Launceston Cup Final Sunday 12th May

LC Phoenix 3 Altarnun 1

Launceston College Phoenix picked themselves up from Saturday's poor show against St Minver to claim the Launceston Cup. Unrecognisable from the day before, Phoenix looked sharp and committed throughout the park. Jon Bye opened the scoring for the alumni team with a goal from close range after early Phoenix pressure yielded a corner.

Altarnun, on a fantastic league run in Duchy 1 at the moment, responded later in the half with a well taken first time drive that served to remind Phoenix of the dangers they possessed in attack. Phoenix, however, weren't in the mood to surrender their well earned lead and responded with probably one of the best goals I've ever seen at a game of football; after some intricate passing and movement that opened up space on the right, Matt Brookes drifted past his marker and finished clinically. The goal came at the stroke of half time, and gave Phoenix a boost that carried them onwards throughout the second half.

Phoenix resisted Altarnun pressure in the second half and closed down players everywhere. Their third came courtesy of Luke Williams who, on his birthday, picked the ball up deep in the Altarnun half, drove past his marker, resisted a challenge from the keeper and kept a cool head to score from the tightest of angles. The goal sealed the victory for Phoenix. Altarnun will feel disappointed, but they played with spirit and kept Phoenix busy right up until the final whistle.

The White Hart Hotel Man of the Match Award: Darren Webber- a solid display at right back from the versatile Phoenix player.
