Newquay 1 Foxhole 0

Saturday 28th January 2012

Glen Squires' 81st minute winner denied the magnificent Foxes the point that was the absolute minimum they deserved after a fantastic performance against the champions-elect. Seizing on to fellow substitute Westgarth's mis-hit shot, Squires tapped home from a yard after edging ahead of Adam Holland who, along with debutant defensive partner Olly Morrison, were comfortably the best players on the Mount Wise pitch. Other than a brief period midway through the second half when Newquay were finally able to exert some pressure Foxhole matched their high-profile opponents in all departments but were left to rue a succession of missed opportunities which fell to the effervescent Griffin.

Griffin almost gave the Foxes a shock advantage within two minutes after gathering Faircloth's pass up the line to turn inside Hollow and firing in a dipping drive which Crane tipped over. Butler's chip from thirty yards soon after flew just over while the Peppermints were to offer little in the final third save for Reski's thunderous effort from distance which crashed against the post, Ludlam's free-kick which flashed narrowly wide and the odd dangerous cross from Farrant, whose delivery into the box generally did not match the quality of his exciting play at outside-right. Displaying his continued avowed commitment to the cause, the ebullient Griffin frequently spread panic with his strong running and robust challenging for every ball, his early caution following no more than a mild tussle with Ludlam perhaps inevitable in the current climate. Shortly after home assistant manager Lafferty had been asked to vacate his place in the dug out by Mr Stevens for dissent, Griffin inadvertently prevented Adam Holland from opening the scoring, the visiting skipper's netbound header from the impressive Trudgian's floated dead-ball rebounding off the marine's shoulder to Gotthardt, whose effort was scrambled from the line by Hollow. Butler's attempt to catch Crane off guard only narrowly failed before the final action of the half saw Griffin embarrass Arscott only to fire against the legs of the keeper.

Knowing that their resolute approach and enterprising play had more than warranted a lead Foxhole soon threatened to make the breakthrough on the restart, Griffin again going close with a lob after capitalising on more hesitant defending from the nervous-looking home rearguard before firing over from a poor angle with Butler in a better position. However, with Farrant continuing to trouble left-back Thomas with his skill and pace Newquay at last began to press, but with Morrison nullifying any semblance of threat from Robertson and the excellent Stone having tucked Weldhen deep inside his pocket from the first whistle, Ryan Holland was only required to dirty his jersey once when displaying admirable awareness to field from the fairly nondescript Reski.

Alas within twelve minutes of their arrival Westgarth and Squires had combined fortuitously to end Foxhole's brave resistance. By then midfielder Spaul, having outshone the likes of Hampshire with his intelligent short passing and lung-busting runs forward, had been booked for an alleged word out of turn, and the Foxes' disciplinary woes were to be almost immediately exacerbated with Griffin's second yellow which mystified even the home faithful and Trudgian's caution following a challenge on Ludlam for which the term innocuous barely does justice. With nothing to lose, Mackellar ordered his charges to go gung ho in their search for an equaliser, which Stone nearly provided with a drive which almost deceived Crane, who was then required to smother from Morrison, but it just wasn't to be.

Foxhole (5-3-2): Ryan Holland 7; Richard Faircloth 8 (sub. Ross Turton 84 mins), Ben Thomas 8, Adam Holland 9, Joe Stone 9, Oliver Morrison 9; Jaydon Gotthardt 8, Ben Spaul 9, Adam Trudgian 9; Andrew Butler 8, Richard Griffin 8.

Newquay (3-5-2): Joe Crane; Dave Hollow, Dave Trott, Mike Arscott; Sam Farrant, Jon Ludlam, Lewis Hilton, Chris Reski, Paul Hampshire; Luke Weldhen (sub. Glen Squires 69 mins), Paul Robertson (sub. Andy Westgarth 69 mins).

Referee: Mr Chris Stevens (Fowey).

This referee is simply not good enough to be refereeing at this standard. Constant poor performances and bad reviews.

I am all for the respect campaign, but this referee should respect us and drop down a couple of levels !!!!!!!!!

A deserved mention after watching this game was midfielder Ben Spaul. He has impressed myself and many other opposition managers this season with his keep ball approach. For any premier league side Spaul would be a great addition who gives 100% every game.

Bolly 18 are you Ben spaul Hahah he did play well tho. Good game saturday. One or two more signings for newquay and they will do well in the Prem. Also Olly new signing was quality one for the future defo. And butler added quality to the team that was duely needed.

Olly Morrison did have a good game, shame he has left Newquay though, been with them since he was 10 I think, not sure why he left?

Lewis Hilton is the only player in the 1st team at Newquay from the youth. I wonder if we will see more in the near future they must have some young talent coming through. Isn't there 5 in the Cornwall U18s squad?

Ollie is still the Newquay AFC U18's Captain, he joined Foxhole to gain some SWPL experience as opportunities this season have been limited. Both Sam Trudgian and Chris Sturgess are U18's and have been in the SWPL squad recently. Jack Bray-Evans has also made appearances in the 1st team.

All players are given a chance to move up when appropriate for them and the club, we don't have over 500 young players registered for nothing.

But less than 1% have made the step up ?

Yes, we thought about putting the Under 5's in the SWPL squad but for some reason, The FA wouldn't play ball. So we then thought perhaps they were a tad young, maybe the U9's or even the U12's or U16's, but those stick in the muds at Wembley still said no !

In the real world, we have an U18's side, The Reserves and then the SWPL side, a natural progression rather than chucking youngsters straight into the deep end. If you or others don't like the way we are trying to do things, then perhaps you should take a look at your own clubs policies before having a pop at ours.

I apologise if you thought I was having a pop, I really wasn't. Was genuinely wondering if there was any other youngsters other than Hilton that might get a chance. You answered my question in your previous post. I'm assuming Hilton has had a bit of experience at playing at a good level? He seems to be a mature player and fits in well.

No need to apologise Soccerfan, my comments were aimed at Druth1966 for his less than 1% remark.

Yes, we fully expect our youth policy to bear fruit but possibly more in the medium to long term as it has only been in place 4 years. Danny Carne has now played SWPL for Newquay and BSQS for Truro City, proof that there is talent coming through the Mount Wise ranks.

I don't support any one club just have a keen interest in football. In fact I was at Newquay last night having a beer and listening to the guest speaker by Mr Wilkins!

I thought Newquay had a 3rd and 4th team too........ :D

You're right Anita, Newquay do have a 3rd and 4th team too. Majority of those players are 16,17 or 18 years old.
