Ian Pethick
Parkway 1 Gillingham Town 2 (HT 0-0) ( Parkway scorer , Warren Daw) Superb cup ( or Vase) tie on a warm, sunny afternoon in front of a small crowd . Good football played by both sides in a first half that somehow remained goalless , Parkway especially being to the fore and picking up where they left off against Chard last week with Lance Bailey and Mark Berry in particular standing out . Sam Cooper came the closet to scoring when he saw his effort come back off the bar , although Gillingham also nearly broke the deadlock when putting wide with Gary Penhaligon expecting to see the net bulge behind him . The second half started off in similar vein , Warren Daw and Bailey both should have taken good chances before Parkway were caught with two sucker punches in the 48th and 52nd minutes . The first being rammed home after a free kick was not cleared and then a penalty being converted following a Will Stringer foul . Gillingham probably should have had a couple more as Parkway got caught on the break as an inevitable result of piling numbers forward . Warren Daw drove an angled shot home in the 75 minute as a result of the pressure that also saw Cooper hit the bar again and both Berry and Daw have efforts brilliantly saved . Gillingham held on for a worthy win to inflict Parkway's first defeat of the season .
