SPECTACLE FOR SUPPORTERS ENDS GOALLESS

MILL MARSH PARK was the place to be this Saturday afternoon for a game that provided lovely weather, great football, a female assistant, a sending off, but not goals.

Goals are not always needed in excellent spectacles of football as Bovey Tracey and Torpoint Athletic played out a 0-0 draw, which on another day could of been a score draw.

Torpoint did have two efforts in the net, one in either half, but both were ruled out for offside, as the Moorlanders wiped the sweat off their heads. Torpoint will certainly be aggrieved as the second was deep into second half injury time.

Bovey Manager Ryan German will be the happier of the two as he looked for a better display from his side in light of their recent defeat against Livetton United and that he did. Bovey provided an excellent defensive display to reduce not only the chances for Torpoint but also in their shape and organisation.

Bovey started the better of the two sides in the first 10 minutes as Jared Lewington caused problems for Liam Thornton down the right side of the field. Lack of attacking support meant Lewington's hard work came to nothing.

12 minutes it took before Torpoint came into the game, their first attack, a goal; or maybe not. Luke Avis-Riordan had the ball in the net after Paul Baker broke away with the ball from a Bovey corner. But the wingers positional sense just slightly ahead of the defence as the linesman raised his flag.

Star man for Torpoint, James Alexander was quality in his passing and awareness all game and had a couple of attempts to put Torpoint in the lead. The first from a cleared corner and his half volley not connecting well enough and the ball wide. The second a minute later was a free kick from 25 yards, centre of goal, this time hitting the target but not beating Tom Brooks.

Bovey had more chances half way into the game, but it was Liam Head who was the saviour this time. A free kick for Torpoint into the box was connected by Dave Lorimer but Head was on the post to head away.

The warm conditions began to affect the players fitness towards the end of the half. Defender Kai Fisher lost the ball in the Bovey defence giving Paul Baker a chance but he was unable to find Darren Hicks.

Alexander continued his quality going forward as Torpoint came out more determined. His through ball on 48 found Thornton's magnificent run from the back but Ryan Stanbridge was on hand to stop a shot at Brooks. Both 'keepers performed well in the second half as more shots on target were on show.

Both sides, certainly looking for the first goal, made changes after 60 minutes. German also changing tactics.

Joint-Manager of Torpoint Karl Curtis, began the game at right back and he was booked by referee Reed on 66 for a pull on Dale O'Donaghue. Liam Head's free kick swung in towards the back post and cleared out by the Torpoint defence.

More changes were made with 20 minutes left. O'Donaghue had 3 attempts in a row to get on the scoresheet but all chances saved at Borthwick's near post.

Dave Lorimer was booked minutes from the end for Torpoint but Reed wasn't finished. A minute from time, Jared Lewington collided with substitute Josh Fenwick as he went to win the ball and was booked for not winning the ball to the anger of Lewington. His reaction forced a straight red from Reed for foul and abusive language.

Bovey were disappointed about the circumstances of the sending off which affected their defensive duty of clearing the free kick as Shane White's flick on found a free Torpoint player at the back post to head in. But again this was ruled out offside.

Despite a manic end to a great game of football, Torpoint extend their run to 8 games whilst Bovey begin a new unbeaten run to continue to the end of the season.
