Polperro 2 Foxhole 1

Not much time to write a report tonight, as not long been back and off out to a friends party shortly.

The wind today played a massive part in todays game. It was difficult to stand up in the lower half of the pitch, let alone kick a ball.

Foxhole were without Nobby at the back today and maybe missed his presence but Foxhole scored in 1st half a Tom Grylls left foot strike placed into the right corner of the Polperro net.

2nd half foxhole battled hard against the wind and got the ball out of there half when they could.

Polperro scored there 1st half way through the 2nd half scored from a similar position as foxholes 1st half goal. The game looked like a draw until Polperro were awarded a free kick on the each of the box with about 15 to go. The ball was struck well until the roof of the net left side.

Foxhole played some half decent football in the final 15mins. On came Rob Giltjes for Jamie Killen. Rob made an instant impact up front. Rob had a decent shot from just outside of the box with the ball heading ball bound, it was clearly handballed. Ref did nt see the hand ball, so no pen was given.

Final score 2-1 to Polperro, maybe a draw would of been a fairer result, but sometimes thing just don’t go your way, thats football and you just got to take some bad luck sometimes, just like when the good luck comes along.

Polperro are a well organised club and nice bunch of lads. Good luck to Spencer and the team for the rest of the year.

PROPER CORNISH FOXHOLE MAN OF THE MATCH – Josh Harvey, Josh went along way today to stake a claim on Foxholes Midfield. Today his playmaking and workrate was at its best.

Special mention also to Sam Leaney who played at CB today as we were missing Nobby due to injury. Sam played with 110% heart and passion in his belly for our team and club. You could ask Sam to play any position and you know Sam will do a fantastic job in them all.

DONKEY OF THE MATCH Tom Grylls for ducking a flying ball, instead of taken one in the face.

St. Columb Major 3 - 0 Grampound

St. Columb overcame second placed Grampound with a relatively straight forward victory after two early goals ensured that Major would not be troubled after losing leading scorer Dom Roberts to a straight red card on the hour.

Grampound made a positive start to the match, crowding the midfield with energy, preventing the league leaders from settling into any sort of rhythm. The visitors forced an early corner and should really have opened the scoring as a free header flashed wide of the target and it almost got worse for Grampound as some smart work on the right resulted in a low pass into the box from David Rabone that eluded everybody and fell to the feet of Marco Ciarleglio who fired straight at the goalkeeper from close range. Grampound failed to heed the warning as Rabone found himself in an identical position just a minute later after a quick Ali Bicknell throw-in, volleying a low pass across the face of goal that fell invitingly for Dom Roberts to tap home from close range for an easy opener.

Major then doubled their lead within ten minutes; a shot from Shaun Lawrence deflected invitingly into the path of Roberts who touched the ball around the goalkeeper only for contact to be made as he shaped to shoot, allowing a retreating defender to clear. With all eyes on the match official, a corner kick was given and Roberts was bizarrely later advised to take a tumble in the area to justify the award of a spot kick. Thankfully justice was done as Roberts fired a deep corner to Rabone who brought the ball down and drove an early strike with his left foot that flashed across goal and was diverted into the roof of the net for a possible own goal. Rabone then found himself needlessly in the book and the game settled into a relatively defensive pattern as the hosts struggled to overcome their early deficit.

Major had central defenders Martin Atkinson and Adam Weller to thank as they worked together to deny Grampound an opening, with Atkinson blocking a threatening low cross and Weller heading clear to prevent a comeback. Major continued to threaten and Marco Ciarleglio found Rabone with a deep cross and Rabone smashed a volley over the bar. Midfielder Casey Hawkey almost added a third from range, with his powerful strike taking a deflection that lifted the ball towards the top corner, only for the Grampound goalkeeper to smother the ball at the second attempt.

Grampound were then given an opportunity late in the first half with a free kick on the edge of the Major area, however, Anton Lake was able to gather the dinked set piece when it appeared that a driven shot may have been a better option. Shaun Lawrence almost lost possession for Major before embarking upon a fine run that was crudely halted on the edge of the area; Aaron Hawken couldn't take advantage as his free kick curled harmlessly wide of the target.

Rabone, who had scored a hat-trick in the previous encounter, looked sharp as he turned his marker, driving goalwards to lift a left foot strike just over from a tight angle for the final action of the first half.

Lawrence almost caused a surprise with a strike immediately from kick off that had the visiting goalkeeper looking uncomfortable; the Grampound stopper was immediately called into action with a fine stop after Roberts had hit a stunning first time strike on the run after a fine volleyed pass by Aaron Bicknell. Lawrence was unfortunate not to add a third on just before the hour as his first touch made space for a fine curling strike that struck the crossbar and flew rapidly into the path of Roberts who could not adjust his feet in time to control his strike on goal.

Roberts' participation in the game ended prematurely as he was given a straight red card for a clumsy challenge on the opposing full-back in the corner. Roberts, who had worked hard all game to chase lost causes, made a sliding challenge as the defender cleared the ball and caught his man with a mistimed but not malicious challenge. The match official, located in the centre circle, originally signalled for a throw in and after an animated response from the touchline the referee inspected the subsequent injury to be told that the defender had a broken leg. Roberts was shown a straight red card and thankfully the suspected injury proved not to be the case as the defender returned to the action within a couple of minutes, albeit for a short period of time.

Rabone, leading the line for ten man Major, almost added a third when his low strike from the corner of the area beat the goalkeeper but not the far post and after winning a free kick, Rabone headed Lawrence's curling free-kick goalwards only for another fine stop to prevent another Major goal.

