Cornish Exile Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 I hope this is not too contentious to start but can anyone explain why the proposed stadium is going to Truro City? It is a genuine question but I do not see any answers anywhere. Why is public money going to a single team - that is also a private company? I know clearly Truro have risen to near the top of the regional leagues now but they've shown there is nothing to stop any Cornish club with a bit of cash behind them rising a few steps. I'm just not clear on where the democracy is here. I attended a game at Truro on visiting family recently and there would only have been a couple of hundred there. Surely that will be ridiculous in a big new stadium designed for 10 or 12,000. And its not to say a good Cornish derby game would not attract a bigger gate than Truro would get in the Conference South. Unlike many Falmouth fans I guess my years away from the county have taken away the animosity towards our near rivals. But if Falmouth or any other Cornish team got a few promotions and had a bit more money behind them - then would they also be able to sell their ground and rent the stadium. I'm a keen rugby fan and know only too well that Dickie Evans is putting serious cash into the project but for all the will in the world it seems unlikely that Truro City can do the same. Therefore if it just relates to how many tickets a club can sell so as to afford a rent to pay then surely this "opportunity" should be available to all clubs and not just Truro. Or am I missing something and Truro City have indeed some special case here? Many thanks
somersetspur Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 Dont know what you are going on about. I thought Truro City were only going to pay rent. Not own the Stadium. It will be a Cornwall Stadium, for all sorts of events.
MOUNTAINEER Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 Without the Truro City input there may not be a Stadium for Cornwall, the Pirates and the Council would not have the finance to go forward, finance is required from three parties, it looks as if they will be equally involved, Mr Heaney has his plans for Truro's part of the bargain, apparently those could become a reality sooner rather than later, many projects in this country are taking a little longer to get off the ground than it was hoped for, the recession has dictated that. When other attractions apart from Rugby and Football become part of the Stadium for Cornwall scene people opposed to the stadium could change their minds, progress has been slow for too long in the far west, a Stadium could bring Cornwall into the 21st century after-all, this week the masses are congratulating St Austell for their great achievement, the installation of floodlights at the same time many of those offering their praises continue to regret Truro City Football Clubs progress to Step 2 of the non league footballing ladder. It is alright to say anyone with money could achieve what Truro have achieved, money alone does not guarantee success, people make that happen. I posted many times my opposition to Truro City moving into a Stadium for Cornwall because I think the crowds could feel lost in it, hopefully people will flock to it like they did for the New Wembley, like what they see and return again and again, years ago Truro were saved by Mr Heaney's cash now the plan for funding a Truro City move to the Stadium for Cornwall appears to be the only way forward for a club competing at one of the higher levels of football. If what has been suggested to me is true (rumour) Truro City's rent for the Stadium would be in place for many years, that would take a great burden off the football club who would then need to operate like any Semi/full time professional club on a sound commercial basis relying on sponsorship, admission etc. Last Saturday at Bromley I was pleased to shake Mr Heaney's hand and thank him for what he did for Truro football last week. I must add that I congratulate Money Man & Co at St Austell for what they have achieved because like most of the teams we have all supported they have experienced hard times, I was not having a dig, just an example to show how difficult it is to progress.
cornishman64 Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 the stadium 4 cornwall is to be shared for football and ruby???????????????

Mr T, I think you will need to find the posting(s) you are referring to, I have NOT ATTACKED MR HEANEY here or elsewhere, in fact on Saturday at Bromley I stood talking to Mr Heaney, I would hardly be doing that if I were slagging him off, on any forums the Cornish Soccer Forum anti Truro brigade have on occasions asked if' 'I were Mr Heaney in disguise'. The ONLY thing I have been against is the Stadium for Cornwall, in that respect I have posted that I thought a 6000 max stadium in Truro would be big enough in line with what I was told came under the duties of the Trustees, I still think it will be expensive for both the Pirates and Truro City but now the Tax has been paid Truro City can go forward. From uncertainty things are clearer, Mr Heaney has confirmed that Football League status is still the goal, that will take time to achieve (if ever), from our present position onwards the road is long with no guarantees of reaching our destination. OK so I now see the Stadium for Cornwall in a different light, circumstances have determined that I look at it from the viewpoint of Mr Heaney and how Truro City's advancement is funded, as I understand it payment of Truro City's rent would be secure for many years, Mr Heaney deserves our support, I would still prefer a 6000 stadium but realise that for Truro City to go forward a Stadium for Cornwall has to be the way. I hope that when YOU FAIL TO FIND my postings slating Mr Heaney you will be man enough to say SORRY.
Martin Eddy Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 no problem at all with a stadium for cornwall but!cannot get my head around the facts and figures. last saturday exeter chiefs reached the semi final of a european cup competition in front of 8000 fans, they are in the premiership of rugby, their stadium is right beside the motorway and they are doing very well in the league.pirates are doing well in their league and truro city are holding their own(doing well).but the crowds are just not there how can they justify either team playing in a big empty stadium, you only have to look at darlington to see into the future. i really hope i am wrong

My only objection is this pie in the sky "Stadium for Cornwall" with any use of tax payers money and seemingly without any real regard for the wishes of the majority in Cornwall regarding site. Where is the Stadium for Devon/Middlesex/Yorkshire etc? The name is just a hook.

I never say sorry to anyone, but i can't believe you are happy to see Treyew Road sold off,Truro City's HOME. You did accuse me of something I DID NOT DO. I did not slate Mr Heaney, I have always stated Mr Heaney loves Truro City Football Club, many of those who oppose Mr Heaney at Truro accept that, even though they may disagree with his methods at times. I did not say I was HAPPY to see Treyew Road sold off, that WAS DONE in the South Western League days, the Trustee issue leaves us where? who knows that is farcical, it is unfortunate that the only way Truro City can survive to finance football at the level they are now and maybe at a higher level, is to develop Treyew Road to finance the club from the money generated from it's development in the future. Weighing up all the options Mr Heaney's way appears to be the only way, unless Truro City fans are happy to go back to compete for the next 123 years against Small Town and Village teams from within Cornwall's boundaries, as with all sports organisations at this time, funding is a concern but if Truro's rental burden is lifted because of the Treyew Road development income those concerns should be eased. If you don't say sorry to anyone then you shouldn't make untruthful statements in the first place but it takes a man to admit when he is wrong. I still think YOU SHOULD APOLOGISE.
