Penzance Reserves 3-0 Sennen

Sennen brought a strong team to Penlee Park for this pre season friendly and for long periods of the game gave as good as they got and on this showing will do well this season. This was the third year in a row Sennen have played at Penzance in a friendly and this year they were a much older and bigger side than before.

Sennen kick off facing towards the gatehouse end of the ground and for the first 10mins or so the game is end to end with little to show in the goalmouths for the effort until Penzance work the ball right to left across the middle of the park. The ball is knocked over from the left wing into the box where Joe Day rises to head the ball into the net only to see the keeper make a great leaping save to push the ball up and over for a corner.

The corner is taken on the right by Ryan Holland who fires it in low and hard. The keeper punches it back out to Holland who again puts the ball in low and hard and unfortunately for Sennen a defender at his near post tries to clear it only to see the ball deflect off his boot high into the net to put Penzance one up after 17mins.

From the kickoff Sennen break and catch the Magpies defence napping and a low shot is deflected wide for a corner.

The game evens out again for a few minutes with Penzance taking long range or snatched shots on goal (this happened all game), until Day runs into the box only to be bundled over. The ref points to the spot and Day gets up and puts the spot kick strait down the middle to put Penzance 2-0 up after 24mins.

The rest of the half once again is even apart from Sennen’s Steve Jones breaking through to go one on one with keeper Ryan Gendall only to flick the ball wide of the upright. Penzance’s Ross Badcock goes on a daisy run beating three or four defenders only to shoot widely at goal when it would have been easier to score.

H-T

The first 15mins of the second half sees Penzance changing their tactics and they spend a lot of the time passing the ball around with Sennen chasing but their moves keep breaking down once near the box but on 65mins they go 3-0 up when a Sennen goal kick is headed back by Darren Ball to Day who flicked on to Badcock in the box. He does a clever back heel to fool the defender, turns and shoots low under the keeper.

Penzance get a corner on the right. Day knocks it over but Ryan Andrew’s flicked header goes over the bar.

Sennen are then unlucky not to score they goal they deserved when they break left with Jake Barrett who runs into the box to go one on one. He knocks the ball past the keeper at the near post only to see it smack the bottom of the upright, run along the line then be knocked clear by Darren Ball.

Another cross from the right sees a Sennen forward head just over. From the resulting goal kick a through ball reaches Badcock who beats his marker again but knocks the ball wide of the post.

The final action of the game again involves a through ball to Badcock who turns and shoots just over the crossbar.

F-T

Penzance looked a much stronger outfit upfront when Man of the Match Joe Day was on the pitch. The score would have been higher if they didn’t snatch at their shots or waited to get close in. Ryan Holland had a good game putting himself all over the park and the back two central defenders of Darren Ball and James Street got almost everything that came at them.

Sennen were big and strong, quick with the through ball and would have got on the score sheet if not for accuracy when going one on one. Another game or two and they will be quite a force.

21 fouls in the game but they were for clumsyness as the game was played in good spirit.

Thanks to the ref, Grant Portafield, and his assistants for officiating.

Corners – Penzance 6-2 Sennen (2-2 1st half)

This colour means played last season

This colour means players returning home

This colour means new players to me.

There are more players in the squad but were either working or away.
