EngLands ranking in world football

Agree on welbeck, Cole is still arguably the best defending left back at our disposal. Henderson is poor at best, Sterling aint even playing for his club. Walcott to come back and push townsend for right mid field position.

Jury is still out on Gerrard and Lamps in the middle of the park??

Oh and Jack Wilshire.

definate starter for me!

What happened to Walcott's self-definition as a striker ?

Cleverly, terrible. I wouldn't wish him on Penzance. Walker, too many tattoos on the brain. Smalling, underling to too many better defenders than he is and unlikely to blossom unless he leaves ManUre for a club where he can be top dog.

Townsend: reluctantly, I must admit he's been a bit of a revelation. Equally reluctantly, Baines needs more games but I think he's closer in quality to Cole than he used to be. I think we'll need to do a lot of defending in Brazil and the first job for any left-back will be in his own penalty area.

How ironic that Southampton start producing international players only after they have dumped their nice English manager with whom everybody had sympathy and taken on an Argentinian.....hope we haven't seen the last of Ricky Lambert, unless Hodgson brings back Crouch ! Thought the side had become a bit short, actually. Perhaps they're going to re-open Geevor to give them somewhere to hide safely when they fail in the World Cup and they can't employ anybody too tall.

Lamps, Carrick, and Gerrard can still do a job, but need some legs around them to facilitate the cartage of the canine faeces.....I'm not sure Wilshere's strong enough, he's always injured, the Dyer or Anderton of his generation. I like Milner, he runs through brick walls.

Might get to the last 16 and lose to Cote d'Ivoire and Drogba......happy days ! :)

Englands strongest starting 11 in my opinion.

Hart

Walker, Jagielka, Cahill, Cole

Walcott, Gerrard, Wilshere, Townsend,

Rooney, Defoe.

Subs.

Baines,Carrick,Lampard,Barkley,Dawson,LLana,Johnson.???

I have probably missed out some notable players......

Glad you included Defoe. Why he's not given a start more often beats me. Play him just behind the main striker - the man certainly knows where the goal is.

i like defoe but he does not play for spurs very often , but then a lot of Englands finest are like that

OK - I must be bored.

Look at the starting line-ups for the recent England v Germany game: -

Weidenfeller (Borussia Dortmund – CL)

Westermann (Hamburg – not in Europe, but ex FC Schalke 04 and played lots of CL)

Mertesacker (Arsenal – CL)

Boateng (Bayern Munich – CL)

Schmelzer (Borussia Dortmund – CL)

Lars Bender (Bayer 04 Leverkusen – CL)

Sven Bender (Borussia Dortmund – CL)

Götze (Bayern Munich – CL)

Kroos (Bayern Munich – CL)

Reus (Borussia Dortmund – CL)

Kruse (Borussia Monchengladbach – not in Europe)

Hart (Man City – CL)

Walker (Spurs – EL)

Smalling (Man Utd – CL)

Jagielka (Everton – not in Europe)

Cole (Chelsea – CL)

Townsend (Spurs – EL)

Gerrard (Liverpool – not in Europe)

Cleverley (Man Utd – CL)

Lallana (Southampton – not in Europe)

Rooney (Man Utd – CL)

Sturridge (Liverpool – not in Europe)

You could see that even though Lallana is an excellent player, he has not got the experience of the very top level games. He will not get it at Southampton. He will have to play for England several times to get used to the step-up in quality you need at international level. Same goes for some of the others.

Nuff said.

I know only a friendly but apart from shaw and llalana for the rest they were just going through the motions ,for so called players looking to be in the World Cup squad it looks like it could be a very small squad or early plane home , England has no world class players no one who can turn a game in seconds ,the set up for England is not getting better is it a cultural issue . Or just bad coaching at a young age ,or perhaps playing for your country does not mean as much as picking up big wages in the prem ,as the media keeps chirping on the best league or is it all hype to keep us buying tickets ,papers ,tv sports packages or on line

Englands strongest 23 (Almost).
Hart - Foster - Forster

Walker, Jagielka, Cahill, Johnson, Jones, Smalling, Shaw, Baines. Cole.

Lampard, Gerrard, Carrick, Lallana, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Townsend, Sterling.
Rooney, Sturridge, Welbeck, Lambert.
Townsend appears to be the flavour of the month but I would take Lennon instead and make room for Terry.

