post either, so I'd be intrigued to know what his report will entail? For a number of reasons, the second half was tough, but we never expected anything else. I'd imagine that Saltash would also find it an eye-opener playing a team from an equivalent higher level. I enjoyed the challenge, although I thought it was a shame that the talented number 9 couldn't have found a better way to express himself than to use such vulgar language. It also appears that the comment above is indicative of a general lack of humility; the dizzy heights of duchy premier league football! Good luck in the next round gents and also for your pursuit of the league title. Fingers crossed the two lads with a bit of charisma will be able to wash off their trick or treat masks too!
