Dave S (MUFC)
Greetings from a Mangotsfield United fan! Mike Odgers of Falmouth Town fame might be best placed to answer this query. Hi Mike! We're trying to fill in some gaps in our history results-wise & one that we cannot seem to locate is the result of the Falmouth v Mangotsfield game played on 19 April 1975 (as far as we know). We know that the game at Mangos ended 3-3 in December 1974, but the return game scoreline at Bickland Park is proving elusive. Programmes available to us from that time aren't much help & we've tried a few other avenues to find this result, but there's been no luck so far. Hope you can help. Best wishes from Dave S
Mike Odgers
Hi Dave, Spooky! I am here looking at some old Mangotsfield programmes you and Bob certainly make interesting reading. Yes you are correct on the date Saturday 19th.April 1975-Kick Off 7-00pm FALMOUTH TOWN 4 MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 3 ht 1-1 (Attendance 550) Scorers FT-Richard Davis-Keith Etheridge-Len Ellery-Joey Scott MU-Derek Nutt-Colin Wilkie- Vic Barney Referee C Mallett booked 3 players including the manager Doug Hillard (A lot was made of bookings in those days) (Aggregate 7-6 lol)Some great games with Mangotsfield in the 70's Reading the Packet report Colin Chegwyn didn't arrive as his car broke down-(was it a Morris Minor?) There are two good pics of Nutt and Scott scoring and the grandstand was full so must have been a good gate-I could find out from Tony Pearce(550) Best wishes to you and Bob hopefully our paths might cross during the season
Dave S (MUFC)
Hi Mike What a prompt response! Thanks very much too, I should have guessed you'd have the answer in next to no time. Yes indeed, it is spooky as well that you have been reading some of our old programmes at thia time. I do as well occasionally just to see what we said all those years ago. It's amazing what you forget, but then reading something again, brings it all back. Bob's the one who's updating our history, much more so than me. He's been liaising a lot with Steve Small at Clevedon Town who is researching their history & I get copied in all the e-mails & chit-chat. Mind you, they're both retired, so they have loads of time to to do this sort of thing! Bob has found a lot of discrepancies with our results even up to the comparitively recent mid-80s, as accurate records were not always kept by MUFC. League tables in newspapers & programmes wouldn't always tally & some results & re-arranged dates were just impossible to find. The Falmouth one in 1975 was one such result, so thanks for providing us with the answer. Any chance in some way we might be able to see the photos & report that you mention? One name you mentioned rings a bell with me - Len Ellery. I started watching non-league in 1987-88 & it was either that season or the one after that one weekend, I watched Paulton Rovers v Barnstaple Town, who had Len Ellery at No 4. There was an incident where I think he was pulled up for a foul & he started arguing with the referee, to the point that I think he grabbed a chunk of the ref's shirt & pulled him towards him as if to threaten him! I can remember thinking, "Hey you can't do that!", but what I cannot remember is whether he was then booked or sent off, or whether he got off with just a warning! Anyway, thanks again for your very prompt response & I hope you're well. One of us (or both) may well be heading to the Duchy later this year, so you never know, we might just meet up! I see your league fixtures are already out, so at least we can plan ahead! Best wishes Dave Hi Dave, Spooky! As Dave explained, I am struggling with quite a few results for Mangotsfield in the 1980s, so perhaps you could help me with this one. I have a results grid, but as is usually the case, the result I am after is missing. It's Saltash v Mangotsfield on the 2nd May 1981. Now I know that Saltash won the game and if my records are to tally then it has to be 4-1. If not, then I have other problems!! Anything you can give me will be appreciated Thanks again. Dave S (MUFC)
Hi Mike Apologies for getting back in touch with you after you sent me the Falmouth v Mangotsfield report & pictures in the post (received last week), but my PC has been down recently, but I am now back up & running again, so belatedly, many thanks for the articles. I'm sure we'll feature them in the programme in the coming season.
