Penzance Reserves 3-2 Troon

This was three hard earned points for The Magpies in their fight to keep their Combination League status but the result finished much closer than it should have as Penzance gave away a silly goal from a short back pass in the closing few seconds. Penzance gave a run out to a couple of first team regulars which helped to strengthen their back four and midfield.

The first half is fairly quiet as far as goalmouth chances go. Penzance break left, the ball is laid back to Tom Putterill who fires past the near post. Troon then work the ball down their right, square the ball but the resulting shot is wide. Another Troon break ends in Penzance keeper Scott Halli8day grabbing the ball out of the air.

Penzance finish the half the stronger of the two sides following three chances. From a throw on the right the ball is knocked to the back of the box to Harry Corin who heads wide, another header from Putterill goes wide before Corin heads over the bar following a corner on the left.

H-T

Troon go in front against the run of play in the 50min. A free kick, by Ashley Smeeth, on the edge of the box is fired in low beating the keeper’s outstretched arm.

Seven minutes later the game is all square again following a long ball into the box, a turn and volley which the Troon keeper parries but only to Corin who has the task of firing in from 6yds. A few moments later another Penzance shot in the box forces the keeper to make an excellent save at his post.

On the hour mark Penzance go 2-1 up after working the ball right to left in the middle of the park, breaking to cross and volley forcing the keeper to give away a corner. The ball comes over, volley, saved, then a Bradley Wills finds its way into the back of the net from 12yds.

16mins are left when Penzance are awarded a penalty when Lewis Caspall is pulled down inside the box. Wills steps up scoring to the keeper’s right to make it 3-1.

With seconds to go Smeeth gets a second for Troon when he pounces on a poor back pass rounds the keeper on the edge of the box and taps the ball into an empty net.

St Agnes 5-0 Penzance Reserves

The wind was so cold at Enys Park it was making the eyes water, the crowd looking as if they were crying. The strong wind had a huge influence on the game helping the Magpies to go in at half-time with their goal intact, but assisting Aggie to score five in the second, four from Man of the Match, Duane Britton. Both sides had quite a few youngsters playing which is always good to see.

Penzance kick-off and are quickly on the back foot as Aggie break left to right. The ball is kicked out of the keeper’s hands but it goes over the bar. A St Agnes corner on the right is knocked over resulting in a low shot being cleared off the line.

Another home corner on the left is knocked in low to the near post and in the resulting knockabout involving 18 players the ball is somehow cleared up-field. Another corner results in a free header skimming over the bar.

Aggie break on their right, the ball comes over; a free header is palmed away by Penzance keeper, Scott Halliday. A speculative shot from Scott Spear towards the Penzance goal is left by everyone thinking it is going well wide but the wind grabs it and curls it onto the top of the far upright.

H-T

From the kick-off St Agnes get a free-kick. It is fired into the box bounces off the bottom of the post, out to a forward who shoots from 3yds but Halliday bravely leaps and smothers it.

Three minutes into the half and in pops the first goal. St Agnes break left, square to Britton who shoots, the keeper palms it out but Britton follows up and belts the ball past Halliday, low from 6yds out.

Penzance break down the middle, shoot but the ball helped by the wind hits the bottom of the post, runs along the goal line, round the far post and then out for a goal kick.

Down the other end go Aggie, through the middle with Spear whose shot is wickedly deflected past the keeper to make it 2-0 after 53mins.

From then on it is all one way traffic with Britton netting three more goals. Before then though, much travelled Rikki Smith misses a sitter at the back post for Aggie firing over the bar from 6yds out.

66mins on the clock when Penzance lose the ball to Britton in midfield. He runs forward one on one with the keeper and scores low from 15yds.

4mins later a long wind assisted ball bounces over the defence allowing Britton to scarper through to score from 15yds to make it 4-0.

The Aggie keeper has to make a double save, one at each post during a rare Magpies foray into their opponents half.

87mins on the clock and its 5-0 after another long ball allows Britton to run on and score. From the kick-off the ref blows his whistle calling the game off a couple of minutes early allowing us all to get indoors for some warmth.

St Day 1-1 Penzance Reserves

Penzance grabbed a quick well worked goal, defended well, saw a rather lucky goal scored against them and then defended in numbers to hold onto a precious point. With team Captain Dean Mooney back after a month out due to a foot injury the defence man-marked danger-man Shane Richards out of the game but couldn’t cope with St Day’s new signing from Hayle, Danny Ford as he kept dropping deep to start attacks and the Magpies weren’t prepared to chase and waited for St Day to come at them. The pitch was looking good apart from a small muddy patch in the bottom goal mouth which was defended by St Day’s other new signing Ryan Gendall.

Penzance kick-off towards the clubhouse and give away a free-kick on the edge of the box for hand-ball. The ball is blasted into the wall. The game is around and in the Penzance penalty area until a long relieving kick finds Saul Pankhurst breaking down the Penzance right. He squares the ball to Harry Corin who turns and volleys past Gendall, from 12yds to make it 0-1 after 6mins. A stunned silence descends over The Vougue, as not even your correspondent expected the goal.

St Day then spent the rest of the game throwing everything at the Penzance back line. Tiffer on the touchline goes grey as keeper Scott Halliday keeps frightening everyone by spilling the ball (2nd half a safe pair of hands) every time he tried to grab it. The noise and naughty word level increased from the St Day bench, the ref was continually berated for each decision that went against the men in yellow and black. The shots became hurried and wild.

From a corner on the left the ball is knocked over and out. It is volleyed in but is so strong and being under pressure from Lee Gribble, Halliday can only palm it onto the bar. The ball drops down and gets the slightest of deflections off Gribble, whose momentum has carried him behind the keeper and the ball goes into the net from all of 2yds to make it 1-1 after 43mins.

H-T

During the second 45mins Penzance probably have 5mins possession, the rest. St Day. Penzance get the first chance with a couple of seconds when they break into the box, play the ball around before Corin fires into the side netting from an acute angle.

The rest of the half matches the first, the language from the sidelines gets fruitier and more frantic, the shooting wilder, the defending deeper and deeper, and the hair gets greyer!

Halliday makes some great blocks, palm-aways; James Street, Ed Wilkes, Mooney and Sam Clough keep the back line solid.

Richards gets in a cross goal header, Ford a low shot but apart from that .....

The minute hand is almost stationary no matter how much time is wasted but eventually the ref signals the end of the game and Penzance gain their first away point of the season.
