cornishteddyboy Posted October 8, 2010 Report Posted October 8, 2010 These will be in tomorrow's programme word for word. 2nd October 2010 St Just 6-0 Penzance Reserves There was only one main difference in the two sides and that was the pace of Gary Matthews up front for St Just. Penzance matched their opponents in most areas of the park and played well against a team that always thinks Penzance at home is like a cup final. Penzance were missing defenders James Street and Darren Ball, but welcomed Ryan Andrew back from university for the weekend. We were surprised how sparse the crowd was counting only 50 people there. The pitch looked quite rough especially the goalmouths but playable. St Just kick off and break left. The ball is knocked over for a free header that hits the post and clears. Six minutes in and St Just score their first following a free kick on the right. The ball is floated in, a defender miss-kicks and Kevin Snell sneaks in a low shot from 10yds. A Penzance free kick on the right from Joe Day fools the keeper at the near post but unfortunately bounces off the upright. Warning bells ring when a St Just through ball sees Matthews outpace the Penzance defence forcing Ryan Gendall to make a great grab before he can shoot. A few moments later Matthews scores the first of two quick goals. The Penzance defence is drawn right as St Just break squaring the ball to Matthews who turns and shoots in at the near post. Two minutes later the score is 3-0 as again St Just break left. The ball is knocked across behind the defence to Matthews who slides the ball in from 5yds. The last 15mins of the half are fairly even. H-T For the first 15mins of the second half both teams cannot get in close until on 58mins St just break free on the right with Neil Curnow who scores the goal of the game with a curler that goes in at the back post to make it 4-0. 74mins on the clock when Penzance lose the ball in midfield. A quick through ball for Matthews to run onto, turning and then shooting the ball in, cross goal, to complete a hat-trick. Penzance get a break, shoot high but St Just keeper palms it away and the ball is cleared. 3mins to go when a long ball from the St Just right reaches Neil Curnow, who then crosses for Adie Hart to head in from close range to complete the scoring. Penzance Man of the Match – Liam Andrew Penzance – Ryan Gendall, Joe Day, Steve Winters, Ross Williams, Lewis Caspall, Tom Putterell, Liam Andrew, Joe Chadwick, Ross Badcock, Ryan Andrew, Allen Spencer-Smith Subs – Jimmy England (Putterell 65), Sam Clough (Badcock 75), Brian Andrew (Spencer-Smith 83) Corners: St Just 4-4 Penzance (1-3 1st half) Fouls conceded: St Just 13-15 Penzance Crowd: 50 (6 from Pz) 5th October 2010 Penzance Reserves 1-0 RNAS Culdrose A win for Penzance on Tuesday evening after a run of five defeats sees them jump a couple of places up the table to 14th. An early strike from either Jimmy England or Tom Putterell (got to find out) promised more goals to come as the lads found their passing game but Culdrose marked tightly throughout and in the end had three players sent off late in the second half as the yellow cards accumulated. But even with ten, then nine and finally eight players Culdrose never cracked again. The Culdrose tackling wasn’t really deliberate, more clumsy or late than anything. Culdrose kick off and the game starts with Penzance looking the more threatening. They break left, cross square to the edge of the box, in goes a low shot just wide of the near post. This is followed by a free kick on the Magpies left. The ball is floated into the box where a free header goes high over the bar. 13mins gone and the game’s only goal is scored. Penzance break down their right hand side, lay the ball off to Jimmy England who runs into the box and scores low cross goal, (also read Tom Putterell as the goal scorer as I was writing in my notebook at the time and only had half an eye on the match!) Penzance get a free kick on the edge of the box. The wall lines up with a Penzance player in it. Joe Day fires in a low shot, player moves to one side, ball deflects off his foot, from being a certain goal, onto the keeper and deflects off him and is cleared. Culdrose break right, the ball is laid off, a rising shot comes in and Ryan Gendall has to fingertip the ball onto the bar and away. Penzance then get the ball midfield, charge forward, a shot goes in, the keeper drops it, a toe poke goes just wide of the upright. H-T The first thing I write for the second half is both teams are giving away a series of free kicks as play is continually broken up. I also report after the hour mark you can see the Penzance players are tiring. There are few chances this half. Penzance hit the bar twice in fairly quick succession, the first from a Putterell strike, the second from a Penzance free kick that is deflected up onto the woodwork. Then the ref starts sending off the Culdrose players for their tackling. I don’t know names or remember each reason why. Double yellows mostly, for late tackles, etc. When Culdrose are down to eight for the last 10mins they have their best chances of the match but fire wide. Penzance have the last word when they break left fire in a shot to see the keeper make a leaping fingertip save to tip the ball over the bar for a corner. Penzance Man of the Match goes to Ross Williams. Had a good game at the back and set up many of the Penzance attacks. Penzance – Ryan Gendall, Joe Chadwick, Lewis Caspall, Sam Clough, Tom Putterell, James Street, Jimmy England, Liam Andrew, Ross Williams, Steve Winters, Joe Day Subs – James Squires (Putterell 77), Brian Andrew Corners: Penzance 7-1 Culdrose (4-1 1st half) Fouls conceded: Penzance 13-20 Culdrose Crowd - 51
