Troon 1-1 Penzance Reserves

The Magpies deservedly held a 1-0 nil lead at the break but Troon scored early in the second half and they then proceeded to hustle Penzance off the ball with some robust tackling that broke up the formations and rhythm of both teams.

Troon kick-off into a slight breeze and for the first 15mins their passing is crisper than Penzance’s but neither team dominate. On 19mins Penzance cross from the left with Joe Day, the ball is headed on by Joe Chadwick to the back post, where Liam Andrew heads back cross goal for his first goal for the club.

Now the game becomes mostly one way but still with few goalmouth chances. Ross Badcock does a daisy may run beating at least six tackles before shooting high forcing the Troon keeper to palm away for a corner. A Penzance free kick on the left results in a Ryan Andrew header at the near post going wide of the upright.

Just before half-time Troon have a couple of chances. They break right into the box; the ball is controlled by a hand, a point-blank shot at the post forces keeper Ryan Gendall to make a great save. Troon then play the ball cross pitch, right to left but the resulting shot rolls along the front of the goal and clear.

Penzance are still digesting their half-time team talk when Troon pounce in the 51min to equalise. A through ball on the left for Ashley Smeeth to run onto, a low cross goal shot gets a slight deflection to leave the keeper flat-footed.

My next line in the notebook says “robust tackling from Troon” and it was.

Troon break, shot goes wide before they break right, shoot from a tight angle forcing James Street to clear off the line. Game is held up for a late challenge on Steve Winters, Joe Day goes off injured and we have some “Handbags at Dawn” for a late double challenge on Street. Ref starts issuing cards, four yellows to Troon, two against Penzance.

Penzance work the ball forward before shooting wide. Troon back into the Penzance box going wide, Gendall goes down to block the shot before scrambling up to dive to clear away the rebound.

Penzance break into the box, knock the ball round before Lewis Caspall has a clear shot but fires over. Back come Troon one on one but Gendall brilliantly saves the shot, tipping it away for a corner.
