timmullion1981 Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 This Division 2 Cup 1st leg encounter at Clifden Parc was a well anticipated affair with the first game of the league season ending in a 5-0 win to Mullion. St Blazey were going to hold some grudges and it didnt take long for them to get into the game. With a blustery wind uphill in the first half, Mullion attacked from the off and didnt let up for 45 minutes. Few speculative shots were matched by the St Blazey keeper who had a good game. After ten minutes, the physical nature of the game came to the forefront with a strong but fair challenge on Captain Tanya Powell resulting in her being taken off. This made Mullion change from their experimental 4-3-3 formation and reverted back to the more traditional 4-4-2. This didn't change their attacking style and good wing play saw a succession of corners of which two were saved, one flashed past the post and another cleared off the line. The pressure told eventually and with a free kick from about 25 yards, Jodie Newark smashed it into the top corner with the keeper having no chance. Half time 1-0. Mullion were prepared for an onslaught in the 2nd half as the strong wind was a major factor but it never came and their free flowing passing game was a welcome sight with crisp passing along the floor counter acting the elements. They created more chances and got the 2nd goal to take the pressure off with a cross from Newark dispatched at the far post by the onrushing Vicky Smith. A good game considering the elements and looking forward to the return leg in 4 weeks. Notable mention goes to the Blazey Captain who marked the leagues top scorer Becky Hall not allowing her to score. Also sad news comes today that Jodie Newark has a fractured tibia from a challenge in the 80th minute. We are waiting on results from the fracture clinic to see the extent of the damage. Hurry back soon Jodie!! Lady of the match- Kirsty Dilley. Ran the show in centre midfield, breaking up the play, playing the easy ball and covering her team mates in an all encompassing display.
