Bodmin Sports Trophies Duchy League Cup Final 2012-13

It finished Padstow United 1-0 St Merryn

Played in terrible conditions from start to finish! Rain coming in from the stand end towards the open end, sometimes at times sideways, with a very strong wind which meant that most of the pay was contained to one end!

It was perhaps a miracle that this game finished as the pitch began to resemble a paddy field as the contest wore on.

The deciding goal came in added on time in the first half with Padstow touching home from close range, but it was a game of very few shots as the conditions proved the winner!

Have to say that Padstow (Div 2) dealt better against the wind than their opponents from Div 5, and I would therefore suggest that is why they edged it for me.

Whether the match should have been played is another matter. Yes it got completed, but not much of a spectacle to win over any floating spectators who were watching as a one off.

With this one being p[played - makes you wonder why so many matches get called off hours, if not days, before the kick off time!

But credit to both sides - both deserved winners medals this evening :)

Padstow United 1-0 St Merryn HT 1-0 Goal scored following a corner, timed at 45+1.

Two pitch inspections at 2.00 and 4.00, both by match referee, it was agreed game could go ahead subject to no more rain and another inspection at 6.15.

Soon as match started, the heavens opened, then the wind came 15 mins in.

Well done to the officials for completing the game.

Bodmin Sports Trophies League Cup Final

Padstow United 1 St.Merryn 0

Over 340 spectators, certainly a modern day record for a Duchy final braved an horrendous night weather wise as Padstow edged their local rivals St.Merryn in the League Cup Final. After a day of incessant rain a pitch inspection at 15:45 identified that the ground was hard underneath foot and if the surface water was removed the game could go ahead. With a break in the weather forecast the Wadebridge grounds man with a little help from both clubs cleared the puddles and the pitch was certainly playable at kick off time.

With the crowds flocking in in ever increasing numbers a drizzle descended fifteen minutes before kick off, which then quick developed into heavy squally rain in a very strong wind. Unfortunately it ruined the match as a spectacle. Padstow with the wind at their backs in the first half eventually took the lead nearing half time with a Cameron Wickens goal. With conditions ever worsening in the second half St.Merryn did equalise, only to see a linesman’s flag rule the goal out for offside. Padstow possibly were unlucky not to get a penalty near the end, but they held on to their one goal advantage and picked up the trophy from Bodmin Sports Trophies Mike Chipman and Tracey Rundle.

Praise can only be given to the players of both sides who respected the referee’s decision to play-on and for their sportsmanship to each other. Both clubs were a great credit to the league and football in general.
