Guest cescfab_4
St Austell 2-0 Torpoint Athletic As we (Torpoint) reservsed the fixture to get the game played we travelled to St Austell. On a very soft pitch it was a credit to both teams for some of the football played. We were exceptional first half with attack after attack on the Sts defence. 17 year old Laurence Murray dectiated the tempo in the middle of the park linking well with Lewis Pacey. Austell defended very well in number and we were unable to break them down. Skipper Graham O'Neill had the attempt of the half with a very well struck shot that brushed the post. The second half started very much of the same. However with 55 gone St Austell started to turn the screw. Some poor defensive play lead to a Austell goal from a cross tha was parried by keeper Tom McHale. The goal hit us badly as we found it hard to hold onto the ball for the 5 minutes afterwards. Once we settle back into our game O'Neill crossed for Tom Smith for Smith to header in. However it seemed that he just crept into a offside position. As we continued to apply pressure our hard work was rewarded with a penalty. However Pacey couldn't manage to find the net with a well struck strike that hit the bar. With the game coming to a close we were always going to be vunrable to a counter attack. This proved the case as we conceded in the last 2 minutes. Overall I fully believe that we deserved something from the game for the football we played. St Austell experienced showed through and the quality to win a game when they are not firing is something that we need to learn. Thank you again from all the boys for the food after the game and good luck for the rest of the competition. Knighter
First of all, thanks very much to Torpoint, and particularly their manager for switching the fixture, I know that nearly every other side in the county would have refused it but it's credit to the belief you have in your young side and I have to say it is thoroughly justified. For such a young group I have been very very impressed both times I have seen you, in fact I would say on both occasions for large parts of the game you have been the better team, for an hour on Saturday that was certainly the case. Saying that, for the last 30 minutes my side were brilliant, having stayed in the game up until then experience took over and I wouldn't swap my players for anyones. I'm sure Torpoint will have a big say in the title race also, i know you still have to play a number of the top sides, and I'm sure you will take points off them. Good luck for the rest of the season. Onto the area final against Bude who I have never seen play but all reports indicate they are very strong, one again we will be up against it, but we'll have a good go! Come on Town! Guest cescfab_4
A very fair reflection Chris. The experience to hang on in there when under pressure and still come out on top is something that we need to develop. It'll take time with such a young group of lads. I fully agree that we will have a say in the title race. It may be a little too far for us but on our day we can certainly beat anyone in the league. Good luck to you also. As mentioned on Saturday, Bude are very much the unknown. They must have a lot of quality to reach the final. Sure I'll be there to watch. St Austell to win for Duchy football!!
