Games Cancelled 26th January

Recommended Posts

Just a poitn to stress - games need to be called off by a referee. I'm not stating this to case arguements, but with the back log of fixtures mounting up, a game might in fact be deemed playable by a referee.

Obviously there are exceptions to this..... Hope you all play :-)

With refernce to your post, which Ref is meant to call the game off? the one that is meant to be reffing the game? for example our Ref on Sat is from St. Austell so do we need to get him to come all the way down to us to inspect the pitch at say 11am? or can you just ring an ref to inspect the pitch on your behalf? thanks

For reference - when a referee is appointed to a match, their responsibility is for that game only and sadly not what the pitch will be like after the game.

As long as the pitch is deemed safe for players, playable from a field perspective and the game weather forecast ok, the game should go ahead.

It does raise a bone of contention with clubs - YES - but that is the remit of the referee. Games are called off to preserve the pitch when actually they should be played.

A pitch does not have to be inspected by the match referee, but by a qualified active referee. Depending on which level of football you play at a certain level of referee maybe required. I am not sure if a referee affiliated to a club can perform the inspection as they could be biased towards the state of the pitch for future weeks.

Daft rule at this level needs changing. Should be a decision made by the Chairman of the club. Asking people to travel at thier own cost to inspect a pitch at junior level is taking it too far. Everyone wants to play, we can't control the weather and the reality is that even in the wettest year on record we still get the games played. So it will be a busy March/April/May. We managed to get on our pitch this week and spike it but I don't think we rolled it due to it still being too wet to pull the roller. Pitch is in the worst state its been in for 6 years and we have a groundsman! Got rivers running down the roads in the village at the moment.

you can just get a local referee do to the pitch inspection

Correct Shane, what should happen is the referee who does the inspection cannot call off the game, the only person who can call off the game is the appointed match official ( and before you all start we know that council pitches etc are called off by the council ), the referee who inspects the pitch should call the appointed referee and give him his opinion and hopefully arrive at the decision to call off the game.

To be fair, and as mentioned above, I don't think anyone could have predicted we'd be in this position weather wise come the end of January.. it has been really nice weather here in the Capital of the Earth for the last few days, but today it's absolutely ghastly. And it's done that for the last 5 or 6 weekends.

Every single one of us is itching to play come this time on a Friday, and I'm sure we'd even all play in utter mud baths. as I'm sure there will be some of them tomorrow. But if we ruin the pitches now, we're all gonna be complaining even more when games are getting called off in March when it's bone dry but a pitch hasn't recovered (and Gerald is having palpitations at his fixture computer)

Ben - it is definately a no win situation and it is going to be a long hard end to the season for everyone.......

Agreed, but aside from taking very drastic action (cancellation of cup competitions or removing league fixtures for every team in every division), we must all try be patient, and grin and bear it.

As players and referees, we are somewhat at the luxury of only having to turn up on a Saturday and hopefully enjoy our 90 minutes out there, be it rain, wind or shine. But for those behind the scenes, groundsmen, secretaries etc, seeing a pitch be turned into something resembling a Scottish Highland cow field must be an utter nightmare. And without these people, we don't play at all, be it a sunny evening in September, or a snowy mid-December afternoon in the wilds of Pendeen (true story that one)

Sometimes the refs get it wrong too! We had a game last season when the ref said we are all here so lets play...after game when the pitch was cut 2 pieces & we could not play on it four weeks, the ref turned around & said prob should not off played that game really....2 say I spoke my mind was an understatement!

Club no there own pitch & what will happen etc.. Not refs from else were!

Well the way we have always done it is inspect the pitch at 9 am if not fit to play game off. sometimes i call it off friday night after an inspection if the pitch is bad and weather forecast is not great... at the end of the day id rather know on a friday night as being self employed i can then earn a days pay rather then wasting a morning waiting for the game to be canceled at 11am and the day has gone. Ive never been a ref and never seen a ref do a pitch inspection with me and in the last 17 years of palying in the duchy league never heard of it... so if teams play on a council pitch and the council pull the plug on a friday how does that work without a ref calling it?

And what is the chance of the game being on tomorrow Denty?? we managed to play St Mawgan last weekend 1st game in 8 weeks for us!

Hope to see you tomorrow down at St Newlyn

Cheers Ernie

Anybody know how St Just's pitch is looking?

St Just pitch usually drains pretty well but need the rain to ease if have any chance of playing. Both sides were away last week so may have helped the pitch recover abit.

Thanks mate. Haven't played in what seems like forever.

I'm sorry guys but unless their is surface water on the pitch and your foot is ankle deep in mud it would be foolish to cancel a fixture. I think the days of protecting pitches this season to harbour that pristine look has well and truly bolted and we are only just shutting the stable door!!! (Rubbish metaphor sorry!). It's a nightmare to play in poor conditions on a heavy pitch and can be a major leveller for the better sides however if clubs continue to cancel touch and go fixtures to protect a pitch you will be on a hiding to nothing come the evening fixtures in April however much we would all like that true pitch that harbours no furrows, bumps or long grass we unfortunatley but also luckily live in wet and tropical Cornwall

Don't get me wrong if a pitch is unplayable it must be cancelled but I think it's getting to the point where a little bit of "can do" attitude may need to be undertaken to get the fixture list moving in the right direction.

not sure if honest, 4 pitches up there 2 of which are waterlogged and the other 2 borderline. hopefully the lack of rain this morning will allow it to be on for both games

only prob with this is dishonest teams mate iv bin involved where a teams had its star player or a couple players missing so they've said water logged pitches just so we would play on a date when that player is avl but i agree with u on the arguement that clubs shud decide as if im not mistaken if u was to say pitch is playable n the ref then gets there n calls it unplayable the club still has to pay the ref. am i right here cornish ref maybe u can answer this for me as im not 100% sure

Pensilva v Polperro Duchy 1 Off.

Shame because I was looking forward to it, must've been really bad there because I heard that St Cleer's game was on today.

Looking like at least twice a week games through April and May now. Only halfway through our league fixtures and going into February, and we've played the most games in Div 1 before today bar Gunnislake. There are some who've played 3 & 4 less than us, that's going to be some run in!