In 1966 the average age was 2 years per player older, people gave us no chance with so many older experienced players but with a mixture of young and old we won through, the effort of the younger members like Alan (never stopped running) Ball and the old man at the back Jack Charlton organising things, like then we need a mix of older and younger players now.
No European team has won the World Cup in South America, this time around a win win situation for us would be a semi final place, we can but dream, however, our biggest downfall is a wide open defence, I have seen every home international this season and on every occasion the defence has been exposed, lacking in organisation, no leader, Iike him or loathe him the man for that job is John Terry, the suits made it impossible for him to continue his international career, I still think Terry retired from international football to save the skins of the stuffed shirts at the F.A. He may have slowed up a bit but our country needs him, we would be a better competitive team with our quick wing backs to play five at the back. Denmark were not that good a team but it was Joe Hart who saved us.

Has any country, ever required the use of a 3rd goalkeeper in a major championship ? I'd actually lose a keeper and try to bolster positions in defence where we are weak or add a forward to mix things up. Totally agree that John terry has been the best central defender in the Prem League this season, Chelsea don't score many despite being top of the pile, the Terry/Cahill partnership at the back is immense. Like most, I have slated Milner in the past, but his performances for City this season have been superb. I'd take Defoe, the only natural born goalscorer England has, it may be his last season here, but he deserves it on the basis that he his probably the man you send on when you need a goal to scrape the group stage.

I'd go...

GK - Hart & Forster

Defenders - A.Cole, Cahill, G.Johnson, Jagielka, Baines, Huddlestone, Lescott, Shaw.

Midfield - Lampard, Gerrard, Sterling, Wilshere, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Milner, Townsend, Barkley

Forwards - Rooney, Defoe, Sturridge, Welbeck, Lambert.

england needs to build for the future if we have one , prem league is all most fans are intrested in , and the top players are manly foreign , we lack a striker at the top level , rooney in truth as he gets older seems to drop deeper , sturide good buisness by liverpool but he haS world class player at pool with suarez , england dont have that , wilshire out for at least six weeks so he prbably wont make the squad , but on the plus side evertons barkly is an unpolished diamond as probable as good as we have got in midfield , llalana and shaw did themselves good with their performance and hart is no 1 so cant understand why we did not use this game to see the back up keepers under pressure , and why have defoe on the bench and not use him , sterling is ok and townsend is quick and direct , but this seems to be the best we can do , alex is doing ok but he is not a world beater yet , and no forget terry his day has gone cahill is better and younger

FIFA rules of who plays are not flexible after a certain date when the squad names are submitted.

replacement players are not permitted after that date, with two goalkeepers any injury to one on

the field or in training could leave the squad without cover for the remainder of the tournament.

When I put Forster as third choice keeper it was because despite his record it is for keeping goal

for the best team in a one team country, I chose Foster as my second choice keeper because he

is keeping West Bromwich away from the drop zone in the Premiership with great performances.

On Wednesday on début I thought Shaw showed something new he was very impressive, Lallana

too showed a different approach to those who have represented England this season, he is still

improving on what he showed in good previous Wembley performances for England.

West Ham was known in the past as the English football academy, that mantle appears to have

passed to Southampton in recent years they are producing so many good English youngsters.

England won't be doing anything spectacular in the near - or distant future. Football fans know more about the best team to put out than most managers.

The majority of managers overthink the game. Really, its only about passing the ball to a fella in the same colour shirt as you, unlike Spurs players, they pass it to the other team as well.

The Academy is in full swing with teams of youngsters representing many age groups, a young lad I encouraged (trained) a few years or so ago has recently qualified from the elite squad via Bisham Abbey, near the end of last year there was a knock on my door, it was the young lad there to thank me for taking an interest when no one else was there to encourage him, he has his coaching certificates to accompany his football, recently he had an offer from an American University to work there. Bisham Abbey has now given way to the Burton-on-Trent complex.

Burton-on-Trent is used extensively by many groups with varying degrees of ability, it is on the school trip circuit which includes both boys and girls, some youngsters are late starters a day trip may be all that.s needed to kick start someone's career, a vast complex I think other sports take advantage of some of it's facilities.

thanks for the link , looks impressive and we will have to wait to see if it has any success on the pitch , but the here and now is not so bright , do young players have to much money to early in their carrers ? or is the coaching from an early age not up to the job? do we adopt the german way which seems at present to be succesful on and off the pitch , or the dutch way were young players seem to focus more on the technical side of the game ? are things changing or are we as a nation getting left further behind ? any coaches out there who can enlighten the uneducated amongst us?

I think the skills of the young players emerging will amaze many when honed into a working unit with the older players, those in contention includes Hart - Foster - Forster - Walker, Jagielka, Cahill, Johnson, Jones, Smalling, Shaw, Baines. Cole.- Lampard, Gerrard, Carrick, Lallana, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Townsend, Sterling.- Rooney, Sturridge, Welbeck, Lambert.

