Cornish-Ref Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 As a registered and active Senior Referee, I thought I'd start a topic that is very relevant – it’s easy to blame the referee......!!! The main question I would like to pose is the following? Teams and forum posters, seem to always blame the referee when they end up losing the game. Are they therefore looking for someone to blame as they cannot admit that they have lost or drawn a game due to the simple fact that their team played poorly? To second this, you never seem to see posted complaints whereby their game was cancelled due to no official being available. Remember this is a forum discussion and not me as a referee having a pop in return from other tread posts (some people will not read this last sentence)!
Michael Rabone Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 Starting with a positive, our match official yesterday (Mr Manning) did a fine job, maintaining control with minimal fuss, talking to players in a positive manner, interacting well with compliments for players and a ticking off for the odd misdemeanour. Everyone present acknowledged how the referee contributed to a good game and it made for a much more enjoyable game of football for players and supporters alike. Players do blame referees for poor performances as it is much easier to do so, sometimes comments can be valid but we've got to look at the professional game to see that this approach is now ingrained in football culture.
goodsense Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 Cornish -Ref as you will notice that not many teams / players will comment on this post as you have hit a sore spot with this one . All kudos to you though and I hope I`m wrong as positive fed back on refs is a little fadeed on this forum. :drink:
B Manning Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 Micheal, many thanks for your comments on the St Columb v Polperro game, it was a pleasure to officiate on a game where both teams wanted and succeded in playing good football to at least a good ECPL standard and I came away have enjoyed my afternoon in being involved in a quality game.

Lets hope you get more of them Paul! On a positive note re referees we at Sticker had the usual high quality Gary Cornish in charge and he controlled the game perfectly. When two teams just want to play football then the refs job is comparatively easy!
cornishteddyboy Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 Everyone is human and makes mistakes, players and officials. A referee has one set of eyes and for most of the game has to follow the ball. A player misses a tackle or shot at goal and you hear "Hard Luck" or "Unlucky". The last one always gets me because if the player misses the target he's not unlucky but a poor player. How can you be unlucky several times during a game or hundreds of times over a season! A referee has a split second to see an incident and a second or two to make up his mind to any punishment re a free kick, etc. A referee can't spot everything that's going on. A bad tackle spotted on the sidelines may be blocked from the referees view by players being between him and the action, etc. Clubs come on here begging for players because 20-30 year-olds are being priced out of the game due to subs, travelling, having to purchase boots, drinks after the match, etc, What comes first nowadays your sporting hobby or a young family, setting up a home, etc. Soon you'll be on here begging for referees.
Pitty Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 Would like to comment that since the ref appointee was centralised and made a full time job that tony steed has made a massive difference in appointing an official for nearly every fixture even when sometimes a replacement is required On the main topic no ref is responsible alone for a result the other 22 players on the pitch have an input into that. One of my (many) character flaws is a passion for this game and occasionally I can act a little petulant and question a decision in the heat of the moment and I apoligise to any official I may have tried to "engage" with! I would like to think I still have a pretty good relationship with nearly all the officials before, during and after a game and have had many a "grown up" post match banter and discussion in our clubhouse problems occur when abuse gets personal and continuous their is nothing worse then having to play against (or with) a player that is continuously moaning and berating decisions. I've never heard a ref turn round yet following moaning about a decision he's given and say "you know what lads your moaning is correct clearly I'm wrong I will give the decision the other way!!!!!!"
Nemesis Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 The best anyone can usuallly say about a ref is, that they didn't notice him. Case in point, Mark Atkins is listed in the programme for Holsworthy v Newquay, if it was him, well done Sir. If it was someone else, apologies for not knowing who you are but well done anyway.