That proved to be Rabone's last contribution as he was replaced by late substitute Jason Rid, who was on hand to tuck home a 95th minute winner after fine work in the area from Ali Bicknell and Jean Francois was somehow converted against the odds with the visitors unable to clear.

PS. We hope that the Grampound winger injured late in the game makes a quick recovery...

St Columb Major certainly deserved their win today. Interestingly, the first goal changed the game after a short period of Grampound dominance but came from a throw awarded by the ref standing 35 metres away in the middle of the pitch. The lino did not put his flag up because the ball didn't go out but rolled down the line for quite a distance. This was clearly seen by everyone on that side of the ground and the ref made himself look a bit silly with the decision.

I am not in the habit of making critical comments about other players or teams but the player who was eventually sent off was very lucky to escape with just a ticking off in the first half when following the ball through and kicking out and catching the keeper who had the ball in his hands ages before. The sending off happenened after a horrendous tackle nearly 2 yards over the touchline with the ball already kicked out and hitting the wall about 10 metres back from the touchline. It says above that the tackle was not malicious - you may say that but we can all do without challenges of that kind. Dean Dunn, our clattered defender, was hurt but I heard no-one say his leg was broken - and I was attending to him with our manager. While he was initially being treated, one or two of the comments from the home players were rather unpleasant, however. He tried to carry on after 5 minutes treatment on the line but had to be subbed very soon after when unable to continue. We hope he is able to play again without too long a lay-off, but it was not looking good when we got home.

His brother, Greg Dunn, had the knee injury late on. This has happened to his knee before and his injury will add to the long list we currently have. Thanks for your concern - -we expect him back in action in a few weeks.

Referees certainly have a difficult job and at times struggle to see everything that happens on the pitch - it does make we wonder if more support from trained assistants would make things a little easier (this is a general statement rather than having any reference to those running the line today), although I know that this is much harder to achieve in reality.

I saw the earlier challenge and it wasn't great - to be fair there were quite a few late challenges (and the consistent breaking up of play in the midfield with fouls) that should have been dealt with firmly to make expectations clear; I understand that you had a similar problem in a recent game that could have resulted in a number of red cards and serious injuries? I clearly heard comments being made about a broken leg/ankle and even the match official, who was over fifty yards away from the incident, said that he was a trained first aider and that it was a broken ankle, so let's be thankful that Dean was not seriously hurt and that he makes a speedy recovery, along with Greg, who I thought had a good game and was given insufficient time on the ball to influence the game.

Grampound have every chance to achieve promotion and missed Weeks in attack - plenty of games to go and nobody should be assuming anything about promotion at this stage.

We have certainly missed Shane Weeks over recent games and we hope we will get him fit again soon as he is determined to go to the top of our club goalscoring table. I did not think the referee had a great game today but he cannot be blamed for that horror challenge that resulted in a red card. I have been around football for a very, very long time and have not seen too many like that from close range. We have a pretty young side and I am, though, pleased that one or two of our more senior players did not react in the way I might have 25 years ago when playing myself!

By the way, I am not Alastair, but Allan Webb, Grampound FC chairman (and pitch mower and general dogsbody, tidier-up etc).

Apologies Allan - and best of luck for the remainder of the season. The referee was not responsible for the challenge, Dom was. As I mentioned, it wasn't an acceptable challenge by any means - he is certainly not the kind of player that would intend to hurt an opposing player - he was over zealous trying to close the ball down in this case in my opinion.

I'd imagine that we will all have an opinion on this matter (it was interesting to hear the thoughts of your goalkeeper, who was closest to the incident), however, the referee's decision is final and Dom accepted the decision and left the field of play without fuss, even though he felt strongly that he'd tried to win the ball and got there too late.

There were some very odd comments today that surprised me a lot. But that's football.

Well if a bad tackle occurred and the player got sent off then thats all you can ask for I guess.

We lost a couple of good lads for a while from bad tackles as long as the ref acts then that's all he or she can do.

We won today and played well against Calstock. Would just like to say all the best to Calstock who are a similar club to us with similar aspirations who we wish all the best. Play the game the right way and hope they consolidate in they Prem. Had some good banter with your number 7 and 9. Good footballers, good lads and good luck. Thanks for coming back to the pub your teams a credit.

yes it wasn't the best tackle but he didn't go into it, intending to hurt the guy, it was clear to see he was trying to block the ball! and the tackle was made on the pitch, momentum took them off the pitch. The ref commented on the slide marks.

A scenario 2-3 years ago at the age of sixteen may not have so much significance to the incident this afternoon - it sounds to me that he got what he deserved on that day and learnt a lesson as his record has been spot on since. I've seen the same player take his fair share of hits this season without any sort of action taken, I'm sure you've seen a few similar things too by the sounds of the game at Foxhole! However, I'd much rather be talking about a referee making an assertive decision than one of the many scenarios where incidents go unpunished.

Biscovey 4 v Maker & Rame 2

Maker took the trip to Biscovey which could ultimately decide a promotion slot. The game started well for the Maker boys however wasted many key opportunities to take the league. At half time of a feisty affair the game was locked at 0-0. The second half started much like the first with both teams having chances to take the lead. Maker made it 1-0 after Tom Rothwell finished well, they were 2-0 up when Ben Dodds hit well on the volley. With 20 minutes to go Biscovey made inspired substitutions and turned the game on its head. They capitalised on silly fouls to bring it back to 2-2 before stretching the lead to 4-2. Biscovey remain and fully deserve to be the only team undefeated.
