Penryn 0 Foxhole 0 (Abandoned at half time)

Wednesday 26th October 2011

With the heavy rain which had begun midway through the first half showing no sign of easing, this game was halted during the interval, more, you felt, due to how conditions were likely to deteriorate in the second half rather than how the pitch had played until then. The visitors had, perhaps, the greater cause to welcome the decision as, without the bullish Griffin, they had appeared fairly toothless going forward, while a combination of some fairly inept finishing and heroic defending had kept them on level terms. However, the defiant stance and robust approach which had overwhelmed Truro at the weekend was again evident tonight as the Foxes fought valiantly to nullify the threat of the likes of Trevaskis and Streat.

Hazeldine's early header from Coates' cross offered hope of an improbable victory, but Peters was not to be tested again, his centre-half Howlett rendering him superfluous by constantly nodding away high balls aimed improvidentially towards an absent friend. Nonetheless, it took Penryn twenty-two minutes to create a decent chance, Blizzard's deep centre being headed back by Streat for Hobbs to sidefoot wide from eight yards. From then on, however, the home side were to make, and squander, a series of opportunities, the biggest culprit being the otherwise excellent Trevaskis. While he was unlucky to see a wicked cross-shot flashing narrowly past the upright, he really ought to have found the net when blazing over from close-range after Davis had skinned Thomas, and when he could only find the legs of Ryan Holland when sent clear by Moody. Strike partner Hobbs, too, may have done better when latching on to assists from both Richardson and Davis, the latter of whom also firing wide at the far post. Penryn were surely destined to locate their shooting boots before long and, with the isolated Cunningham having talked his way into referee Moses' notebook and the combative Hazeldine forced to withdraw with knee trouble, the omens were poor. Happily, though, not as poor as the weather forecast.
