Only 6 this year (Sturge gone to the Gooners) but is a clear sign that the Newquay AFC youth policy is still the best in the county. They are not all defenders, just listed first. I have given the positions as I recall them.

Good luck to all the Cornish lads v Devon today... still have to question why such a big local game could not be played on Sunday, giving fans of the parent clubs a chance to watch the U18's and their own sides.

Sam Trudgian GK

Sam Hill Defender

Cameron Bidgood Midfield

Jacob Street Utility

Jack Bray-Evans Utility

Alex Cole Defender

SWCC Youth

Cornwall 1 (George), Devon 0

A goal on the half hour from Callum George was enough for all 3 points in this opening group match at a sunny Bodieve Park. However all the county's hard work would have been wasted, but for a brilliant stoppage time save from Sam Trudgian when he tipped a Liam Gregory header onto the cross-bar.

Devon started the match the brighter with Richard Edworthy going wide and Josh Loxon not making the most when he broke away before minutes later forcing Trudgian to make a great diving save. Cornwall rallied with Jack Bray-Evans shooting wide from a quick free-kick, trying to catch the Devon ‘keeper Dan Law off his line.

Another free-kick, this time from Ryan Chinn was flicked on by skipper Sam Hill but lacked any power to trouble, but soon after Cornwall got what proved to be the vital breakthrough with some cool finishing from striker Callum George after Devon paid the penalty for not clearing their box. A loose ball fell to Josh Burton who’s shot was blocked but the ball dropped nicely to George who made no mistake from just inside the penalty area.

The second half started with Cornwall taking the game to their cross-border opponents. Law saved to prevent George getting his second, but when firstly the county’s No 9 knocked a very good chance wide of the Devon goal, and then Edworthy blocked a certain goal-bound shot, again from George, the slender one goal lead began to look vulnerable.

Cornwall’s back four of Bray-Evans, Chris Sturgess, Hill and Kyle Frazer remained solid though against the ever increasing long ball down the middle from Devon, and with that brilliant late, late save from Trudgian, the boys from the Duchy began their campaign with maximum points.

Great pictures Dave. I'm sure Tommy will give his view of the game at some point but for what it's worth I thought all of our young men put in an outstanding effort and came together as a team to produce some quality football. I'm really looking forward to our trip to Kent in 2 weeks time and know our lads will show the fellas "up country" what we're made of!

Well done to Tommy and the boys!!! Great result! Always nice to put one over Devon. Yeh agree Sam it was always nice to go away with the county or the fa cup or vase and come back over the bridge with a win or good result. They think we got straw hanging out our mouth some of them!! Always enjoyed seeing the shock on their faces when they realised we could actually play!!! Good days eh Tom!? Glad you're still doing the county proud mate! x

Not a spectacle mainly due to what I felt was a bobbly pitch and a fussy ref but Cornwall ran out comfortable winners.

Bennetts, Chinn and Frazer all made good solid contributions in their first starts for Cornwall U18s.

Good luck lads in the County Youth Cup against Kent FA Saturday week.
