cornishteddyboy Posted October 15, 2010 Report Posted October 15, 2010 Combination League Cup Preliminary Round 9th October 2010 Penzance Reserves 2-0 Ludgvan The scoreline does not reflect that Penzance had the lion’s share of the possession in the match. Long range shots peppered the Hurlers goal and if wasn’t for keeper Jason Wilcox the score could have reached double figures. It was all one way during the first half and even though Ludgvan were much better after the break they found it difficult to break out from defence. There were a lot of petty free kicks and Penzance had a couple of chances to score from them. First time they get a spot kick just left of centre about 25yds out. Joe Day takes it and fires the ball in low only to see Wilcox dive at the bottom of the far post to clear away for a corner. The second chance comes from a free kick in the centre. The ball goes in wide, a header comes back to the left followed by a shot across the line of the goal that no one reaches. Penzance break right with Lewis Caspall who runs into the box shooting low from 15yds and sees the keeper make a good diving save at the near post. Another Penzance break through the middle sees Jimmy England fire over the bar from 10yds out. There is much frustration for Penzance trying to breach the Ludgvan defence, and they are reduced to shooting from long range. The last minute of the half sees the deadlock broken. A Magpies corner on the left, the ball comes over, a header in is cleared by the keeper, another header is headed out, a couple more headers in the box before Tom Putterell rises from 6yds to loop a header over the keeper. 45mins and it’s finally 1-0. H-T Ludgvan come out much stronger and break on their right. A shot from Bryan Palmer forces Penzance keeper Ryan Gendall to get down at his post to push the ball away. Penzance then break with Darren Payne, (playing his first game for months, years, ages), who runs into the box, shoots but the ball is deflected away for a corner. On 58mins, Ludgvan’s Alistair Birch is sent off for a second bookable offence. Penzance break on their right, a cross goes in for a free header at the back post which goes wide. Putterell chases a lost cause ball down the left, gets to it, crosses square to Payne who scuffs an open goal shot which gently rolls to the grateful keeper. Another break on the right finds the ball being squared for a shot which the keeper clears, the ball is curled back in and John Matthews heads clear off his goal line to Caspall who shoots over the bar. Payne makes up for his scuffed shot when on 73mins when he picks up a loose goal kick running back in to the area and flicking the ball into the net past the advancing keeper. Last goalmouth action comes from a Penzance throw which is laid off, the shot comes in and bounces off the upright.
