Cornwall Combination League

10th May 2011

Penzance Reserves 0-11 Helston Athletic

Helston came to Penzance needing to win to maintain their challenge to win the Combination League and inflicted on the Magpies worst ever league defeat. Helston were so pumped up they would have beaten anyone and some of their goals were unstoppable. Penzance had their chances as well hitting the woodwork twice, looking a decent side when they had the ball, but they could not hold back the blue tide.

Helston kick off facing towards the entrance and it is Penzance who have the first chance on goal. A corner on the left is knocked over to the back of the box where Tom Putterill gets in a header but sees the ball bounce off the bar and away.

For a while Helston look jittery but their nerves are calmed in the 13th min. A long ball from the back sees Liam Eddy run onto it and he scores from 10yds out with a low shot. A few moments later another cross goal shot goes wide.

Helston then gets a quick-fire double in the 21st and 25th minutes, the first from a right to left cross to Eddy who lays the ball back for Dan Stidwell who volleys in from 15yds, the second comes from a sublime curling shot from Eddy from fully 40yds out on the touch-line.

Penzance try to come back at Helston but the defence is too strong.

The 4th goes in on 40mins following a corner on the right which is knocked to the near post a flicked in by Eddy. This has been Penzance’s Achilles Heel all season.

2mins later another is scored from a break down the right. The ball is squared for Mark Goldsworthy to unleash an unstoppable screamer from 10yds.

Once again, like at the start of the first half, Penzance get the better of the early exchanges and a square ball to Jimmy England, following a break on the right, is flicked on but bounces off the post. Lewis Caspall is put through but his flicked ball past the advancing keeper slips past the left upright.

Helston then score 3 quick goals to knock the stuffing out of Penzance. 56mins gone and Helston break right for Eddy to fire in another screamer from 25yds, 59mins and it is 0-7 when Helston break right, a shot is deflected to Goldsworthy who has a simple tap-in from 10yds, 61mins for 0-8 following a corner on the left which is knocked long for Goldsworthy to head it in cross goal.

0-9 after 76mins from a Goldsworthy shot at the back post following a strong run by Eddy down the left. Five minutes later Helston get double figures when Jason Roberts fires one in from the edge of the box that is so hard the keeper can only palm it onto the underside of the bar and in.

Just before full till Helston inflict Penzance’s worst ever league defeat of 0-11 when Mikie Davies, 40yds out on the right touch-line lobs the keeper at the far post.
