Pendeen Rovers 4-0 Penzance Reserves

Both teams were short of players for this match with Pendeen playing Darren Payne up front and later on bringing on Sean George as a substitute.

The game was over by half time with Pendeen going in three nil up and it wasn’t until the last 15mins, once the fourth had gone in, that Penzance got close.

Pendeen kick off playing up the slope against a swirling wind. Penzance start the game playing 4-5-1, packing the mid-field, but within moments have to clear off the line following a break down the left. A break on the right followed by a square ball to Jack Ramsey sees him waste the chance by shooting wide of the back post.

Penzance now go 4-4-2 and within moments are a goal down. 14mins on the clock and Pendeen are awarded a free kick on the right about 25yds out. The wall is put up but Tristan Arthur curls the ball low seeing it go in at the near post just out of the reach of diving keeper Dan Baber.

A few moments later Pendeen get another free kick in the same place. This time the ball is lobbed over and a free header on the 6yd line skims the top of the bar.

On 25min Pendeen break right and square the ball. A tangle of players go in for it but it squirts out to Josh Mooney on the penalty spot who has a simple tap in to double the lead.

All one way now and the 3rd goal was either luck or skill depending who you support. Baber kicks the ball out and it drops to Duncan Clemens on half way. He lobs it back high and it drops into the goal behind the keeper.

Final action of the half sees a long Pendeen ball land on the edge of the box, a shot goes in but wide of the upright.

H-T

A Penzance attack breaks down, Pendeen kick long, one-on-one forces Baber down to block.

The half quietens down with few chances. During one Pendeen get a corner on the right. The ball comes over, goes out, a 30yd volley comes back in forcing Baber to make a great diving save to push the ball out.

A quick Penzance break on the left is squared to Jimmy England but he blasts it over the bar.

74mins and the last goal goes in. Penzance lose the ball on half way, Adam George chips the back line, Jack Ramsey beats the off side runs on and fires in low from the edge of the box.

Penzance attack down the right, a shot goes in, saved on the line, another shot is blocked by the keeper before an Andy Annis shot is blocked on the line and cleared.

Another Penzance break falls to Saul Pankhurst, who shoots, but once again it is blocked on the line.

Penryn Athletic Reserves 5-0 Penzance Reserves

Penzance didn’t deserve to lose by this score line. Even though this was a top v bottom clash for the first quarter of an hour it looked like roles were reversed as Penzance dominated the opening exchanges. Three of the goals were preventable; the Penryn keeper made three brilliant saves and Penzance played the last 35mins with only 10 men when Ryan Holland got sent off for a second yellow card.

The game kicks off with Penzance breaking right; squaring to Marcus Smith whose shot is grabbed out of the air by the keeper.

A Penryn break and cross goal pass is missed by the runners coming in at the back post before Wade Brown shoots over from the edge of the box.

Penzance break right; lay the ball to Ryan Andrew who shoots just over from 15yds.

On 19mins Penryn get their first following a long ball left, a cross to the back of the box, the ball knock back across for Brown to turn and shoot in from 6yds.

The rest of the half is fairly even apart from a couple of Penryn chances. The first follows a free kick on the right. The ball is knocked over and a free header goes over the bar and the second chance falls to Jowan May who fires wide following a long cross pitch ball left to right.

H-T

Penryn lose the ball in mid-field. Ryan Holland dribbles through 3 defenders, shoots from 15yds only to see the keeper make a great diving high leap to palm the ball away for a corner.

52mins and a poor back pass from Penzance puts the keeper under pressure. He kicks the ball out; it falls to Brown who knocks the ball in low from 15yds to make it 2-0.

Holland is then sent off, Penzance rearrange their formation and almost get a goal back. They break right, cross; Smith unleashes one of his blasters only to see the keeper make his 2nd brilliant save leaping high to push the ball away for a corner.

63mins on the clock and Penryn win a corner on their left. The ball is knocked into the near post, 2 defenders leap for it, the one at the back heads it onto the head of the front one and the ball loops over Baber to put Penryn 3-0 up.

Penzance win a free kick on their right. The ball is knocked over, headed in but the keeper makes the 3rd good save to leap and fingertip the ball over the bar for another corner.

74mins gone and the score goes to 4-0. A diagonal cross pitch ball bisects the defence, Brown runs onto it giving Baber no chance from 15yds.

The fight seems to go out of Penzance and Penryn have a series of half chances before Craig Barclay tries a shot from 30yds only to see it bounce back off the cross bar

Penzance’s last chance falls to Saul Pankhurst whose header at the near post following a break on the right goes wide.

The ref’s watch seems to have stopped as he finds extra minutes to add on and after 90+5 Penryn complete the scoring. Another long ball for their runners squirts away from the keeper, under pressure, to Ryan Reeve who has a 12yd tap in, into an empty net.

F-T

Penzance couldn’t cope with the long ball and runner’s game and were drawn across at the back leaving 2 on 1 at the back post!
