Hayle Reserves 1-0 Penzance Reserves

If you stood outside the Penzance dressing room after the match you might have heard some cries of pain as they were kicking themselves for throwing at least a point away. They got caught out with a simple training pitch move; a near post header, from a corner with a couple of players blocking the keeper. But then, you win some, lose some. (AAHH kick me someone!)

The first half was fairly uneventful with few chances to either side, Penzance playing down the slope into a wind. A Hayle through ball to Sam Charlton sees him try to chip the advancing keeper from 30yds but the ball gets caught in the breeze and drops over.

Penzance get the ball, pass it around the edge of the box before Tom Putterell tries a curler from the left, cross goal but it goes wide of the upright. A mix-up in the Hayle defence gives Putterell another chance but his toe poke from 10yds rolls slowly towards the goal giving a defender time to get back and clear.

From the kick-off Penzance break right with Liam Andrew, who squares the ball along the front of goal but the runners coming in all miss it.

Hayle break right into the box but a rising shot hits the side netting. Another break on the right sees Ryan Gendall flick the ball away for a corner on the left. 53mins on the clock when it’s taken and as described, a near post goal by Hayle player/manager Dean Mooney scoring the only goal of the game.

Penzance come at Hayle trying to equalize. A corner on the right, a free header at the back post for Andrew goes wide. This is followed by a long ball from the back to Putterell who runs into the box from the right, tries a low cross goal shot only to see the keeper get down and grab the ball.

Hayle float the ball in from the left, open goal but the striker fires over from 15yds.

A Penzance free kick on the left, shot goes in just wide of post.

The last action of the game sees Hayle almost double their lead when they get a free kick on their right. Chris Pugh fires one in but Gendall manages to fingertip it onto the bar and away.

Good performance by the 8 Penzance youngsters aged 18 or under but Penzance sorely lacking a predator striker up front. Man of the Match for the Magpies, Ross Williams.
