Cornwall Combination League

3rd December 2011

Penzance Reserves 0-1 Falmouth Athletic

Both managers must have finished the match with a satisfied smile, Phil Kellow of Athletic for another three points in the bag and Allen Spencer-Smith of Penzance for his teams overall performance. In fact it was Penzance who finished the stronger of the sides and, if they hadn’t been caught out by a training ground goal in the 6th minute, should have had at least a point from the game.

There are few real goalmouth chances during the whole game but Athletic catch Penzance out to score the only goal of the game early on. A throw on their left to the middle of the Penzance half, a one-touch flick on for Stefan Churcher leaping on the 6yd line to head in. A simple training ground goal. An Athletic break is crossed square but the 25yd shot flies high.

Penzance break down the left channel with Tom Putterill who beats the last man, flicks the ball past the advancing keeper but it rolls just wide of the far upright. Penzance then get a free-kick on the left edge of the D. Putterill takes it over the wall but the keeper leaps and fingertips the ball over the bar. From the resulting corner Penzance manage a flicked header but it goes wide of the back post.

Athletic get a good chance just before half-time after they break right. The ball is fired in, cleared off the line, knocked in again and blocked before a final shot sees new keeper Scott Halliday get down to block.

H-T

The second half was mostly Penzance but they couldn’t get clear chances on goal as Athletic defended in numbers. They break down the right, cross square into the box for Saul Pankhurst to try a looping header that has the keeper back-peddling and flapping his arms like a windmill but the ball skims the top of the bar.

A quick Athletic break results in a low hard shot that Halliday pushes away from the bottom of his right stick for a corner.

Porthleven Reserves 6-0 Penzance Reserves

The scoreline of 6-0 was not a real reflection of the game. A much weakened Magpies side playing without a recognised keeper and having no substitutes went in at half time with the score standing at 0-0. In fact the first half was even down to the number of corners conceded and fouls perpetrated.

Porthleven must have had a rocket from their manager at half-time and scored two quick goals to knock the stuffing out of Penzance. The other four goals also came in pairs as Penzance tried to defend in numbers but were tiring and making mistakes.

A quiet first half sees Porthleven get the first real chance of the game when they break and shoot forcing stand-in keeper Callum Gardener to parry the ball into the path of an advancing forward who shoots on reflex but sees his shot blocked on the line. Another shot is blocked and cleared.

A Porthleven corner results in a free header which goes over the bar.

Penzance slip the ball through the Port defence into the box where Jimmy England turns and shoots from 25yds but the keeper grabs the ball out of the air.

H-T

Within 4mins of the restart Porthleven are 2 up. The first following a quick forward ball to Kyle Frazier who cuts in and fires a shot across goal from 10yds, scoring with the help of the back post.

2mins later on 49min, Porthleven work the ball down their left to the goal line at the edge of the 6yd box. The square cross is easy for runner Dan Greet who volleys in from a whole 2yds out.

Another pair of goals is scored in the 63rd and 65th minutes. The first is scored when a long range shot is spilled by the keeper and Steve Williams following up knocks the ball in from 2yds, the second follows Porthleven pressure down the right allowing a cross to reach Dave Rogers who heads in from 6yds, across goal.

The final pair of goals arrive in the 74th and 76th min. The first from a corner on the right which is headed goal-ward forcing the keeper to palm it away where it drops to Sam Freeman who taps in from 4yds out.

The final comes from a run down the right channel where a crowd of players go for it and Paul Guest gets a volley off to score from 15yds.

Penzance swap keepers with injured captain Dean Mooney going in goal for the final 10mins. We later learn he has a broken foot and will be out for at least a month.

Penzance Reserves 4-1 St Ives Town

Apart from the five goals scored in this match there were few other clear cut chances. The first half is fairly even but the second was almost exclusively the Magpies’.

St Ives kick off but it is Penzance first to attack with a cross goal header going just wide following a corner on their right.

St Ives score first on 11mins with a header from Chris Russell following a free kick wide left. A long ball to the back of the box, the same as three of the goals Culdrose recently let in against Culdrose.

The games is even until the 24th minute when Penzance break right, cross to Lewis Caspall who flicks the ball along to Harry Corin at the back post who heads in from 6yds to make it 1-1.

St Ives then break laying the ball off then shoot but the ball goes wide of the left upright. Another break on the right is squared then volleyed but the keeper grabs it on the ground.

H-T

The second half starts with Penzance closing down the St Ives mid-field and it pays off within 6mins of the restart. Penzance get the ball on their left, cross and shoot, the ball is blocked but drops to Tom Putterill who has a tap in from 6yds out.

St Ives then get a free kick on the edge of the Penzance penalty box. The ball is volley to the left of keeper Scott Halliday but he dives and saves at the foot of the post.

The game evens out until Penzance apply more pressure and get their third on 70mins. A long pass from the keeper down their right drops to St Ives’ Josh Curnow, who under pressure turns and attempts a 35yd back pass which wrong foots the keeper and sneaks in at the far post to make it 3-1.

St Ives see a header fly over the Magpies bar following a long corner before Penzance make it 4-1 with 3mins of normal time left. A free kick 40yds out is taken by Bradley Wills to Corin who flicks the ball in cross goal from 8yds out.

F-T

A standing ovation from the Penzance supporters and even better the St Ives supporters were coming up and saying well done, well deserved. A great local derby and a first league win for the Penzance youngsters this season. Onwards and upwards.

Penzance: Scott Halliday, Ed Wilkes, Andy Annis, Harry Corin, Sam Clough, Darren Ball, Bradley Wills, Tom Putterill, Lewis Caspall, Will Southcott, Jimmy England

Subs: Callum Gardner (Putterill 80), Matthew Best, Jordan Anderson

Corners: Penzance 5-6 St Ives (3-2 1st half)

Fouls conceded: Penzance 8-15 St Ives
