Guest Helston Patriot Posted August 28, 2007 Report Share Posted August 28, 2007 St Ives 2 v 4 Helston Helston scorers Dom Pullen 2 (20mins pen, 22 mins), OG 73 mins, Liam Eddy 90 mins. St Ives scored in 80 and 84 mins. Helston on top in 1st half but St Ives shaded second. St Ives tackles both on and off the ball left a lot to be desired and one or two were lucky to stay on the field. Helston still unbeaten and meet Perranwell in next match. Weeman Posted August 28, 2007 Report Share Posted August 28, 2007 Hayle 1-1 Culdrose True we did use 4 first team players tonight we had 3 players working 1 injured we started 3 one the goalkeeper and Matti Shiels came off the bench to score our goal was a very even game and draw was fair result although we were gutted to conceed in last 3 min its all senior football and on saturday if the first team are short they will take players from us thats the way it is as a second team one game you might gain a player next game you lose 2 swings roundabout last saturday we had 4 third team players. :P Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Guest Helston Patriot Posted August 29, 2007 Report Share Posted August 29, 2007 Match report (www.helstonafc.co.uk) St.Ives V Helston; Helston carry on scoring and winning at the Saltings Helston carry on their winning ways when they Travelled to St Ives and came away with a 4-2 victory. On a pitch that verged on unplayable due to the holes and uneven surface the first ten minutes saw Helston display continuous pressure on the St Ives defence without making the most of the chances created. The pitch took its toll after 11 minutes when Dave Celia's foot disappeared into a hole when competing for the ball and after being treated for five minutes was helped from the field to be replaced by Liam Eddy. St Ives had already begun the bad tackling and mouthing but Helston continued playing the football and were rewarded on 20 mins when the constant pressure forced the St Ives defence to concede a penalty when Nathan Radbone was brought down in the area. Dom Pullen did his usual job and put Helston one goal up. Within another two minutes the Blues had their second when Liam Eddy's cross from the right to the feet of Pullen, who dummied the 'keeper twice before lifting the ball over him into the net. The Helston players were still being brought down and it wasn't surprising that the home team received their first booking only a minute later. Helston were far quicker to the tackle and on the ball and were demonstrating on how to pass their way through the opposing team with a couple of these moves almost adding to their scoresheet. On 34 mins another free kick came Helston's way when Eddy was brought down just to the front left of the area. Nathan Radbone curled the free kick over the wall and saw it bounce off the bar and over. The next ten minutes saw St Ives coming more into the game and this resulted in some end to end football but no further scoring before half time. In the second half it was role reversal time when St Ives began as Helston did in the first half and began pushing the Blues defence too deep. St Ives were another team who employed the long ball game and met with some success and could even have pulled one back without some resolute defence. The closest they came to scoring was in the 67th minute when a long shot from the left was tipped over by the Blues keeper. On 73 minutes another free kick to Helston midway in their own half was launched towards the St Ives area where it bounced up and we saw a defender jump to back-head the ball over his keeper into the net for the third. Five minutes later another Helston free kick from the edge of the area was struck over the bar from Pullen. A minute later St Ives scored what was regarded as a consolation goal when a cross from the left was blocked but quickly put back into the area where a lurking forward mis-hit a shot which deceived the keeper who got a hand to it but pushed it just inside the post. When St Ives scored their second two minutes later from a free kick 40 yards out on the left which went over the keeper and under the bar into the net Helston looked a little worried but held tight against the St Ives onslaught. In the first minute of time added on a long free kick from Blake found its way to Eddy who carried the ball to the right of the six yard box before firing the ball past the goalkeeper into the net to give Helston a fourth. A minute or two later another break by Eddy should have possibly produced a fifth but his pass along the edge of the six yard box was just cut out and cleared away from the two waiting Helston players. With Helston on top in the first half and St Ives edging the second it was an interesting game but the organisation and commitment from Helston saw them through in the end. I watched most of the game at St. Ives last night, but missed the first 2 goals. I think your report is a little unfair in places, and makes Helston seem far better and deserving of the result than the opposition. You say "St Ives were another team who employed the long ball game...". No, not really. Helston were the superior team on the night for passing, control and distribution, but St. Ives did their fair share too. Not a long ball team. You say about the St. Ives first goal "..where a lurking forward mis-hit a shot which deceived the keeper......". No, not really, he kept his feet after 2 challenges and hit the ball on the turn. It didn't look like a mis-hit. You seem to have forgotten to mention the St. Ives effort that came back off the post following a superb long-range chip, and the chance that was virtually passed into the net, but just went wide of your right post (with everyone, including the keeper, stood watching it trickle past). And, I would have to say that the free kick awarded for a foul near the half-way line that resulted in the Helston 3rd goal was lucky to have been given. Looked like the ball was taken in the challenge. Still, an entertaining game with the right team winning based on the 70 minutes or so I watched.
