cornishteddyboy Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 Cornwall Combination League 19th October 2010 Penzance Reserves 3-3 Newquay Reserves This game was a great advert for combo football, six good goals, some good moves, Newquay going two up, Penzance coming back to take the lead, an equalizer late in the match, then Penzance hanging on for a point. Plenty of entertainment for the decent sized crowd to talk about afterwards. Both teams have lot of youngsters in their line-ups, as both are rebuilding this season. A cool night with the odd shower didn’t dampen the action as Newquay kick off playing towards the entrance end of the ground. They break right, square the ball but a back post shot goes wide. Penzance then break down their left. The ball is floated long to the back post for Liam Andrew to head down forcing the keeper to scramble and eventually save. A quick break on the right along the line by Andrew, sees him look up and try to lob the keeper from 40yds but the ball hits the side netting. 30mins on the clock and Newquay get 2 goals in 2mins. A corner on the right is knocked across, the ball is booted out, in again to Dom Roberts who volleys in low from 15yds. From the kick-off Penzance lose the ball, it’s knocked forward, a low shot is well parried by Penzance keeper Ryan Gendall. The ball rebounds out to Roberts who grabs his and Newquays second with a low shot from 10yds out. 32mins gone and Penzance are two down. Three minutes pass when Penzance break through Jimmy England who beats a couple of tackles along the left wing before putting over a inch perfect high ball to the back post for Andrew to knock down and fire in cross goal to make it 1-2. The game is end to end the rest of the half as everyone takes breath. H-T Penzance start the half with a couple of subs and one, James Squires proves to be a real thorn in the side of Newquay, making the second Penzance goal in the 49th minute. He works his way down the right beating three challenges before squaring the ball to the edge of the box where Ross Williams bangs in a low shot from 20yds. 2-2 all to play for. Penzance in charge for a few minutes as Squires torments Newquays back four. A long ball from Gendall is flicked on to Andrew who bisects the defence, runs on one on one with the keeper and manages to curl in a low shot from 20yds. Penzance 3-2 up after 57mins, could they hold on? Newquay work the ball around the middle of the Magpies half, Penzance clam up so the Peppermints try a screamer from 30yds forcing Gendall has to make a great flying leap to palm the ball away for a corner. The tide is turning, Newquay pressing, Penzance playing deeper and deeper, being caught out of position at the back. Six minutes left on the clock a Newquay cross pitch ball left to right, Jamie Tipton runs in to the edge of the box, a high cross goal shot giving the keeper no chance. Best goal of the game. Last 5mins and Penzance hold on as Newquay come forward looking for the winner. F-T Must point out that Simon Berryman the referee had a great game in the middle, let the game flow, had a quiet word with any wrongdoers, well done. Penzance Man of the Match goes to two players, Steve Winters and Terry Noble. Worked well together at the back cutting out a lot of breaks and starting many themselves. Penzance – Ryan Gendall, Joe Chadwick, Lewis Caspall, James Street, Sam Clough, Tom Putterell, Steve Winters, Liam Andrew, Ross Williams, Terry Noble, Jimmy England Subs – James Squires (England 45), Adam George (Clough 45), Stuart Strong (Putterell 73), Brian Andrew, Francis Pellow Corners: Penzance 0-8 Newquay (0-5 1st half) Fouls conceded: Penzance 9-11 Newquay Crowd – 63 (roughly 6 from Newquay, 6 from Pendeen)