All we need is for Roy Hodgson to come up with a winning formula, I have seen all England home games for the past 2 years and Rooney has been brilliant, the guy never stops, he's always on the move however I was disappointed in the last game against Denmark where he was asked to play a part unfamiliar and too deep for him that mean't his performance wasn't it's normal polished product and from the manager's actions a failed experiment that must never be repeated, it's now time for the likes of Lallana, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Shaw and Rooney to be free to express themselves, the result may be an European team winning a tournament in South America for the first time.

Too frightened of losing to win.

That applies to a number of teams but I agree however in recent friendlies the new youngsters have done

their own thing and it is exciting, if tactics don't suppress that talent we could be pleasantly surprised.

Keep dreaming,Ivor.

I will be over the moon,if we get out the group.

The trouble is that the FA will continue to see fans as a cash cow for as long as people are willing to pay these ridiculous prices. There is no point in complaining about being ripped off, just don't buy the bloody things!

Ninety quid for a shirt? I would rather hammer my left hand to the kitchen table with a set of rusty nails than pay that kind of money.

Well World Cup around the corner do we see any surprises in the squad ? As Roy has come out and said he basically knows the squad , can't see Wiltshire or oxlaide chamberlain making the squad as both have been injured recently , hopefully llalana , shaw , Barkley will make the cut

Cashly out , hope he wasn't driving when he got the news ? Why do players always let out a statement that they retire from international football when dropped ? I think we all know when their time is up ? Typical cole release a statement on eve of squad announcement , not about him but that's Cashly cole

Well good result last night , Roy seems to be preparing the squad at the right level not long now to the real thing , Roy has seemed to brought the media frenzy down to the right level since he has been in charge , the right choice at the right time , thank god we didn't have traffic Harry and his dog in charge the media would have been in melt down

Bitter ,at that time he was probably and has been the right choice, would you rather have had ? Triffic Harry and his dog ? After his court apperance which made him look like a clown the fa were not going to appoint him , so your personal opinion about Roy gets in the way , he has given youth a chance which makes a change , can England push on after this World Cup ?

How hard can it be being England manager. It's not a difficult job. You pick the best English players available and put them into an 11 that suits them best, not what suits you, what suits them.

The hardest part of the job is dealing with the media criticism and the supporters knowing best!!!

I must be honest and say I've had little interest in Englands recent World cup campaigns .The sheer commercialism of it , the false expectations and the saga of should Forrest Gump be in the squad etc all took all my interest away and I ended up hoping that they would fail .I have very little interest in this one either BUT I think if Hodgson is left to pick the team he wants rather that pandering to commercial interests to please sponsors ( as was the case with McClaren when he was manager ) we might shock a few people . As Ramsey proved 11 good players don't make a great team , its all about working as a team . Greece proved this in the European championships as did Cloughie in club football .

We'll see soon -

I was at Wembley when we won the cup in 1966 (the ball WAS over the line), I've waited a long time for this chance to come around but we have the team to do it AGAIN.

My only concern is in defence, we need a TERRY type player to slot in between Cahill and Jagielka, we become exposed when our exciting wing backs go on the attack, open to the counter-attack. Baines is quick to get back but Johnson tends to switch off before returning to the defence.

I'm WIDE awake Dave and choose to ignore the stats geezers, in the England team Rooney is the play maker but after setting up the chances the guy who touches the ball last before it reaches the goal scorer is credited with an assist despite the brilliance of whoever the play maker may be to set it all up.

Despite St Darren - Roy Hodgson is our BEST manager since RAMSEY. He knows football having managed successfully on the continent and what some see as negative football is football played in the way to win tournaments, we will do well this time but Euro 2016 is ours.

FOOTBALL'S COMING HOME - ENGLAND (Enough to force Scotland to vote YES).

Dave, Not bad for a DREAMER, I posted this just over 2 months ago, without injuries they would all have been on the plane.

I think the skills of the young players emerging will amaze many when honed into a working unit with the older players, those in contention includes Hart - Foster - Forster - Walker (Injured), Jagielka, Cahill, Johnson, Jones, Smalling, Shaw, Baines. Cole (Season long Injury did for him) - Lampard, Gerrard, Carrick (Injured), Lallana, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Townsend (Injured), Sterling.- Rooney, Sturridge, Welbeck, Lambert.

I think we can say IVOR'S team selection will win the World Cup :yahoo:

If my bet comes up I'll buy you a drink, 19 grand should buy a few pints. (Fingers Crossed).

Best of luck with your bet bud.... I love bookie bashing....YAY!!!!!

Thanks for your good wishes, I've stuck another saver bet on so in a PERFECT world the returns would top 23 grand, it's giving them a chance to get some of their losses back whilst I am looking to cement my fortune in my old age. My family think I am mad when sat at the computer checking form etc I call it work but that is my retirement job, over the last five years I have averaged £420 a month in winnings from my work (hobby) tax free, unlike my pension.
