cornishteddyboy Posted September 26, 2010 Report Posted September 26, 2010 Notice how badly the Combo sides did against sides from East Cornwall. Only Perranwell won in a West v East match-up, out of 8 ties. Have the standards in the Combo slipped this season?
Dave Deacon Posted September 26, 2010 Report Posted September 26, 2010 Out of yesterday's 8 fixtures of East v West, I would say there were only two real shocks - newcomers St Teath to the Senior Cup had a great result against St Just who have only lost one league games in 8. The other was Troon's 6-0 defeat by Probus. Probus have struggled so far, and after watching them a couple of weeks ago, although in Paul Cox they have a goalscorer, I'm surprised the margin of victory they achieved. From the other games - ok, Holmans and Ludgvan were playing Division One sides, but both the Combo sides are struggling and I must admit, having watched Holmans, their defending left a lot to be desired! St Agnes might have expected more than they got, but St Dennis are probably still in a positive mood after promotion last season; Morwenstow v St Ives was a mid-table clash and could have gone either way; while St Dominick's result against Wendron looks good, although perhaps if you stop Mike O'Neill from scoring, you stop Wendron? That leaves Perranwell v Nanpean - well the Combo team won, but I would have expected a more convincing scoreline.
BickyNutt Posted September 26, 2010 Report Posted September 26, 2010 From St ives point of view, it was without doubt our worst performance of the season. We went 2-0 down early on to 2 defensive errors, could have been worse but went in 2-0 at half time. Second half we thought we would come back and win with the wind and the slope in our favour but we were terrible after the restart, ended up going 4 or 5 nil down, and had to play with 10 due to injuries and ended up losing 5-2. I think its fair to say that the result was more St ives being bad then Morwenstow being amazing, but they did have a few good players and on the day they very much deserved to beat us. Good luck to them for the rest of the season.

Thanks for the comments dave we played very well yesterday, the pitch is as good as anything in the county at the moment that helps .We have real quality at the club it has taken a few games to adjust and with a couple of new signings due this week we are getting stronger.Nice to see so many people watching the game including some league officals. Thanks to the lads from St Just who where vey sporting in defeat and a great buch in the pub afterwards
Perranwell Twins Posted September 26, 2010 Report Posted September 26, 2010 Nanpean gave a good account of themselves!

St. Dominick didn't have to worry about Mike as he wasn't available along with 6 other starters for us. saying that, the team we fielded should have been good enough to compete. could bore with the usual excuses (ref, lack of players, turning up with not long to before start...) but at the end of the day we just didn't turn up. Good luck to St. Dominick in league and cup, looked a decent outfit. especially Crawfs, Reidy and Rookie stood out for them.

Concur with that comment Dave we were far below the level expected of a "senior" side in the 1st half conceeding 5 goals but following the "pep" talk at half time at least the players reacted in the right way and the flood of goals was stopped and the performance improved slightly but it still isn't good enough and we may be in relegation trouble come May unless we start to show the improvement we displayed this time last year following a poor start. It's obviously a concern for the combo league that apart from Perranwell all of the sides in the West of the county suffered heavy defeats. I think the one person who will be probably happy with the result will be John Roberts the combo fixture secretary.....makes his life a lot easier

Have the standards in the Combo slipped this season? Let's not forget the Peninsula league took three of the better sides from the Combo 1st season and the season after Perranporth with no teams relegated back down in recent years. Times have changed, so I would like to see the league strengthened by reducing to 18 clubs. One way is to not replace clubs promoted to SWP, alternatively relegate the bottom side every season until the league reaches 18. Relegation is usually good for the club and the league. Portreath are undefeated at home so far this season in Fal/Hel D1!
B Manning Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 Surely skippy the Penisular league took good sides out of east cornwall as well, but I was suprised that the results went the way they did and that includes Nanpean to only lose to Perranwell by 1 goal was a good performance as Perranwell are consistantly a very good side.

St dominick were missing several key players aswell due to injurys and suspensions, thought that we dominated the game and if it wasnt for your linesmen would have scored earlier in the game! (dnt no how someone can be offside when 2 players are on the posts!!) anyway it didnt matter in the end and good luck to Wendron in the league they seem to have decent core of players with number 14 (i think, big centre midfielder good on the ball) n number 4 standing out for me and was good to see wendron battle to the end and not just give up. good bunch of lads n wish them all best for the rest of the season

Well thank you for that reply as some people on here ( Mr TW.T ) always puts us down!! We are a village club on a slopey pitch. :c:
B Manning Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 If you think thats a slopey pitch you should have played on the old Wycombe Wanderers, Loakes Park ground, you needed to put your foot on the ball to stop it rolling away at the kick off.
