cornishteddyboy Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 Bit late but I've been busy. Gradually giving the archive section of the website a complete overhaul just for the stattos. Match report. Cornwall Combination League 25th September 2010 Helston Athletic 2-0 Penzance Reserves A severely depleted Magpies side frustrated Helston for long periods at Kellaway Park but in the end were finally defeated by two set pieces both scored by Mark Goldsworthy. Penzance played a defensive game putting as many men behind the ball as possible and Helston must have had at least 75% of the play but found it hard work to break down the Penzance back line of Street, Ball, Spencer-Smith and Andrew. They were reduced for long periods to shooting from long range much to the crowd’s frustration. Tom Putterell ploughed a lonely furrow up front for Penzance backed by Caspall, Chadwick, Williams and England. From the start it’s all one way with Ryan Gendall having to make a great double save from close range shots to deny Helston an early lead. Helston also have a corner on the left, swing the ball over but head wide at the back post. Gendall then fingertips another long range shot over for a corner which comes to nothing. H-T The game is only 3mins old after the re-start when Helston push their noses in front. A corner from the right to the back of the 6yd box, Goldsworthy nips in and knocks in a deflected shot which wrong footed Gendall. We didn’t know whether to give it as an OG but decided to let it stand. It’s almost all one way now with the odd Penzance break but still Helston can’t get in close. A Helston free kick on the right is crossed over but shot goes over the bar. When they do break through Gendall is more than capable. Helston get through the middle, one on one but Gendall nips out and smothers the shot. 11mins to hold out when Helston break down the right, in comes another long shot which Gendall palms away for a corner on the right. The ball comes over to the near post, Gendall is blocked and Goldsworthy pokes it in from 3yds to make it 2-0. One last break from Helston down the right, shot in, side netting. F-T The Penzance youngsters did ok playing a defensive game which to most was totally alien to them having always pushed forward. To hold the league leaders to two set pieces was also good news, so Manager Allen Spencer-Smith had a few positives from this match. Also we won the raffle so we took something away! Penzance Man of the Match was Ryan Gendall. Penzance – Ryan Gendall, Jimmy England, Darren Ball, James Street, Lewis Caspall, Tom Putterell, Ross Williams, Brian Andrew, Joe Chadwick, Sam Clough, Allen Spencer-Smith Subs – what are those? Bare 11 players made the trip. Corners – Helston 10-3 Penzance (3-1 1st half) Fouls conceded – Helston 6-8 Penzance Crowd – 49 (2 from Pz)
