Soccer Follower Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 Goonhavern 3 Chacewater 2 h/t 1-2 Chacewater were slow to settle against the wind and went one down early on from a low shot. The visitors equalised following a corner and took the lead when Darren Bennetts sped away and finished with a good strike. Luke Kelland missed a golden chance before former Chacewater player Jake Merrifield equalised with a shot into the corner of the net. With a draw looking favourite Joe Carlyon put away a last minute penalty following a miss-timed challenge to a high ball into the box. Good workout for both teams who were slightly understrength with league matches on the horizon.Well reffed by the reliable Phil Avis.
Woodmanaldo Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 Holywell Bay & Cubert Athletic (Duchy 2) 3 Grampound Reserves (Duchy 5) 2 A good preseason workout for Grampound's Reserves in which with better finishing we may have gained at least a draw from the game. Grampound weathered an early storm against a physical Holywell Bay team, having to deal with a number of long balls as well as having the sun in our eyes making it difficult to judge the ball in the air. The closest Holywell came was a long range effort that crashed against the bar but Harry Cooke in the Grampound goal didn't really have a shot of note to save but there were some good defensive blocks & Holywell players failed to hit the target when well placed. Grampound gradually got into the game & went the closest to scoring in the half when some good passing down the Grampound right resulted in Dean Dunn delivering a superb ball to the back post & Darren Endean's header was brilliantly tipped over by Simon Drew in the Holywell goal. Just before half-time Grampound wasted a couple of good chances to take the lead, firstly Jason Retallick fired over from close range after latching onto Dean Dunn's knock down, then Matt Skews had an air shot from close range before Tim Peers then drilled the ball wide. Grampound were punished for not getting out quickly enough from a corner at the start of the 2nd half & a Holywell player was able to sidefoot the ball home from close range unchallenged. Grampound didn't let there heads drop & Mike Berry out jumped the Holywell keeper following a corner to equalise on the hour. The Holywell keeper then made a brilliant double to firstly deny Dunn from a free-kick before getting up to block the rebound from Endean. Holywell scored 2 sloppy goals in the last 15 minutes, firstly a misskick found the corner of the net before a flick-on from a throw-in missed everyone and found the far corner of the net. Grampound kept plugging away with Retallick volleying over from close range from a free-kick before Endean converted Brad Robinson's brilliant low cross from the right in the last meaningful action of the game to make the final score 3-2 to Holywell Bay & Cubert Athletic. A decent workout against a side 3 leagues higher than ourselves & good luck to Holywell Bay who I believe have St Austell, Premier Sixes & Lostwithiel all in the first month of the season - so a very tough start for them!
